Arts Brookfield presents Out of Many One, a solo exhibition of mosaic artist Chris Silkwood . On view February 12 – May 14, at Total Plaza, 1201 Louisiana Street in downtown Houston.
Houston artist Chris Silkwood has mastered the art of gathering thousands of pieces of broken glass and small stones that are then thoughtfully placed in patterns exuding light. As a mosaic artist, Silkwood’s work reflects the classical in the materials she uses, while her contemporary designs capture the energy of the world around her.
Out of Many One reflects the diversity and multi-faceted personalities of Houston. Curated by Sally Reynolds, the exhibition is part of Brookfield Properties’ commitment to presenting free, world-class cultural experiences in their premier buildings.
About the artist:
Chris Silkwood is a dedicated and enthusiastic mosaic artist. She learned the art of mosaic approximately fourteen years ago while living in Australia. Chris had the opportunity to study with the artists of ArtBusters, a renowned mosaic studio in Brisbane, Australia. After returning to the United States, she also took a summer course at the famed Mosaic Art School in Ravenna, Italy.
Chris has blended her training and creative instincts to develop a style that is uniquely her own. Her work is a study in classic mosaic with very contemporary styling. Her intention has always been to honor the ancient technique but with modern design application. She believes there are no boundaries with mosaic and the opportunity to work with such magnificent color in the glass she uses is incredibly fulfilling. Her art adorns private homes and businesses throughout the U.S. and overseas.
