SUMMARY:Aureate
DESCRIPTION:The Pilot Dance Project is excited to present its latest-evening length work\, Aureate\, on June 22 and 23 at the Deluxe Theater (3303 Lyons Avenue). Aureate is the latest collaboration between Executive and Artistic Director Adam Castan͂eda and Houston-based choreographer\, designer\, and filmmaker Ashley Horn. Their latest project is supported by a City’s Initiative Grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and an Arts Respond Grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.\nAureate – “denoting\, made of\, or having the color of gold.” In their most decadent and lush work to date\, Castan͂eda and Horn delve into the imagination to mine the possibilities of gold matter. With an inclination toward the Feminine Divine and the sanctity of human ritual and ceremony\, both choreographers create dances inspired by nature\, womanhood\, and mythology.\nHorn will work toward stripping away the heavy veil of expectations\, valuations\, and roles of the women in her life\, culture\, and mythos to find an inner feminine light that is at once quiet\, strong\, glittering\, and brilliant. She will attempt to approach herself\, a mother who is entering middle age\, to find the value in lived experience and learned wisdom rather than measured caretaking and appraisal tied to physical beauty.\nCastan͂eda’s new works a recreation of the fable “The Beauty Contest of the Birds\,” in which the jackdaw attempts to adorn herself with the brilliant feathers of the other birds; rather than lead to glory\, her deception ends in ruin.\nThe evening-length work will be accompanied by an original score and live performance by Aurum Son founder and director Sonia Flores. Design elements by Ashley Horn and Edgar Guajardo.

SUMMARY:Four Seasons
DESCRIPTION:Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux\nChoreography: George Balanchine\nMusic: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky\nElapse\nChoreography: Disha Zhang\nMusic: Zeng Xiaogang\nWorld Premiere\nDwight Rhoden\nThe Four Seasons\nChoreography: Stanton Welch AM\nMusic: Antonio Vivaldi\nOur season comes to a close with Four Seasons\, featuring four choreographers\, each with their own distinct style. After a critically-acclaimed debut in 2019\, Disha Zhang’s Elapse returns to the stage for an encore not to be missed. Exploring the idea of aging and the passage of time\, her first piece choreographed for an American company is set to a captivating original score by Zeng Xiaogang. George Balanchine’s Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux is described by New York City Ballet as “an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique.” Welch’s The Four Seasons dramatizes the stages of a woman’s life from the vigor of youth in spring to the introspection of old age in winter. Set to Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved score of the same name\, the large ensemble work returns for the first time since its premiere in 2007. Rounding out the program is a world premiere by Dwight Rhoden\, Founding Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Complexions Contemporary Ballet – his first for Houston Ballet. Rhoden has created works for notable companies such as New York City Ballet\, San Francisco Ballet and The Washington Ballet.\nProduction underwriters: Anne and Albert Chao

DESCRIPTION:ISHIDA Dance Company announces the highly anticipated program “mutability” presented by Asia Society Texas Center June 7-9\, 2024!\nThe program includes two original ISHIDA poetic narratives: “green apples”—which experiments with matriarchal archetypes granting and rescinding power with a cast of four formidable women; and “mutability.” Following a struggling young actor on set in rehearsal\, “mutability” employs magical realism and the form of a meta-play to further the drama and connection to the audience with text from acclaimed Japanese author Haruki Murakami.\nThe program also includes the US premiere of an intimate work by Marco Goecke\, Germany’s most renown and prolific contemporary choreographer over the past two decades. The evening promises to be a unique opportunity to see some of the best and most interesting choreography from Europe and the US.\nFor tickets go to Ishidadance.org
