SUMMARY:Nurture Your Energy Body (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Care for the sacred aspects of yourself with these basics from ancient Tibetan spiritual traditions.\nMany wisdom traditions describe the flow of energy within the body\, which is vital for both physical and spiritual well-being. But most of us have never learned about this powerful layer of our experience. In this series\, we’ll learn about Tibetan teachings on the structure of the vajra (or subtle) body\, and some simple but profound meditations to help us tune into the body’s energy and get out of our own way so it can flow more freely. You’ll also receive weekly “homework” assignments for activities that can both recharge your vital energy\, and help you to notice what drains you. By the end of this course\, you’ll know the ancient Tibetan basics of caring for this sacred aspect of yourself.

Often we have to live our way into those answers over a long time – they can’t be found in five easy steps in a YouTube video. And we need people and perspectives different from our own to support us in the process.

SUMMARY:Popcorn Psychology (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Grab some popcorn and discover how film and psychology go together like Mike and Ike!\nIt’s back! Grab some popcorn and discover how film and psychology go together like Mike and Ike. It is no accident that the movies came of age alongside the discipline of psychology. Both examined the human experience in new and innovative ways\, inventing vocabularies and techniques that continue to shape our culture and our very perceptions of ourselves. We will watch portions of four movies in class and explore how psychology can inform our film watching\, and how the art of film can teach us about human nature.

This multigenre workshop will help South Asian writers reclaim their roots and stretch beyond them\, developing authentic voices rather than feeding into an imaginary fetishized South Asian monolithic consciousness. We will do so through generative prompts\, a diverse range of sample texts\, group discussions\, multimodal play\, and collaborative exercises. Hopefully\, in the process\, we will build a community that encourages risks\, makes space for vulnerability\, and offers generous feedback.

In addition to writing\, we’ll read three poetry collections (titles TBD) and discuss them during the course. We’ll talk about finding or identifying our audience(s)\, curating our collections\, publishing\, and presenting our work to the public. Participants will leave this course with several new poems appropriate for their collections\, a better understanding of the poetry collection as a genre\, and how they want their own collection to be organized and presented.\nWriters taking this course should be experienced poets who can commit to weekly reading and writing assignments.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. This project is generously funded by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, and Mid-America Arts Alliance.

How do we build a truly connected\, inclusive community? The most important questions in our lives do not have simple answers. Often we have to live our way into those answers over a long time – they can’t be found in five easy steps in a YouTube video. And we need people and perspectives different from our own to support us in the process.

SUMMARY:Sailing to Byzantium: The Poetics of Aging
DESCRIPTION:How does the psychology and spirituality of the second half of life call us to develop new and sometimes unexpected qualities?\nAging with intention is a creative and courageous act\, a path to wholeness. It becomes an art form\, a poetry\, when we allow for inner beauty and strength to emerge and challenge our inevitable biological limits. Our temperament\, attitudes\, and habits determine much of our experience as the body ages. Being playful\, joyful\, grateful\, loving\, and undeterred are some of the attitudes we can contemplate and foster\, and many thinkers have addressed how the psychology and spirituality of the second half of life calls us to develop these sometimes new and unexpected qualities. In this program\, we will apply some of these lessons\, both scientifically-derived and wisdom-inspired\, to the challenges and opportunities of our pilgrimage into latter life. Join us to explore how the arts and the archetypal can support our collective journeys – laden with new joys\, new burdens\, and\, above all\, opportunities that could not present themselves in the busy-ness of our midlife years.

SUMMARY:Evolving Love: Intentionally Growing Our Capacity to Connect (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Practice awareness and communication strategies that can help us move from passive to active\, committed loving.\nIt is easy to think of love as something that just happens: “I fell in love.” But if we conceptualize love as an energy we can contribute to and grow\, love is not an accident of fate. Join us as we explore awareness and communication strategies that can help us move from passive loving to active\, committed loving. Integrating concepts of Loving Kindness\, compassionate communication\, and perspective-taking\, this workshop will help participants grow a love for others\, whether the current relationship is strained or already flowing well. Through discussion\, brief meditations\, and experiential exercises\, we’ll learn how to expand the capacity to love.

SUMMARY:Friends\, Frenemies\, and Foes: Character-Building in Speculative Fiction
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Tanya Aydelott\nTIME: Saturday\, April 13\, 1:00–4:00 p.m. CDT\nPRICE: Early bird price: $45 for members\, $60 for nonmembers. This generative workshop will look at character construction as an essential function of storytelling. Because story roles can help to define (and refine!) characters\, we will also consider the relationships between protagonists and their friends and foes. Using examples from published fiction\, we’ll consider how successful characters complement\, antagonize\, intersect with\, and/or support each other. Writing exercises will help you craft characters who come alive on the page.\nThis workshop is suitable for all writing levels.

Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Writespace\, 1907 Sabine Street\, #125\, Houston\, TX 77007 (map)\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\nThe South Asian diaspora has a rich and varied literary heritage\, one steeped in formal traditions\, in experimentation that challenges traditions\, in collaboration\, in rigor\, and in playfulness.
