SUMMARY:Spirituality\, Sexuality and Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Explore how spirituality\, sexuality\, and our own mortality influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds. What if the solution for transforming our chaotic world lays deep in our bodies and imaginations? Spirituality\, sexuality\, and mortality are three charged themes at the core of both our individual and collective psyches. Religious traditions from east to west\, myths\, stories and rituals from all cultures\, treat these themes as “pearls” strung together in timeless and universal patterns of life embedded in the natural world all around us. Confronting these themes is key to removing the “filters” that block access to a greater consciousness\, thereby allowing us to live and experience life to the fullest. Join us as we explore how these “pearls” influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds through an examination of art – especially the cave paintings of Lascaux – lecture\, and discussion.

SUMMARY:Toc Toc\, une comédie de Laurent Baffie présentée par Et Voilà Théâtre
DESCRIPTION:September 6-7\, 27-28\, 2024\n8:00PM\n\nMECA@TBH-CENTER\n333 S. Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.

SUMMARY:Scenes From Films I'll Never Make
DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

Mayra Monsivais also makes her directorial debut with the Spanish language comedy Café Deluxe by local playwright Doris Ramos who uses satire to examine how smartphones affect human interaction. In Knuckle Games by Erik Florentino\, brother and sister duke it out for their late father’s boxing gloves directed by Main Street’s own Jonathan Minshew-Gonzalez. Houston’s renowned writer and poet\, Jasminne Mendez directs The Garden of Night Blooming Flowers by Samantha Vargas about a couple caught in the middle of a battle between nobility and anarchy.\nThis year TEATRX will once again provide programming for young audiences with “La Vida Es Cortitos” two performances dedicated to showcasing short plays and films for young audiences ages 5 and up!\nLa Vida Es Cortitos\, or Cortitios\, will feature short films made for young audiences alongside 3 new short plays selected from a nationwide search. We begin with Adam Castañeda’s Pilot Dance Project presenting the dance theatre production\, Jarabe\, written by Adriana Domínguez. Jarabe explores a daughter’s memories of her mother through Folklorico dancing. Next\, TEATRX produces two plays for young audiences led by returning directors\, Angeles Romero and Laura Moreno. Romero will direct Silver Linings by Alicia Ana Hernandez-Roulet. Silver Linings demonstrates a mother’s determination to stop the cycle of addiction with love\, honesty\, and sacrifice. Finally\, Moreno directs Alien Menudo by native Houstonian and 3-time festival playwright Alvaro Saar Rios as he imagines a world where Mexican food is out of this world.\nThe festival will showcase a diverse and compelling lineup of short films by independent filmmakers from around the US and Latin America. The lineup will also include short dance films to provide a multidisciplinary experience like never before. Following every performance\, audiences will vote for their favorite short film. At the final performance\, the top films will compete to win a $100 cash prize and the chance to be named “LVEC 2024 Audience Favorite Film!”\nLa Vida Es Cortos/Life Is Shorts Festival is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
