Mini Altar Workshop

October 11 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join us for a hands-on workshop where participants will create their own mini altar to honor a loved one, which will later become part of a larger community altar displayed at MECA’s Día de Muertos Festival on November 2 & 3.
Altars (ofrendas) are central to Día de los Muertos traditions, serving as vibrant tributes that welcome the spirits of the departed back for a joyful reunion with the living. Decorated with flowers, candles, food, and cherished mementos, these altars embody love, memory, and the belief that our ancestors remain present in spirit.
For this workshop, participants are asked to bring a xeroxed photo of the person or group they wish to honor. All other materials will be provided. Together, we will reflect on the meaning of remembrance and contribute to a shared altar that celebrates community, culture, and connection.
This is the second of two free workshops, made possible in part by a Support for Artists and Creative Individuals grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
