We’ll talk about finding or identifying our audience(s)\, curating our collections\, publishing\, and presenting our work to the public. Participants will leave this course with several new poems appropriate for their collections\, a better understanding of the poetry collection as a genre\, and how they want their own collection to be organized and presented.\nWriters taking this course should be experienced poets who can commit to weekly reading and writing assignments.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Kartika Budhwar\nTIME: Six Tuesdays\, April 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, 30\, May 7\, 6:00–9:00 p.m. CDT\nPRICE: Early bird price: $210 for members\, $240 for nonmembers. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Writespace\, 1907 Sabine Street\, #125\, Houston\, TX 77007 (map)\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\nThe South Asian diaspora has a rich and varied literary heritage\, one steeped in formal traditions\, in experimentation that challenges traditions\, in collaboration\, in rigor\, and in playfulness. This multigenre workshop will help South Asian writers reclaim their roots and stretch beyond them\, developing authentic voices rather than feeding into an imaginary fetishized South Asian monolithic consciousness. We will do so through generative prompts\, a diverse range of sample texts\, group discussions\, multimodal play\, and collaborative exercises. Hopefully\, in the process\, we will build a community that encourages risks\, makes space for vulnerability\, and offers generous feedback.

SUMMARY:Sailing to Byzantium: The Poetics of Aging
DESCRIPTION:How does the psychology and spirituality of the second half of life call us to develop new and sometimes unexpected qualities?\nAging with intention is a creative and courageous act\, a path to wholeness. It becomes an art form\, a poetry\, when we allow for inner beauty and strength to emerge and challenge our inevitable biological limits. Our temperament\, attitudes\, and habits determine much of our experience as the body ages. Being playful\, joyful\, grateful\, loving\, and undeterred are some of the attitudes we can contemplate and foster\, and many thinkers have addressed how the psychology and spirituality of the second half of life calls us to develop these sometimes new and unexpected qualities. In this program\, we will apply some of these lessons\, both scientifically-derived and wisdom-inspired\, to the challenges and opportunities of our pilgrimage into latter life. Join us to explore how the arts and the archetypal can support our collective journeys – laden with new joys\, new burdens\, and\, above all\, opportunities that could not present themselves in the busy-ness of our midlife years.

SUMMARY:Friends\, Frenemies\, and Foes: Character-Building in Speculative Fiction
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Tanya Aydelott\nTIME: Saturday\, April 13\, 1:00–4:00 p.m. CDT\nPRICE: Early bird price: $45 for members\, $60 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Sunday\, April 7. After Sunday\, April 7: $55 for members\, $70 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Online via Zoom\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\nCharacters can make or break a story — especially in speculative fiction. This generative workshop will look at character construction as an essential function of storytelling. Because story roles can help to define (and refine!) characters\, we will also consider the relationships between protagonists and their friends and foes. Using examples from published fiction\, we’ll consider how successful characters complement\, antagonize\, intersect with\, and/or support each other. Writing exercises will help you craft characters who come alive on the page.\nThis workshop is suitable for all writing levels.

SUMMARY:Inprint Margarett Root Brown Elizabeth Acevedo Reading
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Acevedo will read from her new novel Family Lore\, followed by an on-stage conversation with celebrated Houston author Jasminne Mendez. The evening will conclude with a book sale and signing. The event is presented as part of the 2023/2024 Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series.\nELIZABETH ACEVEDO\, the current Young People’s Poet Laureate\, “is in full command of her special powers as a storyteller of compassionate\, capacious\, and lyrical imagination” (Julia Alvarez). Her New York Times bestselling YA novel-in-verse The Poet X was “an incredibly potent debut” (Jason Reynolds) and won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature\, the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award\, the Michael L. Printz Award\, and the Carnegie Medal. Acevedo is also the author of the picture book Inheritance: A Visual Poem and the YA books Clap When You Land and With the Fire on High\, which explore family\, love\, and Dominican-American culture.\nAcevedo comes to Houston to share her first novel for adults about a lineage of powerful sisters\, Family Lore. About the novel\, Angie Cruz writes\, “Acevedo has written unforgettable characters who breathe new life into how we grieve\, age\, and take care of each other.” According to Kiese Laymon\, “No writer on earth transforms a page into a home with distinct emotional chambers like Acevedo…. This is how stories should be made\,” and Jacqueline Woodson adds\, “With Family Lore\, Elizabeth Acevedo has made the transition into the adult world look easy. The true gift of a stunningly talented writer.” Acevedo lives in Washington D.C. and is a National Poetry Slam Champion.

SUMMARY:Building a Poetry Collection
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Kendra Preston Leonard\, Ph.D.\nTIME: Six Wednesdays\, March 6\, 13\, SKIP March 20\, 27\, April 3\, 10\, 17\, 6:00–9:00 p.m. CST\nPRICE: Early bird price: $210 for members\, $240 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Thursday\, February 29. After Thursday\, February 29: $240 for members\, $270 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Online via Zoom\nLEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced\nCAP: 15\nThe full-length poetry collection ranges from 40-80 pages or more\, and\, while often organized thematically\, can be presented in a multiplicity of ways. In this 6-week course\, we will focus on the elements needed to build a full-length poetry collection—poetry\, of course\, but also intent\, writing mindfully\, editing and revising our own poems\, and workshopping each other’s work. In addition to writing\, we’ll read three poetry collections (titles TBD) and discuss them during the course. This project is generously funded by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, and Mid-America Arts Alliance.

As with a song\, a poem can elevate and capture a specific experience—an image\, memory\, or sensation—and connect people in a powerful way. Whether you are a practiced poet or a total “newbie” who has just wondered what poetry is “about\,” this workshop will provide a jump-start to get you into a writing practice. Come join us in a supportive\, inspiring workshop environment in which we will explore formal poetry\, free verse\, spoken word\, and experimental poetry from a wide range of contemporary authors. We will also study a broad array of craft techniques\, including how to use line breaks\, stanzas\, and sound to heighten meaning. Writers from marginalized communities (writers of color\, writers with disabilities\, writers from the queer and LGBT community) are encouraged to attend.

SUMMARY:South Asian Writers Workshop

The deadline for early bird pricing is Wednesday\, March 27. After Wednesday\, March 27: $240 for members\, $270 for nonmembers. Become a member here.
