SUMMARY:Carya String Quartet: Prototypes
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven quartets have become a staple of the quartet repertoire since they were written almost 200 years ago. In their sixth season\, the Carya String Quartet explores some of their favorites from Beethoven’s oeuvre while exploring the influences that Beethoven has had throughout the centuries.\nBeethoven’s Quartet in B-flat Major Op. 18 No. 6 lays the harmonic foundation for Caroline Shaw’s modern Blueprint. These works are paired with Emilie Mayer’s String Quartet in G Minor\, which typifies the Romantic string quartet styles which followed Beethoven’s legacy\, while also drawing inspiration from Bach’s chorales.

SUMMARY:Don Giovanni
DESCRIPTION:There will be hell to pay640 girls in Italy\, 231 in Germany\, 100 in France\, 91 in Turkey\, 1\,003 in Spain. As the servant Leporello famously sings in his “Catalogue aria\,” the eponymous fiend in Mozart’s sublime tragicomedy Don Giovanni has already been very busy when he beds the engaged Anna and then kills her father in a duel. Even as he’s pursued by aggrieved parties on all sides\, Don Giovanni sets about seducing the lovely Zerlina—on her wedding day. But the arrogant Spanish antihero everyone loves to hate meets his comeuppance\, and in director Kasper Holten’s brilliant production\, his descent into hell is not literal but mental\, as depicted by Luke Halls’s incredible projections onto Es Devlin’s magically minimalist set. Conducted by acclaimed Mozartian Dame Jane Glover\, the opera’s stellar cast will be headlined by charismatic Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni\, an international superstar\, in the title role\, opposite sensational soprano Andriana Chuchman in her role debut as Donna Anna. The opera’s world-renowned cast will be headlined by bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as Leporello\, tenor Kang Wang in his company debut as Don Ottavio\, and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke as Donna Elvira.

SUMMARY:ROCO Connections: Addio
DESCRIPTION:ROCO says goodbye to the old and in with the (relatively) new in this concert celebrating musical innovation via the string quartet. Lombardini Sirmen’s Quartet\, a work that helped to shape the string quartet genre alongside those of Haydn and Boccherini\, is an incredible example of a rare 18th-century woman who was not only able to live independently as a professional musician\, but who made an important impact on the genre through her work. Verdi’s String Quartet in E minor – his sole chamber work – praised for its tonal beauty\, opens the concert. Richard Danielpour’s work\, Addio\, takes the innovation one step further\, using the quartet as a metaphor for family and exploring concepts of distance\, time\, and saying goodbye.

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music
DESCRIPTION:A family-friendly classicA tale of resistance\, courage\, and joy  The Sound of Music\, whose story begins in the hills of Austria on the eve of the Nazis’ annexation\, resonates as much today as during the musical’s 1959 premiere. Acclaimed director Francesca Zambello incorporates songs from both the theatrical version and its famous cinematic adaptation into her new production\, a vibrant staging of the beloved story of the von Trapp children\, their stern father\, and the novice-turned-governess Maria who changes their lives. The Wortham Theater is the perfect place to experience Rodgers and Hammerstein’s original vision for their timeless musical\, propelled by the full power of the world-class HGO Orchestra and Chorus and a peerless cast including world-famous mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Maria and baritone Alexander Birch Elliott as the Captain. HGO’s Richard Bado takes the podium to conduct this classic family-friendly production.
