SUMMARY:Poetry and Personal Essays: Through the Darkness and into the Light
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Sarah Gajkowski-Hill\nTIME: Saturday\, August 3\, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. CDT\nPRICE: Early bird price: $45 for members\, $60 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Sunday\, July 28. After Sunday\, July 28: $55 for members\, $70 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Writespace\, 1907 Sabine Street\, #125\, Houston\, TX 77007 (map)\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\n“The writer who refuses to explore the darker regions of the heart will never be able to write convincingly about the wonder\, the magic and the joy of love.” –Nick Cave\nIn a sometimes bleak and tragic post-pandemic world\, it is more important than ever to write in order to heal ourselves—of anxieties\, of illness\, of pain. Only by confronting our darkest moments can we come out the other side.\nSarah Gajkowski-Hill will lead a workshop that unabashedly confronts the darkness in our own lives and moves us through suffering\, resulting in beautiful\, honest poetry and prose. We will look at some of history’s most unflinching dark works of literature\, by authors such as Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton\, as well as explore darkly humorous pieces. Together we will read\, write\, share\, and triumph over darkness.\nSarah is the author of The Job Poems\, based on the Biblical Job. She is also anthologized in Connoisseurs of Suffering: Poetry on the Journey to Meaning.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. This project is generously funded by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, and Mid-America Arts Alliance.\nThis project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the state arts agencies of Arkansas\, Kansas\, Missouri\, Nebraska\, Oklahoma\, and Texas.

SUMMARY:Restore Your Writing Joy
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Cindy Childress\nTIME: Two Saturdays\, August 10\, 17\, 1:00–4:00 p.m. CDT\nPRICE: Early bird price: $85 for members\, $100 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Sunday\, August 4. After Sunday\, August 4: $100 for members\, $115 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Writespace\, 1907 Sabine Street\, #125\, Houston\, TX 77007 (map)\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\nHustle culture is all too pervasive today. Under the pressure of that go-go-go\, produce-produce-produce mentality\, our creativity wilts. While the publishing industry has long praised workaholism\, the cost of that pressure is often the loss of the pleasure of writing.\nThe truth is\, this write-write-write mandate runs us into the ground. Passion for a writing project turns into perfectionism\, and suddenly\, writing isn’t a joy anymore. Writer’s block becomes a chronic condition\, and our writing habit swiftly turns into a habit of not writing.\nIf your writing life feels dried out and dried up\, this workshop is for you!\nWe know you need more than just writer’s block hacks and time management tips. We know you need to reconnect with your creative self\, so we filled this in-person experience with activities\, games\, and group activities to restore your joy in writing.\nWe’ll explore the stories around why we are burnt out and spend time noticing what we are doing and how it’s serving us. We’ll explore ways to fill the creative well and keep it full. At the end of this workshop\, we’ll leave with our writing spirit reawakened and with fresh commitments to the joy of expressing our imagination and ideas through writing.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Architecture Walk: Market Square
DESCRIPTION:Market Square\, one of the public squares laid out in the Allen brothers’ original plan of Houston\, was home to the city market and City Hall from 1841 to 1939. During that time\, the square became the center of Houston’s early commercial district. Although the area declined in the mid-20th century\, preservation projects have brought new uses to its historic buildings and new life to Market Square itself.\nOur 90-minute\, docent-guided walking tour explores this fascinating neighborhood\, highlighting buildings such as the 1861 Kennedy Bakery (now La Carafe)\, one of the city’s oldest surviving commercial buildings. The tour route also includes the 300 block of Main Street\, a row of largely intact late 19th century commercial buildings\, and the imposing façades of Houston’s early 20th century financial district. As we walk\, we’ll discuss the methods and value of preservation versus demolition and the importance of projects like Market Square Park\, which was reimagined in 2010 as an inviting urban green space with links to its storied past.\nThis is an exterior architecture tour only. The tour will not go inside any buildings. There are no public restrooms along the tour route.

SUMMARY:Painting in Late Medieval Siena
DESCRIPTION:In the fourteenth century\, Siena reached what some might call its golden age of art and architecture. In this lecture\, Dr. Judith Steinhoff will contextualize selected masterpieces from Late Medieval Siena\, exploring the political ideals that shaped them and what they can teach us about art and culture in trecento Italy.\nAbout the Presenter\nJudith Steinhoff received her Ph.D. from Princeton University and specializes in 14th century (trecento) Italian art. She taught at the University of Houston for over 30 years and has also taught at Rice University. She has done research on several topics in trecento art: including artists’ working relationships before and after the 1348 Plague\, Sienese 13th and 14th century cityscapes\, and the Patron Saint altarpieces in Siena Cathedral. She has published articles in major art history journals (including The Art Bulletin and Zeitschrift fur Kunstgeschichte) as well as in several theme-based volumes. Her recent research takes an interdisciplinary approach to women’s grieving in trecento painting. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Houston's Interesting Founding with Dr. Debbie Harwell
DESCRIPTION:Houston – A Second Choice City\nTexans are a proud lot\, and Houston is no exception. Jesse Jones even remarked in a 1954 letter\, as Houston achieved a population of one million people\, “Looking at the map\, the United States rests of Texas and Texas rests on Houston.”\nBut not everyone has seen it that way. Looking back at some of the city’s significant turning points\, Houston was not the first choice of location. From the city’s founding in 1836 to getting the Houston Ship Channel\, the 1928 Democratic Convention\, and NASA\, Houston was an also-ran\, but its city leaders had the last laugh.\nAbout the Speaker\nDebbie Harwell received her doctorate in U.S. history from the University of Houston where\, since 2009\, she has served as the managing editor/editor of Houston History magazine\, published by the UH Center for Public History. A native Houstonian\, she incorporates personal knowledge with historical research in teaching\, writing for the magazine\, and training the staff.\nSince 2012\, Harwell has taught a Houston history and public history methods classes in the Honors College and History\, learning to research\, conduct oral histories\, and write for a public audience. In addition to her work at Houston History\, Harwell’s book\, Wednesdays in Mississippi: Proper Ladies Working for Radical Change\, Freedom Summer 1964\, won the 2015 Julia Cherry Spruill Prize for the best book in southern women’s history. She currently serves on the Harris County Historical Commission.
