SUMMARY:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage
DESCRIPTION:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage is the first major museum exhibition devoted to exploring the breadth and complexity of Black identity and experiences in the United States through collage. Works by multiple generations of living artists examine concepts such as cultural hybridity\, gender fluidity\, historical memory\, and notions of beauty and power.\nBy assembling pieces of paper\, fabric\, and repurposed materials\, the artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives within a fragmented society. The artists range from established luminaries to early- and mid-career figures\, including Mark Bradford\, Lauren Halsey\, Rashid Johnson\, Kerry James Marshall\, Wangechi Mutu\, Jamea Richmond-Edwards\, Deborah Roberts\, Tschabalala Self\, Lorna Simpson\, Devan Shimoyama\, and Mickalene Thomas. Multiplicity also features notable artists who are closely identified with the city of Houston\, such as Tay Butler\, Jamal Cyrus\, Rick Lowe\, and Lovie Olivia.\nThis groundbreaking exhibition brings attention to the richness of collage as an art form. Building upon the legacy of African American artists such as Romare Bearden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Faith Ringgold\, and Betye Saar\, contemporary artists make collages in an array of ways\, from traditional cutting and pasting to creating works digitally. Arthur Jafa takes digital collage a step further\, gathering highs and lows of Black experiences into his poignant video montage Love Is the Message\, The Message Is Death.

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

SUMMARY:(of) Everything Island
DESCRIPTION:Katrina Moorhead’s (of) Everything Island is an assembly of evocative sculptural objects interacting with one another in the main gallery. Building off Moorhead’s sensitivity to materials’ potential for expansive storytelling\, these objects explore places where the veil between the real and the otherworldly is thin and porous. The works reimagine aspects of the natural world\, referencing unearthly entities and apparitions\, flora and fauna\, culled from a disparate array of sources including Victorian evolutionary theory\, video games\, and traditional Irish fairy folklore to create a feminist exploration of grief\, empathy\, and resilience.

SUMMARY:MANUAL (Ed Hill & Suzanne Bloom) | BEECH // BOOK ; An Emblematic Pairing
DESCRIPTION:MANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom)\nBEECH // BOOK ; An Emblematic Pairing\nMarch 9 – April 20\, 2024\nReception for the Artists: Saturday\, March 9\, 3-5 pm\,\nArtist Conversation with Juliette Bianco 4 pm\, Director\, Weatherspoon Art Museum\, Greensboro\, NC\nMoody Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new photographs by MANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom)\, in conjunction with the 2024 FotoFest Biennial. BEECH // BOOK\, An Emblematic Pairing draws on work from their Guggenheim Fellowship\, awarded in 2021. This exhibition marks fifty years of the artists’ collaboration and their nineteenth exhibition with the Gallery. Quoting the artists\, “The crux of the project is the shared etymological roots of the words beech and book. The implications of this dynamic connection have sparked intellectual\, imaginary\, and artistic discovery\, and extends to questions of humans’ relation with our planet. The realities of climate change prompted us to reconsider\, reexamine\, and reinterpret humans and trees as collaborative beings\, with the book\, in many ways\, acting as an informing intermediary.”\nMANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom) began their artistic collaboration in 1974. Considered pioneers of digital photography\, their photographs\, videos\, multimedia projects and installations have been shown widely\, both internationally and throughout the United States. Their work is represented in many permanent private and public collections including major museums in Houston\, where they are notably well established\, New York City\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Denver\, Arizona\, and New Hampshire. A retrospective of their work\, MANUAL: Two Worlds\, The Collaboration of Ed Hill and Suzanne Bloom\, organized by the International Center of Photography and shown there in 2002\, was exhibited in an expanded form at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston in 2004. Their first exhibition at the MFAH\, Suzanne Bloom and Ed Hill (MANUAL): Research and Collaboration\, took place in 1980. FORESTPRODUCTS\, an extensive experimental multimedia installation\, was mounted at the Contemporary Arts Museum\, Houston in 1992. Bloom and Hill are the recipients of numerous grants\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and four National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. MANUAL has been represented by Moody Gallery since 1983.\nMoody Gallery is open Tuesday – Friday 10:30 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. SUMMARY:Critical Geography – FotoFest Biennial 2024
DESCRIPTION:The FotoFest Biennial 2024 central exhibition\, “Critical Geography”\, reexamines traditional Western and historical understandings of geography while expanding these investigations to new realms. Borrowing its name from the subdiscipline of geography that questions and challenges power structures\, inequality\, and the dominant ideologies shaping physical space\, Critical Geography explores how space\, place\, and communities are influenced by social\, economic\, ecological\, and political forces. By critically analyzing these dynamics\, the works in the exhibition provoke conversations around social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and transformative change.\n“Our intent is that the 2024 Biennial\, featuring both existing and newly commissioned works from local and international artists\, will allow viewers to engage in important dialogues around the social dimensions of space and our shared planet\,” says Steven Evans\, Executive Director of FotoFest. “We look forward to once again celebrating Houston’s vibrant art and photo community while embracing these new perspectives around place-making\, the image\, and geography.”\n“Critical Geography” features a diverse range of image-based practices\, representing artists from photographers and storytellers whose works shed light on systemic oppression\, violence\, and urgent environmental concerns to image-makers who appropriate mapping\, social media\, and technology in order to explore inequality in colonial and post-colonial contexts. The exhibition highlights a range of unorthodox strategies employed to construct new narratives around place and community while imagining alternative organizations of social space. The Biennial exhibition includes several site-specific works and new commissions by FotoFest.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls
DESCRIPTION:Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places\, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community that would last for more than 90 years.\nImages of the still-standing small houses of worship\, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall\, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins\, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls\,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective\, 4101 San Jacinto\, Suite 116.\nKathleen Coleman\, a fourth generation Third Ward resident\, curated the exhibition.\nThese small churches resembled rural structures like those in many sharecropping communities near Houston. A few of these small congregations linger and tell the story of the Third Ward’s ever-changing landscape. Because of its proximity to downtown Houston\, the churches are often sold and inhabited by a younger demographic.\nHudnall and Carrington\, who attended Texas Southern University\, have been cataloging the Third Ward area for more than 30 years\, telling a story with their photos of the community block by block\, from past to present. Hudnall’s mentor\, Dr. John Biggers\, saw the shotgun houses as urban pyramids. Carrington’s mentor\, veteran photographer and teacher Herbert Provost\, instilled a love of photography and of the community in him as a student at Jack Yates High School.\nCollins\, a mentee of Carrington and the exhibition coordinator at The Collective\, will continue documenting the area from a new generational perspective.\nThe exhibition\, which continues through May 18\, is part of the FotoFest Biennial and is free to attend. An opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 23\, at 2 p.m. and an artists’ talk Saturday\, April 27\, at 3 p.m.

SUMMARY:Potentia // Actualitas
DESCRIPTION:Potentia // Actualitas is a collaborative\, immersive installation that explores the potential and actualized complexities of natural intelligence through lens-based media\, found objects and ready-mades in a site-specific installation. The lens-based works record iterations of light\, space and water surrounding a central structure created from organic matter\, rusted artifacts\, glass\, and construction materials. Running throughout is a neon line that connects these varying attributes into a systemic relationship. Together\, Cindee Travis Klement and JR Roykovich build a world that investigates the balance of opposing dichotomies and subsequent freedom from dualistic constraints. They advocate for a wild and intuitive response to a possible future of unbound potential.

SUMMARY:The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:The Classical Theatre Company will wrap up its Season of Iconic Women with William Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece\, The Taming of the Shrew. Having not produced a Shakespeare piece since Henry V in 2015\, nor a Shakespeare comedy since The Merchant of Venice in 2013\, CTC is primed and ready to dive into The Bard once again.\nThe Taming of the Shrew follows the story of Katherine who is being sold off as a wife by her father to the highest bidder. Her boldness and stubborn streak have made her unmarriable by society\, but her sister\, Bianca\, cannot marry until the elder sister has been so. Enter Petruchio\, a cad who is determined to win over Katherine to be his wife. An explosive battle of the sexes ensues in this electrically charged love story that will have audiences crying with laughter.\n“This play is my favorite Shakespeare comedy\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “But it’s got some problematic aspects that don’t really play at face value for a modern audience. The idea of a woman being ‘tamed’ by a man to be married is creepy at best. So\, to address this issue\, our production is going to set the play as a mid-20th-century sitcom. Think Father Knows Best\, The Donna Reed Show\, or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Using the script to explore the values that we once held in our popular culture\, and do still to this day\, in some respects. Our goal is to examine and critique the treatment of women rather than glorify it\, and this lens of pre-feminist situational comedies will help us to do that.”

Admission is free and open to the public.\nBAKERZDUZEN: Alter Ego\nAlter Ego is a show created by Justin\, an artist better known as Bakerzduzen\, who has been creating art for the last 11 years. He has always imagined that Bakerzduzen was sort of his secret identity\, and that he is like a super villain with the sole purpose of melting minds with his creations. Each character\, creature\, or ghoul that he brings to life is a different part of himself. A small glimpse into who he is as a human being.\nThe pieces for Alter Ego were created over the last year or so with the inspiration of building a unique world. Justin describes his goal best: “Hopefully it inspires you\, or makes you feel weird. Maybe it’ll even get you to laugh a little\, but most of all I hope you just simply enjoy the experience.”\nAlex Paulus: All I have to do is live until I die\nAll I have to do is live until I die is a show by Memphis-based artist Alex Paulus designed around the idea of scale and proportion. The size of an object can make it seem important or unimportant. And we all measure things according to the size of ourselves. Things that are smaller than us can seem trivial\, while larger objects can feel overwhelming. Yet\, when considering the vastness of the universe\, our planet seems tiny and inconsequential.\nHis current series focuses on small figures within expansive landscapes. By placing tiny people within large areas\, it creates a sense of insignificance. This can be frightening to think about\, but it can also be comforting. Knowing that we are so small\, no matter what we do\, it ultimately doesn’t impact the universe on a grand scale.\nIn All I have to do is live until I die\, Alex asks the viewer to think about how humans fit into this world and how small we actually are compared to the rest of the universe. He is interested in the purpose of human existence\, but it seems like we do a lot of weird things for no reason. Through his work\, he’d like to learn as much as he can with his time here on Earth.\nEvan Pardue: Warnings\nEvan Pardue’s first solo show with Reeves\, Warnings\, will spotlight a series of smaller paintings executed over the past five years. Primarily featuring animals\, the small works are distinct in Pardue’s oeuvre for their ambitious execution and distinct narratives. Known for his large-scale figurative paintings\, these works explore an underrepresented part of his studio practice not seen by Houston audiences.\n“It’s an honor to show at Reeves\,” says Pardue. “After seeing the first Mark Flood show\, I knew I wanted to work with a gallery like Reeves. They take risks\, believe in their artists\, and bring a refreshing perspective to our arts scene.”\nKevin Gilmore: Lonely Family Reunion\nIn Lonely Family Reunion\, local Houston artist Kevin Gilmore embarks on a poignant exploration of the profound solitude experienced by individuals amidst our current bustling world. Each brushstroke delicately unveils the nuanced emotions of those grappling with social awkwardness\, inviting viewers to empathize with their inner struggles. Embracing the rich heritage of Aboriginal art\, he infuses his creations with intricate dots\, symbolizing not only the beauty of indigenous culture but also serving as a powerful metaphor for the interconnectedness of human experiences within the vast canvas of loneliness.\nTyra J: Celestial Origins- A Multiverse of Worlds and Souls\nCelestial Origins\, an exhibition by the multidisciplinary artist and designer\, Tyra J\, invites attendees to step into a multiverse where worlds are in constant continental drift\, rendering permanent shelter unnecessary. Nomadic existence becomes the norm\, prompting a reconsideration of our fundamental understanding of home and belonging. If souls inhabit non-human forms\, how would they describe themselves? The exhibition encourages a departure from traditional labels like ‘artists’ in favor of the more inclusive term ‘storytellers\,’ where core characteristics stand as the only meaningful traits.\nCentral to Celestial Origins is the interactive viewing of sculptures\, each accompanied by messages detailing the unique operations of each world and the captivating journey each soul has undertaken. This approach invites attendees to actively engage with the exhibit\, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate narratives woven into the fabric of each creation.
