This evening-length presentation highlights five distinct elements\, each featuring a different aspect of Kathak’s rich cultural heritage\, performed by local artists in a contemporary setting.\nThe performance presents five key features:\n1. Kathak (Dance): The evening commences with a dynamic display of Kathak\, a classical Indian dance form renowned for its intricate footwork\, spins\, and expressive storytelling. Kathak is performed by Kalpana Subbarao and Silambam Houston Dance Company dancers\, Neha Shah and Vruti Patel.\n2. The performance highlights the Sitar’s ability to convey emotion and narrative\, complementing the visual and rhythmic elements of the evening.\n4. Harmonium (Organ): The Harmonium by Dr. Jyoti Joshi provides a rich\, harmonic backdrop\, enhancing the overall atmosphere with warm\, resonant tones. The inclusion of the Harmonium underscores the traditional and contemporary fusion of the performance.\n5. Hindustani (Vocal): Traditional Hindustani vocal music by Shyama Mishra anchors the performance with its expressive and melodic qualities. Shyama sings classical compositions that enrich Kathak’s narrative and emotional depth\, creating a harmonious blend of sound and movement.\n5×5 is a celebration of the vibrant cultural tapestry of Kathak and its continued evolution. This performance brings together skilled artists from the Greater Houston Area\, creating a fusion of traditional and contemporary expressions that will captivate and inspire audiences.

SUMMARY:U.S. Army Field Band & Soldiers’ Chorus
DESCRIPTION:The Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performing components.\nFounded in 1946 and 1957 respectively\, these two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions.\nThe 60-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform regularly in some of the most famous concert halls in the world\, and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming\, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic arias to Sousa marches\, jazz classics\, and Broadway musicals.\nThe band and chorus also perform independently\, and have recently shared the stage with such ensembles as the Boston Pops\, the Cincinnati Pops\, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra\, and the National Symphony Orchestra.\nIn addition to their national tours\, formal concerts\, chamber recitals\, and educational outreach\, members of the Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus frequently represent the Army at formal and ceremonial functions\, including the Presidential Inaugural Parade\, presidential funerals\, the Army All-American Bowl\, and diplomatic efforts overseas.\nAll performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre are FREE!

Whether charging on the drum set or playing the hypnotic mbira\, Chad Taylor knows where to find Mr. Lewis at his best.”- New York Times\, Best Jazz of 2018\n“There is a particular charge when tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and drummer Chad Taylor play together. Their 2018 duo release\, Radiant Imprints\, was a master class in Lewis’ impeccable\, breathless form\, rattling off endless melodic lines atop Taylor’s textural rhythms.”- Downbeat\nThis concert is funded in part by the City of Houston Through Houston Arts Alliance

SUMMARY:Mariachi Mestiza y Mala Mujer
DESCRIPTION:Andrea Daniela was born to be on stage; a singer\, violinist\, dancer and actor\, she is a proud Houston native and alumna of MECA\, HSPVA\, and UTD. She has spent half of her life mastering traditional mariachi music accompanying artists such as Yolanda del Rio\, Paquita la del Barrio\, Shaila Durcal\, and Espinoza Paz. In 2018\, she won Las Grandes Voces del Mariachi in Guadalajara\, Jalisco\, and in 2019 she joined the cast of the world’s first mariachi opera with the Houston Grand Opera. She has twice earned second place at the Houston Rodeo’s Mariachi Invitational (2016 & 2022) and in 2022 was played the lead role in American Mariachi with the San Antonio Public Theatre.\nHer debut album\, Mariachi\, Mestiza y Mala Mujer\, showcases a new genre she calls mariachi alternative—fusing the traditional roots of mariachi with unexpected global influences such as pop\, funk\, and hip-hop. This work is a powerful reclamation of voice\, identity\, and artistry from a Mexican-American: the daughter of an immigrant father and a fifth-generation Tejana taking ownership of all aspects of her cultural identity and pushes the boundaries of mariachi to tell the story of a woman who refuses to be put in a box—liberated\, empowered\, and unapologetically herself.\nPlease join us for an excusive pre-release experience. This intimate evening will feature live music of never-before-heard songs\, special guest performances\, and a live Q&A with Andrea Daniela and her producers\, as they walk you through the creative journey of creating this bold sound that. This stipped down live show mirrors the raw\, vulnerable energy of a Tiny Desk performance—personal\, powerful\, and unfiltered and takes you on a journey between tradition and innovation proving that art knows no borders.\nAll proceeds from this event will go directly toward the production of the album’s music videos. A grant from the Houston Arts Alliance helped fund the recording process and this event\, but now AD continues to raise funds to visually bring her vision to life. Your presence and support help make that possible.

SUMMARY:La casa de la abuela
DESCRIPTION:La casa de la abuela is an interdisciplinary performance that reimagines one of the most recognizable cultural spaces in Latino life\, the grandmother’s home\, as a site of memory\, identity\, and belonging. The program blends traditional Hispanic folk music reinterpreted by classical singers (Fernando Grimaldo and Luisana Rivas)\, original scenes inspired by the heightened drama of telenovelas\, and an exhibition of paintings by local artists. These elements converge to create an immersive environment that evokes nostalgia while inviting audiences to reflect on the themes of affection\, grief\, humor\, and faith. This trip down memory lane serves as a reminder for the next generation as well as creates a modern cultural experience that honors tradition\, community\, and connection.\nApril 19th at 6:30PM at Talento Bilingue Houston. Free Admission; $10 Suggested Donation
