DESCRIPTION:Women in the Visual and Literary Arts (WiVLA) is excited to announce that its 2024 Biennial Collaboration\, one of WiVLA’s hallmark events\, will be hosted at Sabine Street Studios North Gallery from September 12 through November 2. The Biennial Collaboration\, which began in 1994\, enables a visual or performance artist to collaborate with a literary artist to produce new work based on a chosen theme. The theme for the 2024 collaboration is “Entangled”.\nFor 30 years and counting\, WiVLA has been a hub of inspiration and learning. It’s where imaginative women connect\, find diverse opportunities to express their creativity\, and learn from one another in workshops\, monthly meetings\, exhibitions\, and literary readings. SUMMARY:Scenes From Films I'll Never Make
DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Join Fresh Arts and HCCC for a discussion designed for artist-parents and caregivers. Panelists will share their unique perspectives on the intersection of art and caregiving. Engage in conversation\, share your experiences\, and connect with others navigating this shared journey. Attendees are encouraged to contribute their perspectives and resources\, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards faced by creative caregivers. This is a free event with registration\, and childcare will be provided.\nThis event is hosted in conjunction with HCCC’s fall exhibition\, Designing Motherhood\, the first show of its kind to consider the arc of human reproduction through a design lens. Designing Motherhood originated in Philadelphia at the Mütter Museum at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Center for Architecture and Design. HCCC’s iteration of the exhibition is the first mounted in the Southern United States and the first to extend the contents to highlight the craft perspective on the topic. Featuring over 60 craft and design objects and prototypes from the past 50 years and the work of more than 20 contemporary artists\, the show traverses themes ranging from the DIY culture of parenthood and health activism to reproductive access and equity\, parental leave\, and the work-life balance of artist-mothers.\nLearn more about the exhibition and enjoy refreshments at 5:30\, before the panel begins at 6:00 PM.\nThis event is powered by Fresh Arts in collaboration with the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
