DESCRIPTION:Discovery Green invites you on a journey to a bright future this fall at The TUNNEL. Visitors will experience 12-foot-tall structures arranged to form a 100-foot-long tunnel of magical light and sound. Other visitors may serve as “pilots” using an interactive device to manipulate the array and guide your path. Over 150 LED bars are pixel-mapped to create a vortex of light\, pulling visitors through. This interactive art installation was created by the Canadian group BIG ART and the tour producer is Creos.

SUMMARY:Scenes From Films I'll Never Make
DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

The Biennial Collaboration\, which began in 1994\, enables a visual or performance artist to collaborate with a literary artist to produce new work based on a chosen theme. The theme for the 2024 collaboration is “Entangled”.\nFor 30 years and counting\, WiVLA has been a hub of inspiration and learning. SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

SUMMARY:Proposal for a 28th Amendment? Is it Possible to Amend an Unequal System?
DESCRIPTION:Proposal for a 28th Amendment? Is it Possible to Amend an Unequal System? is a participatory installation by artist collaborators Alex Strada and Tali Keren. It critically examines the U.S. Constitution and creates space for intervention and political imagination.\nThe artists ask visitors to engage critically with the U.S. Constitution and pose two questions: What 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution would you propose? And: Do you think it is possible to amend an unequal system?\nThey note that the U.S Constitution\, which opens with the phrase ‘We the People\,’ was written in 1787 by and for wealthy white male property owners\, and that to date\, only 27 amendments have been ratified to change the document. Their questions illuminate this legacy and ask for a collective response interrogating the Constitution’s embedded issues of structural racism\, settler-colonial violence\, heteropatriarchy\, reproductive injustice\, labor inequities\, and non-human animal and climate neglect.\nCentral to the installation are sonic soapbox sculptures that build upon the history of the soapbox as a site of collective struggle\, while also emphasizing listening\, mutuality\, and access. These objects emit an in-progress oral archive of responses to the project’s questions.\nCommunity members are invited to become part of the installation by stepping up onto the soapboxes\, listening to the archival recordings\, and adding their responses\, which will be collected and added to the project’s oral archive to be shared in future iterations of the work.\nThe work was initially commissioned by the Queens Museum and site-specific iterations\, and it was then traveled to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and the Aldrich Contemporary in CT.\nThe installation will open September 27th and will be on view through January 26th\, concluding a week after the January Inauguration in Washington\, D.C. PRH and the artists are interested in expanding the project’s reach so that diverse audiences around Houston can add their voices to the project’s oral archive. Prairie View A&M Univerisity Architecture Department\, content creation lab\, has generously partnered with PRH to build the soap boxes.
