SUMMARY:Painting in Late Medieval Siena
DESCRIPTION:In the fourteenth century\, Siena reached what some might call its golden age of art and architecture. In this lecture\, Dr. Judith Steinhoff will contextualize selected masterpieces from Late Medieval Siena\, exploring the political ideals that shaped them and what they can teach us about art and culture in trecento Italy.\nAbout the Presenter\nJudith Steinhoff received her Ph.D. from Princeton University and specializes in 14th century (trecento) Italian art. She taught at the University of Houston for over 30 years and has also taught at Rice University. She has done research on several topics in trecento art: including artists’ working relationships before and after the 1348 Plague\, Sienese 13th and 14th century cityscapes\, and the Patron Saint altarpieces in Siena Cathedral. She has published articles in major art history journals (including The Art Bulletin and Zeitschrift fur Kunstgeschichte) as well as in several theme-based volumes. Her recent research takes an interdisciplinary approach to women’s grieving in trecento painting. She is currently editing and contributing to a volume on Women and Gender in Trecento Art & Architecture: Images\, Ideals\, Realities\, to be published by Brepols Press.\nWhen: Tuesday\, August 13\, 2024 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.\nWhere: Italian Cultural & Community Center\, 1101 Milford Street\, Houston\, TX 77006\nPrice: $10 ICCC Members | $15 General Admission\nPlease note: tickets for this event are nonrefundable.
