SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

Learn about local butterfly species\, life cycle\, and habitat on this discovery tour of Buffalo Bayou with Nancy Greig\, former director of the Cockrell Butterfly Center. An avid natural historian “jack of all trades”\, she has a particular interest in native plants and insects.\nMeet at Jackson Hill Bridge (on the Allen Parkway side) just east of Flora Restaurant.\nWalking tours are 90 minutes and cover approximately 3 miles. Comfortable clothing and good walking shoes recommended.\nButterfly Walks are part of Summer Species: Butterflies\, a series that celebrates the importance of butterflies to our bayou ecosystem from May – August 2024.

Opening on June 15\, 2024\, The Health Museum will debut the U.S. premiere of MindWorks\, a hands-on\, bodies-on psychology exhibition on loan from the Ontario Science Centre.\nMindWorks brings ideas like decision-making\, memory\, and emotions to life through playful\, interactive exhibits based on cognitive psychology. MindWorks will encourage visitors to step into their own mind and explore how they think\, feel\, and react in a playful and exciting new way.\nResearched\, designed\, and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre\, MindWorks lets visitors explore and learn through a fully immersive experience – from writing a song with building blocks to understanding personality traits. Visitors can try their negotiation skills to play the world’s largest Pac-Man game and engage in critical thinking as they squeeze through unusual shapes and explore consciousness with help from a humanoid robot.

Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. Opening on June 15\, 2024\, The Health Museum will debut the U.S. premiere of MindWorks\, a hands-on\, bodies-on psychology exhibition on loan from the Ontario Science Centre.\nMindWorks brings ideas like decision-making\, memory\, and emotions to life through playful\, interactive exhibits based on cognitive psychology. MindWorks will encourage visitors to step into their own mind and explore how they think\, feel\, and react in a playful and exciting new way.\nResearched\, designed\, and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre\, MindWorks lets visitors explore and learn through a fully immersive experience – from writing a song with building blocks to understanding personality traits. Visitors can try their negotiation skills to play the world’s largest Pac-Man game and engage in critical thinking as they squeeze through unusual shapes and explore consciousness with help from a humanoid robot.

DESCRIPTION:It’s going to be another fantastic summer at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts!\nThis summer\, the Pearl has curated a one-of-a-kind exhibition that features toys as contemporary art. “The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” features toys in photography\, sculpture\, mixed media and more.\nThis engaging exhibition explores the theme of play\, with art by FriendsWithYou\, Mitchel Wu\, Herb Williams\, Michelle Brooks and Tim Howell from FOX’s LEGO® Masters\, Madame Alexander dolls\, and many more!\nIncluded in the exhibition is an interactive play zone where visitors can discover their own creativity. The makerspace will have a variety of STEAM activities such as building challenges with LEGO® bricks and MAGNA-TILES®\, art activities inspired by the exhibition\, digital drawing tools\, and a literacy zone.\n“The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” opens Saturday\, June 1 and continues through August 31\, 2024.
