MYSTIC LYON is thrilled to present “Lee’s Congo Barre” by legendary Fifth Ward painter El Franco Lee II. This exhibition includes newly created personal works about Fifth Ward, Lee’s late father Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee and his grandmother’s business “Lee’s Congo Bar,” which is spelled Barre, like the cough syrup, for the show’s title.
This exhibition will include the paintings on view being updated every few weeks. The artwork will remain on view on the outside of the building from October 19 through February 29, 2020 with a reception on Saturday, October 19 from 6-9pm.
During the run of the show, there will be several Happy Hours with the artist to see the work as it changes and to share related memories. More information about these events can be found on Mystic Lyon’s social media accounts (mysticlyonhtx) and through their email distribution.
This show will run in conjunction with a series of political collages by Bob Lee, late artist and uncle of El Franco Lee II.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
El Franco Lee II represents a generation of new and emerging voices from Houston’s burgeoning arts community. A product of the University of Houston’s studio programs, Lee embodies a rare combination of formalist painter and urban griot. His flat, colorful canvases are frozen moments of pop culture, story excerpts both fictional and real. These themes usually consist of hip-hop subcultures, street ethics, politics, sports, and social issues juxtaposed with a fantasy visual aesthetic. His painterly tales depict critical junctures where life is celebrated or conversely, where the moral and ethical fibers of society begin to tear. Lee’s narratives provide an honest assessment of violence that continues to infuse everyday rap culture and the spectacle that is apparently cultivated through the modern media. The boldness of the colors in his paintings reflects the depicted emotional outbursts.
