DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with UHD’s 50th Anniversary.\nLaren Clayton studied at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Her creativity straddles public art\, graphic design\, and studio fine art. Lauren works out of Stamford\, Connecticut. Trevor Lightsy works out of New York City in a variety of media including illustration\, painting\, and murals. Trevor studied at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta\, Georgia. Lauren is a Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholar and Trevor is a long time Jackie Robinson Foundation volunteer. The Jackie Robinson Foundation was created in 1973 after Jackie Robinson’s death through the efforts of Jackie’s wife\, Rachel Robinson\, to perpetuate the legacy her husband.

Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n​\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.​

DESCRIPTION:Discovery Green invites you on a journey to a bright future this fall at The TUNNEL. Visitors will experience 12-foot-tall structures arranged to form a 100-foot-long tunnel of magical light and sound. Other visitors may serve as “pilots” using an interactive device to manipulate the array and guide your path. Over 150 LED bars are pixel-mapped to create a vortex of light\, pulling visitors through. This interactive art installation was created by the Canadian group BIG ART and the tour producer is Creos.

This exhibition refers to the artist being the source of light\, their personal light and process\, illuminating their work from within\, which\, in turn\, provokes a sense of connection with the viewer.\nA diverse exhibition featuring abstract\, semi abstract and traditional paintings\, photography\, ceramic art\, sculpture from metal and found objects\, paper quilling\, glass art and encaustic works. But a blank canvas or empty page can sometimes create an anxiety that makes it difficult to hear our quiet inner voice. The intention of this workshop is to create a safe space for participants to learn about the origins of art and to honor the native tribes that lived or traveled through this land before us. Participants will explore the origin of some Native American people and Native tribes from Mexico. Participants will create a weaving piece\, Ojo de Dios (origin from Mexico) and Dreamcatchers. Participants will have the opportunity to learn native songs in the closing circle where we will reflect and share our experience on what was learned and how knowing the historical context of art can help participants gain a deeper understanding of the world around a us.

DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. This talk details the Mexican American experience in this community\, including their efforts to combat police brutality\, eradicate poverty\, and secure political liberation. This talk will reveal a heterogeneous experience ripe with conflict and cooperation\, suggesting that Chicanos exercised myriad forms of activism throughout the city. Additionally\, this talk will address the recent attacks on humanities programs and curricula throughout the state.\n2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. | The Power of Collaboration – Latinx Artists Working Together\nArtists-Curator Conversation: Visual Artists Beatriz Bellorin and Carolina Otero\, and Curator Rosa Ana Orlando\nThe focus of this conversation is to explore artistic collaboration through the experiences of Houston-based artists Beatriz Bellorin and Carolina Otero. We will discuss the different forms that collaboration can take\, and how it is part of these artists’ creative processes. We will also talk about what happens when artists come together to exchange ideas\, inspire one another\, and push the boundaries of their respective practices. Through collaborative undertakings\, these visual artists explore new avenues of expression\, ignite fresh ideas\, and investigate themes and concepts that transcend individual perspectives.\n3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. | Latinx Representation in STEM\nModerated by Jennifer Ruiz\nPanelists: Dr. Martin Núñez & Dr. Greg Morrison from the University of Houston\nThis panel discussion explores the importance of Latinx representation in the field of STEM and uplifts stories of Latinx scientists and their contributions.\n4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. | Claiming the Power in Our Numbers\nHarris County Precinct 2 Student 2 Government Civic Leadership Academy Student Panel moderated by Student 2 Government Academy Creator\, Mario Salinas\nStudent 2 Government Teen Leadership Academy is designed to help teens foster a culture of civic leadership and inspire youth to become agents of positive change while making a difference in their communities through volunteerism\, public service\, and active participation in the electoral process.
