DESCRIPTION:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage is the first major museum exhibition devoted to exploring the breadth and complexity of Black identity and experiences in the United States through collage. Works by multiple generations of living artists examine concepts such as cultural hybridity\, gender fluidity\, historical memory\, and notions of beauty and power.\nBy assembling pieces of paper\, fabric\, and repurposed materials\, the artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives within a fragmented society. The artists range from established luminaries to early- and mid-career figures\, including Mark Bradford\, Lauren Halsey\, Rashid Johnson\, Kerry James Marshall\, Wangechi Mutu\, Jamea Richmond-Edwards\, Deborah Roberts\, Tschabalala Self\, Lorna Simpson\, Devan Shimoyama\, and Mickalene Thomas. Multiplicity also features notable artists who are closely identified with the city of Houston\, such as Tay Butler\, Jamal Cyrus\, Rick Lowe\, and Lovie Olivia.\nThis groundbreaking exhibition brings attention to the richness of collage as an art form. Building upon the legacy of African American artists such as Romare Bearden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Faith Ringgold\, and Betye Saar\, contemporary artists make collages in an array of ways\, from traditional cutting and pasting to creating works digitally. Arthur Jafa takes digital collage a step further\, gathering highs and lows of Black experiences into his poignant video montage Love Is the Message\, The Message Is Death.

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston  the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

SUMMARY:Framing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn framing basics using a pre-made frame in this workshop with the Menil Collection’s framer\, Mina Gaber. The workshop is inspired by our current exhibition\, “THIS SIDE UP”\, which explores the behind-the-scenes labor in a museum\, including art handling and installation.\nDiscover how to best highlight your artwork and learn framing tips\, such as selecting the right frame\, glazing\, hinging tape\, and how to hang the work. Mina will also provide one-on-one advice for all your detailed framing questions.\nParticipants are asked to bring one piece of 2D artwork\, photography\, or a memento (maximum size: 11 x 14 inches) to mat and frame during the workshop. You will be provided with one 11 x 14 inch frame and all the necessary supplies.\nThe workshop will take place indoors in HCCC’s community room.\nREGISTRATION\n$75 for HCCC members\n$85 for Non-Members\nRegister online.\nThis class is for adults aged 18+ or children aged 13+ accompanied by a parent or guardian. No experience is necessary. Pre-registration is required and includes instructor\, basic materials\, tools\, and administration fees. Registration closes on April 12\, at 12:00 PM.\nCANCELLATION POLICY\nWorkshops are subject to cancellation or change due to low enrollment. DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls
DESCRIPTION:Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places\, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community that would last for more than 90 years.\nImages of the still-standing small houses of worship\, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall\, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins\, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls\,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective\, 4101 San Jacinto\, Suite 116.\nKathleen Coleman\, a fourth generation Third Ward resident\, curated the exhibition.\nThese small churches resembled rural structures like those in many sharecropping communities near Houston. A few of these small congregations linger and tell the story of the Third Ward’s ever-changing landscape. Because of its proximity to downtown Houston\, the churches are often sold and inhabited by a younger demographic.\nHudnall and Carrington\, who attended Texas Southern University\, have been cataloging the Third Ward area for more than 30 years\, telling a story with their photos of the community block by block\, from past to present. Hudnall’s mentor\, Dr. John Biggers\, saw the shotgun houses as urban pyramids. Carrington’s mentor\, veteran photographer and teacher Herbert Provost\, instilled a love of photography and of the community in him as a student at Jack Yates High School.\nCollins\, a mentee of Carrington and the exhibition coordinator at The Collective\, will continue documenting the area from a new generational perspective.\nThe exhibition\, which continues through May 18\, is part of the FotoFest Biennial and is free to attend. An opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 23\, at 2 p.m. and an artists’ talk Saturday\, April 27\, at 3 p.m.

Having not produced a Shakespeare piece since Henry V in 2015\, nor a Shakespeare comedy since The Merchant of Venice in 2013\, CTC is primed and ready to dive into The Bard once again.\nThe Taming of the Shrew follows the story of Katherine who is being sold off as a wife by her father to the highest bidder. Her boldness and stubborn streak have made her unmarriable by society\, but her sister\, Bianca\, cannot marry until the elder sister has been so. Enter Petruchio\, a cad who is determined to win over Katherine to be his wife. An explosive battle of the sexes ensues in this electrically charged love story that will have audiences crying with laughter.\n“This play is my favorite Shakespeare comedy\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “But it’s got some problematic aspects that don’t really play at face value for a modern audience. The idea of a woman being ‘tamed’ by a man to be married is creepy at best. So\, to address this issue\, our production is going to set the play as a mid-20th-century sitcom. Think Father Knows Best\, The Donna Reed Show\, or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Using the script to explore the values that we once held in our popular culture\, and do still to this day\, in some respects. Our goal is to examine and critique the treatment of women rather than glorify it\, and this lens of pre-feminist situational comedies will help us to do that.”

The exhibition will continue through Saturday\, May 11\, 2024.\nLorena Morales presents new works that belong to the series “Topographies of a Place to Know”\, which she started in 2019 while living as an expat in Soyo\, Angola. To better understand her surroundings and the context of her location\, she searched for detailed city and area maps\, to no avail. As a result of her frustration\, Morales began creating her own maps\, and the series was born. “Topographies of a Place to Know” is a series of imaginary\, emotional\, and psychological maps that relate to the perception of home and the persistence of memory; these concepts are an overarching theme throughout her current work. Morales continues her cogitation over identity and the evolving nature of home as memories\, circumstances\, spaces\, and perceptions change.

DESCRIPTION:When Buddy’s not on the road you can find him in Nashville but he grew up in Park Forest\, Illinois\, a suburb of Chicago. He didn’t have a troubled childhood. His parents were nice to him. They paid for guitar lessons when he was ten and they never said\, “when are you going to get a real job?” He sang Crosby\, Stills and Nash songs with his sisters and answered his little brother’s questions from the top bunk. He spent a few years away at college puzzling over Homer and Plato and then he was back\, living in the big city this time\, and playing open mics at Chicago’s famed Earl of Old town. He once opened for the amazing Steve Goodman there on New Year’s Eve. Buddy was 21. Says he could have walked out of there that night and gotten hit by a bus and he wouldn’t have felt like life cheated him at all. When Buddy made his first trip to Texas from his native Chicago\, Guy Clark heard him singing under a tree at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Guy went back to Nashville\, opened the door and said\, “listen to this kid\, he’s good!” A publishing deal and a U-Haul headed south soon followed. In 1987 he was a New Folk Award Winner at Kerrville and released his first album called “On the Line”. David Wilcox recorded “The Kid” on his first record for A&M. Buddy did some writing with Garth Brooks. Janis Ian asked him if he’d like to write with her. Their song “Amsterdam” got recorded by Joan Baez. Nanci Griffith asked Buddy to sing on a show she was taping for Irish television. DESCRIPTION:The Classical Theatre Company will wrap up its Season of Iconic Women with William Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece\, The Taming of the Shrew. Having not produced a Shakespeare piece since Henry V in 2015\, nor a Shakespeare comedy since The Merchant of Venice in 2013\, CTC is primed and ready to dive into The Bard once again.\nThe Taming of the Shrew follows the story of Katherine who is being sold off as a wife by her father to the highest bidder. Her boldness and stubborn streak have made her unmarriable by society\, but her sister\, Bianca\, cannot marry until the elder sister has been so. Enter Petruchio\, a cad who is determined to win over Katherine to be his wife. An explosive battle of the sexes ensues in this electrically charged love story that will have audiences crying with laughter.\n“This play is my favorite Shakespeare comedy\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “But it’s got some problematic aspects that don’t really play at face value for a modern audience. The idea of a woman being ‘tamed’ by a man to be married is creepy at best. So\, to address this issue\, our production is going to set the play as a mid-20th-century sitcom. Think Father Knows Best\, The Donna Reed Show\, or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Using the script to explore the values that we once held in our popular culture\, and do still to this day\, in some respects. Our goal is to examine and critique the treatment of women rather than glorify it\, and this lens of pre-feminist situational comedies will help us to do that.”

SUMMARY:Stagolee and the Funeral of a Dangerous Word
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere\nBy Thomas Meloncon\nThe play takes place in an office in a small town in East Texas where the local NAACP chapter is planning a funeral for the “N word”. At the same time\, a bigoted white man is on his way to that same office to have a frank discussion with the legendary Stagolee\, a black man known for his swagger. The two men have had a fight at their workplace\, and this “conversation” is actually a court-ordered intervention\, facilitated by a visiting Jewish psychologist. This new play examines different points of view along the racial divide and does so without judgement\, ultimately bringing its characters into a better understanding of each other. A world premiere production of nationally recognized Houston playwright Thomas Meloncon’s newest work.\nThomas Meloncon is an Associate Professor of Theatre in the Visual and Performing Art Dept. in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences at Texas Southern University. He is the author of plays that have been produced nationally and internationally. His poetry publications include Recollections and Poetry in E Minor. His list of plays includes\, Johnnie B. Goode published in Acting Up and Getting Down: An Anthology of African American Playwrights of Texas\, published by University of Texas Press\, The Man Who Saved New Orleans published in Callaloo: A Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters by John Hopkins University Press. His popular stage plays include The Diary of Black Men\, Whatever Happened to Black Love\, If Beds Could talk\, Jump the Broom\, and Where Were You in ’65\, to name a few. Mr. Meloncon is the Narrator on the recent Fade to Black “Thank You\, Ten” documentary film\, celebrating their 10 years of mentoring and producing new African American playwrights from across the U.S. He is the featured poet on several Jazz musical albums\, and his folksong\, “Ain’t Gonna Wait Too Long” can be heard in season 3 episode 6 of the TV series SNOWFALL. His many awards include The TSU IMPACT Award\, TSU COLABS Best Faculty Mentor Award-Theatre\, Induction into the Kashmere High School Alumni Hall of Fame\, two certificates of Congressional Recognition\, A Resolution from The State of Texas\, A Bronze Medallion from the City of Houston\, the Creative Writing Award from the Houston Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalist\, Community Service Award from the Houston Area Women’s Center\, and the Excellence in Community Health Education Award from The Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine.
