SUMMARY:Popcorn Psychology (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Grab some popcorn and discover how film and psychology go together like Mike and Ike!\nIt’s back! Grab some popcorn and discover how film and psychology go together like Mike and Ike. It is no accident that the movies came of age alongside the discipline of psychology. Both examined the human experience in new and innovative ways\, inventing vocabularies and techniques that continue to shape our culture and our very perceptions of ourselves. We will watch portions of four movies in class and explore how psychology can inform our film watching\, and how the art of film can teach us about human nature.

SUMMARY:South Asian Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Kartika Budhwar\nTIME: Six Tuesdays\, April 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, 30\, May 7\, 6:00–9:00 p.m. CDT\nPRICE: Early bird price: $210 for members\, $240 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Wednesday\, March 27. After Wednesday\, March 27: $240 for members\, $270 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Writespace\, 1907 Sabine Street\, #125\, Houston\, TX 77007 (map)\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\nThe South Asian diaspora has a rich and varied literary heritage\, one steeped in formal traditions\, in experimentation that challenges traditions\, in collaboration\, in rigor\, and in playfulness. This multigenre workshop will help South Asian writers reclaim their roots and stretch beyond them\, developing authentic voices rather than feeding into an imaginary fetishized South Asian monolithic consciousness. We will do so through generative prompts\, a diverse range of sample texts\, group discussions\, multimodal play\, and collaborative exercises. Hopefully\, in the process\, we will build a community that encourages risks\, makes space for vulnerability\, and offers generous feedback.

SUMMARY:The Way of the Wise Elder in Film: Exploring Authentic Elderhood through Cinema (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Explore films that grace us with representations of authentic elderhood\, and teach us the essentials of aging wisely.\nThe most compelling films about wise elderhood serve as journeys into mythic territory — offering daunting trials\, vital awakenings\, necessary sacrifices\, and healing transformations. Movies bring the archetypes to life\, gracing us with unique characters embodying essentials of authentic elderhood: generativity\, integrity\, reflection\, reconciliation\, and the befriending of mystery. Depth psychology\, mythic imagination\, and the language of dreams will guide our expansive consideration of remarkable cinematic elders\, observing and amplifying the values\, attitudes\, and tasks of later life individuation. This seminar will include multimedia lecture\, analysis of multiple film clips\, cross-cultural ways of knowing\, and practice uncovering metaphor and meaning via cinema’s fundamental language of dream.

SUMMARY:Nurture Your Energy Body (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Care for the sacred aspects of yourself with these basics from ancient Tibetan spiritual traditions.\nMany wisdom traditions describe the flow of energy within the body\, which is vital for both physical and spiritual well-being. But most of us have never learned about this powerful layer of our experience. You’ll also receive weekly “homework” assignments for activities that can both recharge your vital energy\, and help you to notice what drains you. By the end of this course\, you’ll know the ancient Tibetan basics of caring for this sacred aspect of yourself.

SUMMARY:What Matters Most: How Can We Accept Morality? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:What might be possible if we understand death as the goal of life?\nWhy are we here? How can we live fulfilled\, meaningful lives? Why do we suffer? How do we build a truly connected\, inclusive community? The most important questions in our lives do not have simple answers. Often we have to live our way into those answers over a long time – they can’t be found in five easy steps in a YouTube video. And we need people and perspectives different from our own to support us in the process.

SUMMARY:What Matters Most: How Can We Be Transformed? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Take a hands-on approach to the tools and techniques that depth psychologists use to access\, restore\, and support our relationship with the natural processes of change.\nWhy are we here? How can we live fulfilled\, meaningful lives? Why do we suffer? How do we build a truly connected\, inclusive community? The most important questions in our lives do not have simple answers. Often we have to live our way into those answers over a long time – they can’t be found in five easy steps in a YouTube video. And we need people and perspectives different from our own to support us in the process.\nWe often hear inner voices telling us to “grow stronger”\, “be smarter”\, “fix yourself”. We don’t always know if the voices we hear are our own\, or if they even have our best interests at heart. But when our worlds are turned upside-down by changes outside of our control – changes that\, perhaps\, can’t be undone – we have to know how to listen for the voice that calls for change. Sometimes\, the only way forward is the way of inner transformation.

Whether you are a practiced poet or a total “newbie” who has just wondered what poetry is “about\,” this workshop will provide a jump-start to get you into a writing practice. Come join us in a supportive\, inspiring workshop environment in which we will explore formal poetry\, free verse\, spoken word\, and experimental poetry from a wide range of contemporary authors. We will also study a broad array of craft techniques\, including how to use line breaks\, stanzas\, and sound to heighten meaning. SUMMARY:Innovations in Italian Art
DESCRIPTION:The Italian Cultural & Community Center is proud to present an all new art history lecture series exploring three of Italy’s most pioneering artists: Giotto\, Caravaggio\, and De Chirico. We are delighted to welcome back instructor Francesca Lanza for Innovations in Italian Art\, this May at the Italian Cultural & Community Center. Three classes\, three incredible artists.\nThe first class will examine Giotto\, one of the first artists to give a new direction to art in Late Medieval Italy. Breaking with the stylized traditions of Byzantine art\, Giotto drew from real life with a more natural style and three-dimensional quality. We will explore some of his most famous works: the Scrovegni Chapel\, the Assisi frescoes\, and a number of panel paintings.\nThe second class will focus on Caravaggio\, one of the most controversial artists in the Italian art world. With his dramatic compositions and liberal employment of the chiaroscuro technique\, Caravaggio influenced generations of artists throughout the continent\, including Peter Paul Rubens\, Rembrandt\, and Bernini.\nThe third and final class will explore the work of Giorgio De Chirico\, one of the biggest names in twentieth-century Italian art. Influenced by the Surrealist movement\, De Chirico founded the Metaphysical Art movement in 1910. He is best known for his enigmatic paintings like The Disquieting Muses. Salvador Dalì and René Magritte were among the many artists to take inspiration from De Chirico.\nFrom the Middle Ages to the twentieth century\, we look forward to exploring the wonderful world of Italian art with you.\nSchedule\nMonday\, May 6\, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.\nMonday\, May 13\, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.\nMonday\, May 20\, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.\nTickets\n$75 ICCC Members | $100 General Admission\nMeet Your Instructor\nFrancesca Lanza was born in Savona\, Italy. She has a master’s degree in History of Arts and Management of Cultural Heritage. In Italy\, she worked as a museum educator and enjoyed teaching art. In 2015\, she moved to Boston\, Massachusetts to follow her husband. There\, she worked at the local museum of fine arts. At the end of 2016\, she moved to Houston\, where she started to teach private and group classes at the ICCC for students of all ages. She loves teaching Italian language and culture and shares her passion for Italian culture and art with students of all ages. Her most recent courses at the Italian Cultural & Community Center include The Meaning behind the Masterpieces and The Wonders of Italian Art: Veneto and Southern Italy.\nCancellation Policy\nTuition is non-refundable\, but we offer tuition credit toward a future group class if you cancel 48 hours in advance of the start of the first class. Tuition credit is valid for six months from the start date of the course. If you cancel less than 48 hours in advance\, your tuition payment will be converted into a tax-deductible donation to the Italian Cultural & Community Center. You may cancel by phone at (713) 524-4222\, ext. 2.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Neoplatonism and Sufism (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Compare two realms of thought that place a strong emphasis on the individual’s inner spiritual journey and the attainment of self-knowledge.\nNeoplatonism is a philosophical system that developed in the 3rd century AD\, which emphasizes the concept of the One – an unseen but ever-present ultimate reality – as the source of all being and the ultimate goal of human experience. Sufism is considered a mystical Islamic belief system that emphasizes the inward search for God and the personal experience of spiritual truth. Both Sufism and Neoplatonism place a strong emphasis on the individual’s inner spiritual journey and the attainment of self-knowledge. Join us for this introduction to these realms of thought\, explore the key philosophical concepts important to both\, and the meaningful differences between these two paths.

We will do so through generative prompts\, a diverse range of sample texts\, group discussions\, multimodal play\, and collaborative exercises. Hopefully\, in the process\, we will build a community that encourages risks\, makes space for vulnerability\, and offers generous feedback.

From the foundation to the frame to the roof\, each structural element is separate yet integral to the whole.\nIn this six-week revision workshop\, award-winning author Patrick Stockwell will lead students in close readings of both published fiction and students’ own work. Through our detailed readings\, we will study stories like architects\, element by element\, to develop a deeper understanding of story design and strengthen each flaw as it is found. Using skills practiced in class\, students will develop systems of revision that will result in consistently better\, more cohesive drafts of their work.\nAttendees should come prepared with a fiction draft they would like to revise.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
