SUMMARY:The Makioka Sisters (Sasame-yuki)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Kon Ichikawa\n(Japan\, 1983\, 140 min.\, in Japanese with English subtitles\, 35mm)\nSundays\, July 28 & August 4\, 5:00 p.m. (B)\nAdapted from the 1948 literary classic by Junichiro Tanizaki\, The Makioka Sisters follows the lives of four siblings who have taken on their family’s kimono manufacturing business\, in the years leading up to the Pacific War. The two oldest have been married for some time\, but according to tradition\, the rebellious youngest sister cannot wed until the third (conservative and terribly shy) finds a husband. Film scholar James Quandt observed that veteran filmmaker Ichikawa created “an exercise in traditionalism\, intended to affirm Japanese identity at a time when Japan was re-emerging as a major commercial and industrial power”.

SUMMARY:Hundreds of Beavers
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of River Oaks Theatre brings you the Houston premiere of Hundreds of Beavers — the cult comedy hit of the 2023 film festival circuit — for one night only\, with two showtimes! Shot over two years for $150k in the Wisconsin wilderness\, the film by director Mike Cheslik and star Ryland Brickston Cole Tews is a true original of lo-fi surrealism with influences ranging from Chuck Jones and Tex Avery cartoons to Guy Maddin and Legend of Zelda.\nIn this 19th century\, supernatural winter epic\, a drunken applejack salesman must go from zero to hero and become the greatest fur trapper by defeating hundreds of beavers. This madcap\, delirious\, beaver-action must be seen to be believed.\n“Astoundingly inventive and ambitious micro budget film that I’m so glad I got to see on the big screen ahead of its streaming release. One of the funniest films I’ve ever seen. The gags just don’t stop\, nor does the escalation of the carnage against the varying woodland creatures (and our intrepid trapper).” – Freyr\n“Hundreds of Beavers isn’t merely a ‘homage’ to silent cinema and Looney Tunes-style comedy\, but an actual example of it\, with a new gag every few seconds that left me howling with tears of laughter.” – Justin Decloux\nConsider becoming a Cinephile Member for as little as $15 per month! Own the mission\, help keep the art in the arthouse\, and support the River Oaks Theatre for years to come. Cinephile Members get two tickets to our Mobile Movie Palace events per month (or more depending on level)\, plus free merch\, popcorn\, drinks and more.
