Russian Cultural Center – Our Texas presents the 11th Annual Russian Documentary Showcase, October 25 – 27, 2017.
This year’s showcase features Vitaly Manskiy’s Under the Sun and Close Relations, as well as two short films by Valery Balayan: Romance of Nadir and Enjoy.
Under the Sun documents a year in the life of a family living in Pyongyang, the capital city of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, giving a real and intimate glimpse into the realities of daily life in contemporary North Korea. Manskiy envisioned the movie as a sort of “time machine” to the Soviet Union under Stalin, meant to bring a better understanding of his country’s history.
Close Relations analyzes the social and familial and fissures that have formed as a result of the Ukraine-Russia conflict in Ukraine through the lens of Manskiy’s own extended family.
Valery Balayan’s two short films, Romance of Nadir and Enjoy depict concise, personal snapshots of life in contemporary Crimea after its annexation into the Russian Federation.
Each movie will be accompanied by a discussion and Q&A session with our honored guests (see below).
