DESCRIPTION:Risky(er) Business celebrates Dmitri Shostakovich and Nikolai Roslavets\, Soviet composers whose experiments and ideologies lived on the perilous line between favor and dissent in the 1920’s-’40s: when music represented power\, politics\, and the perspective of the people. When putting pen to paper wasn’t just risky. It was dangerous\, even subversive. Which of them toed the line safely\, and which landed on the wrong side of scrutiny – and survival? Join the Axiom Quartet as we piece together that history through music.\nThe Second String Quartet of Shostakovich is “Music for the Drawer”\, a now-celebrated masterpiece written with feverish frustration in 1944\, giving voice to the Russian people through a transformed folk song. Stashed unpublished – wisely – for years\, its descriptive twists\, turns\, grotesqueness\, and richness spin a heroic and pointed unspoken manifesto. The Fifth String Quartet (1941) of Ukrainian Nikolai Roslavets has never been performed in the United States since its discovery in 2005\, nor has it been recorded. Roslavets\, a chief academic in the community of 1920’s Russian modernists\, came under scrutiny in the 1930’s. DESCRIPTION:Vibrant Voices: Musical Portraits from the Houston Asian American Archive is a unique and innovative concert experience that highlights immigrant experiences and triumphs in Houston. Join three young Houston-based composers — Victor Cui\, Ethan Soledad\, and Tian Qin — as they share vivid musical stories about three Houstonians: wound care doctor and post-war Vietnam refugee Nathalie Roff; writer\, filmmaker\, and former stand-up comic BanBan Cheng; and dancer and choreographer Cookie Joe. The composers researched Houston Asian American Archive’s materials and oral history collections\, which sparked their inspiration to create these compositions.\nJoin Asia Society Texas\, Houston Asian American Archive\, and Musiqa for an evening celebrating Asian American experiences in Houston through music and oral history. Some of the interviewees will be present to deliver comments; a reception will follow the concert. Registration is required for this free event.

A 2023 graduate from Lviv National Music Academy\, Larysa has an MD in Performing Art and has performed in European countries\, Türkiye\, and Middle Eastern countries with chamber ensembles\, groups\, bands\, and show orchestras since 2018. Following the war in Ukraine\, Larysa moved to the U.S. in October 2022 to start a new life and help her family and people as much as possible.\nFollowing the concert\, photo-based artist & visual researcher\, Jake Eshelman will introduce the film. Eshelman is the contributing editor of Ecological Thinking with Plantings Journal and is pursuing an M.A. in Ecology & Spirituality at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.\nGrab your picnic blankets and join us for an evening of reflection on important topics such as human nature\, life\, and American society.
