SUMMARY:Projectionist's Choice: A Boy And His Dog
DESCRIPTION:Introduced by Kirston Otis\, Lead Audio-Visual Technician\nThe year is 2024. The world is still recovering from a worldwide catastrophe\, watching films outside\, with women’s rights under siege and leaders that are totalitarian weirdos. Oh\, and dogs are telepathic. If this sounds familiar\, you might be Don Johnson from Miami Vice. Or you might be Tiger\, the shaggy dog from The Brady Bunch. And if neither of those applies to you\, then you are actually in the world of A Boy and His Dog\, L.Q. Jones’s influential film from 1975\, brought to you on an original 35mm print from the 1975 theatrical run.

SUMMARY:LOS INGRÁVIDOS
DESCRIPTION:Aurora presents a special screening of short films by Colectivo Los Ingrávidos\, an evolving group of film/video artists based in Tehuacán\, Mexico. Founded in 2012\, this anonymous collective disrupts corporate cultural syntax with radical combinations of traditional mythology\, popular culture\, natural landscapes\, protest documents\, and rhythmic abstraction. Keenly concerned with unjust suppression and violence–especially incidents of femicide in rural Mexico\, the collective’s layered audiovisual poetry is meant to act as communally experienced trance\, opening new modes of perceiving the present. This free screening will take place at The Storyhive\, and will be followed by a casual reception.

SUMMARY:Being There Free Film Screening and Concert
DESCRIPTION:Arthouse HOUSTON aka Friends of River Oaks Theatre and Buffalo Bayou Partnership co-present a FREE outdoor screening of the satirical film Being There. In partnership with Powered by People\, a community-led voter registration effort will also be included at the event.\nDirected by Hal Ashby (Harold and Maude\, The Last Detail)\, Being There stars Peter Sellers in one of his final film roles and\, according to the actor\, his best performance.\nThe program will begin with a solo performance by Ukrainian professional cellist\, Larysa Horichenko-Balema. A 2023 graduate from Lviv National Music Academy\, Larysa has an MD in Performing Art and has performed in European countries\, Türkiye\, and Middle Eastern countries with chamber ensembles\, groups\, bands\, and show orchestras since 2018. Following the war in Ukraine\, Larysa moved to the U.S. in October 2022 to start a new life and help her family and people as much as possible.\nFollowing the concert\, photo-based artist & visual researcher\, Jake Eshelman will introduce the film. Eshelman is the contributing editor of Ecological Thinking with Plantings Journal and is pursuing an M.A. in Ecology & Spirituality at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.\nGrab your picnic blankets and join us for an evening of reflection on important topics such as human nature\, life\, and American society. A limited number of chairs will be available for rental.\nFilm Synopsis: In one of his most refined performances\, Peter Sellers portrays the innocent and childlike Chance\, a gardener whose life takes an unexpected turn when his wealthy guardian passes away. Chance finds himself thrust into the wilds of Washington\, D.C.\, and unexpectedly becomes a celebrity. Guided by a tycoon (Melvyn Douglas\, delivering an Oscar-winning performance)\, Chance’s horticultural musings are mistaken for profound philosophical insights. Meanwhile\, the tycoon’s wife (Shirley MacLaine) sets her sights on Chance as her desired companion. Drawing inspiration from Jerzy Kosinski’s novel\, this satirical film\, both deeply melancholic and hilarious\, marks the culmination of Hal Ashby’s remarkable filmography in the 1970s. It serves as a meticulously crafted exploration of the ideals\, anxieties\, and media-driven delusions that shaped American culture during that transformative decade.

SUMMARY:Close Your Eyes (Cerrar los ojos)
DESCRIPTION:Over three decades after the release of his previous film\, revered Spanish auteur Víctor Erice (The Spirit of the Beehive) returns with a haunting meditation on memory\, absence\, and the enduring resonance of the moving image. An aging Spanish filmmaker is asked to recount his memories of working on his final and still unfinished film. During its production\, the lead actor disappeared without a trace\, leaving in his wake a mystery that would haunt the lives of everyone associated with the film. Decades later\, an investigative TV program revives the case\, and the filmmaker reconnects with the film’s crew\, seeking closure for the actor’s disappearance and its lasting effect on their lives.

SUMMARY:New Releases: With Peter Bradley
DESCRIPTION:Post-film Q&A with filmmaker Alex Rappoport\nFor his debut documentary\, filmmaker Alex Rappoport profiles his neighbor in upstate New York: abstract artist Peter Bradley (b. 1940). When the two met in 2020\, Bradley had neither sold many paintings nor had a major show in more than four decades. The film captures him on the cusp of gaining well-deserved recognition. Of interest to Houstonians: Bradley worked with philanthropist John de Menil to curate The De Luxe Show\, a groundbreaking 1971 exhibition at the De Luxe Theater in the Fifth Ward.\n“(The film) reveals that being an outsider is also the foundation of the artist’s vision and discipline\, reflected in his love of nature and solitude. The serene cinematography and editorial pacing capture all of this with eloquent understatement and warmth.” – Charles Burnett\, filmmaker and MacArthur Fellow\nAlex Rappoport holds a BA from the University of Kansas and an MA from the University of Texas at Austin. He is an award-winning cinematographer\, editor\, and producer specializing in documentary filmmaking.
