Houston Ballet continues its 48th season with the mixed repertory program Rock, Roll & Tutus, March 8 – 18, 2018.

This mixed rep features Stanton Welch’s Play, the Houston Ballet premiere of Tim Harbour’s Filigree and Shadow, and the Houston Ballet premiere of Alexander Ekman’s Tulle.

Stanton Welch’s Play is set to music by DJ/Techno artist Moby from his Grammy-nominated 1999 album of the same title. This hip ballet examines city life on pointe. Dancers dressed in everyday clothing capture the frenetic rhythms and vibes of modern urban life, translating them into classical ballet technique.

This will be Houston Ballet’s second time performing Play as part of its main season. It has been performed at Houston Ballet’s Jubilee of Dance, Miller Outdoor Theater, and the Woodlands. Houston Ballet performed Play on a mixed bill tour in New York at the Joyce Theater in October 2013.

The fast-paced work Filigree and Shadow brings another Australian choreographer, Tim Harbour, into the Houston Ballet family. Created for Australian Ballet, this work is filled with contemporary complexity in what Dance Magazine reviewed as “rooted in psychological territory.”

This will be Houston Ballet’s first time performing Filigree and Shadow and its first work by Tim Harbour.

After his successful company premiere of Cacti last season, Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman returns to Houston Ballet with his unique and humorous twenty-first century homage to ballet, Tulle. This documentary style work about ballet’s history utilizes witty voice-over commentary and three large onstage LED screens to ask, “What is ballet?”

This will be Houston Ballet’s first time performing Tulle.

Houston Ballet’s performances of Play, Filigree and Shadow, and Tulle are sponsored by Riviana Foods, Inc.
