In ‘The Introduction’\, Ivo Morrison tells you a story about the memory of summer. But it’s not about his summers. It’s about yours. And how you remember them. And how the memory of them keeps you warm when it’s cold and dark.\nIvo Morrison\, born 1990\, is a self-taught British artist currently based in London. His work is hand drawn with shellac ink on paper. His primary ambition is to tell stories in his pictures; his work is exciting\, silly\, and a bit mysterious.\nHe has exhibited at multiple British galleries\, including with Rebecca Hossack and the British Art Portfolio\, as well as internationally\, most notably at Art Basel Miami Beach\, Art on Paper in New York\, Ink Asia in Hong Kong\, and the International Art Festival of São Paolo\, among others.

SUMMARY:What Is A Ward?
DESCRIPTION:What defines a Ward\, or in a more modern sense of the word\, a neighborhood? Sabine Street Studios is located in Houston’s historic First Ward\, meaning the first developed in Houston. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

DESCRIPTION:It’s going to be another fantastic summer at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts!\nThis summer\, the Pearl has curated a one-of-a-kind exhibition that features toys as contemporary art. “The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” features toys in photography\, sculpture\, mixed media and more.\nThis engaging exhibition explores the theme of play\, with art by FriendsWithYou\, Mitchel Wu\, Herb Williams\, Michelle Brooks and Tim Howell from FOX’s LEGO® Masters\, Madame Alexander dolls\, and many more!\nIncluded in the exhibition is an interactive play zone where visitors can discover their own creativity. The makerspace will have a variety of STEAM activities such as building challenges with LEGO® bricks and MAGNA-TILES®\, art activities inspired by the exhibition\, digital drawing tools\, and a literacy zone.\n“The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” opens Saturday\, June 1 and continues through August 31\, 2024. SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

DESCRIPTION:It’s going to be another fantastic summer at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts!\nThis summer\, the Pearl has curated a one-of-a-kind exhibition that features toys as contemporary art. “The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” features toys in photography\, sculpture\, mixed media and more.\nThis engaging exhibition explores the theme of play\, with art by FriendsWithYou\, Mitchel Wu\, Herb Williams\, Michelle Brooks and Tim Howell from FOX’s LEGO® Masters\, Madame Alexander dolls\, and many more!\nIncluded in the exhibition is an interactive play zone where visitors can discover their own creativity. DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. SUMMARY:"Ken Luce: On Target" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Reeves Art + Design is excited to announce “Ken Luce: On Target.” The exhibition will be on view June 13th\, 2024 through June 29th\, 2024. The opening reception will take place on Thursday\, June 13th\, 2024\, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.\nIn 1984 Ken Luce made his first trip to New York. On that trip he saw many things\, but none more important than “Primitivism in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern” at the Museum of Modern Art. Inspired by this iconic exhibition\, he returned to his studio on the Houston Ship Channel and began making found object sculptures. By 1986\, Luce had built a new studio and started producing a surge of new art\, particularly a body of collage works on 60×40 Arches paper. Starting with two snowmen works\, both titled “Van Gogh on acid\,” the snowman became a recurring theme for Luce and a metaphor in his work for a white man in the late 20th century.\nThese pieces eventually expanded to include the black and tan targets from which the title of the show is derived. Always an outdoorsman\, Luce was at a shooting range in South Houston one day practicing with his .38 snub nose revolver\, shooting what he called full body targets. Having recently been involved in an armed robbery and having a .357 pointed at his face\, he became enamored with them and took 10 home. Once these 9 collages were finished\, Luce put them in a portfolio and stored them under his large worktable for over thirty years. He only recently rediscovered them after a studio visit with Alison De Lima Green\, the Modern Curator at the MFAH. Upon rediscovery\, he felt them to be prescient of current discussions around gun violence.\nAs Eugene Binder described\, “Luce’s work breaks down preconceived barriers with wit and humor\, sometimes subtle\, sometimes not. It’s a strategy that enables him to take his work beyond judgment\, predefined boundaries\, engaging with the viewer\, while sharing the importance of enjoyment he derives in making each object unmistakably his own.”

SUMMARY:ART PERFORMANCES “3PM to Midnight”
DESCRIPTION:Get into the action by attending “3PM to Midnight” at Sabine Street Studios\, which is described as “live figure drawing theater.” Written\, directed and narrated by artist Ray Dunlap\, the short play is designed to engage audience members in sketching the actors\, costumes\, and set design as each of the three characters pause and pose in four separate scenes. Each scene (pose) will last approximately 15 minutes. Chairs and drawing materials will be provided\, but attendees are welcome to bring their own. Attendance is limited to 40 people\, so while admission is free\, registration is requested.\nRay Dunlap is an abstract artist with 30+ years of experience. Born on August 4\, 1972 in Palestine\, Texas\, Dunlap grew up in East Texas\, but also lived in Guam and Japan for 18 years. As an artist\, he has shown in the United States\, Japan and Korea. Dunlap’s style invokes reaction to inspiration and controlled chaos. He likes to take the viewer on an uplifting journey adventure. He shares his stories through his artwork. A former teacher in the GOLDEN Certified Working Artists Program\, he works with acrylic\, clay\, and wood to create art inspired by folklore culture based on his own interpretations.

DESCRIPTION:What defines a Ward\, or in a more modern sense of the word\, a neighborhood? Sabine Street Studios is located in Houston’s historic First Ward\, meaning the first developed in Houston. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

SUMMARY:“The Toy Canvas”: Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts
DESCRIPTION:It’s going to be another fantastic summer at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts!\nThis summer\, the Pearl has curated a one-of-a-kind exhibition that features toys as contemporary art. “The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” features toys in photography\, sculpture\, mixed media and more.\nThis engaging exhibition explores the theme of play\, with art by FriendsWithYou\, Mitchel Wu\, Herb Williams\, Michelle Brooks and Tim Howell from FOX’s LEGO® Masters\, Madame Alexander dolls\, and many more!\nIncluded in the exhibition is an interactive play zone where visitors can discover their own creativity. The makerspace will have a variety of STEAM activities such as building challenges with LEGO® bricks and MAGNA-TILES®\, art activities inspired by the exhibition\, digital drawing tools\, and a literacy zone.\n“The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” opens Saturday\, June 1 and continues through August 31\, 2024. For special Opening Day festivities\, Wild Art Wednesdays\, and more\, visit pearlmfa.org.\nAdmission is free\, but donations are appreciated to help support the work of the museum.\nLocated at 6815 Cypresswood Drive in Spring\, TX\, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege
DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.
