While we’re never happy when things go wrong\, we can cultivate the optimism and confidence to make the best out of those situations. Join us to learn mindfulness practices that can lead to the longstanding\, gentle mental discipline required to respond to situations with thoughtful\, constructive\, compassionate\, and skillful actions. In this workshop\, you’ll be guided step-by-step through meditative techniques – some calming\, some challenging – and reflect on how the quality of awareness changes after we focus our attention on practicing mindfulness.

SUMMARY:James: A Book Group (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Uncover the remnants of a forgotten\, hidden time\, and discuss how these remnants linger and influence the present. Can re-imagining the past change how we experience our present? In his latest novel James\, Percival Everett – author\, educator\, and presenter at The Jung Center’s upcoming spring benefit – takes an imaginal step back into the world of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. As Everett walks back around this classic work of American literature\, we journey into a world that Twain’s innocent and optimistic protagonist could not have imagined. While both are runaways\, James – called “Jim” by Huck Finn – flees a life of slavery. Following James’ path\, Everett explores universal human experiences and invites us to reflect on how we’ve lived through or come into contact with these experiences ourselves: How and why do we change the ways we express ourselves to others\, and what happens when we do so because our survival is at stake? How might the deep meaning of a story change if our perspective changes? What happens when we hear a story that fundamentally alters the sense we’ve made of our world?

SUMMARY:The Old Ways Must Go: Tarot for Transformation
DESCRIPTION:How dare we hope for futures we cannot yet imagine? Learn how using old tools in new ways can offer a scaffolding for moving past fear and grief\, and into the possibility of new paradigms. The tarot – or the use of image-heavy cards to illicit intuitions about a hidden present or future reality – began its life as simple playing cards. These simple cards were “hacked” by the practice of divination: their historical and cultural context was completely reimagined\, and they were made to perform in new and unexpected ways. Join us as we “hack” the tarot again\, and find solutions and deep collaboration with shared imagery. Bring your own tarot or other art-centric deck of cards (or simply a set of meaningful images) and join with others in structured play. Discover solutions to problems through honoring what must pass\, and by and weaving together ideas for what’s next.

SUMMARY:Older\, Wiser\, Sexually Smarter (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Have fun as we examine and question assumptions and stereotypes about the sexuality of people in mid and later life.\nJoin us for an in-depth discussion of the idea of “sexual scripts” – ideals we learn in our formative years that not only instruct each of us how to think and feel about sex\, but also condition how we act and identify as sexual beings. Many life changes – the loss of a partner through death or divorce\, the experience of a major illness\, encountering different attitudes towards sexuality held by our children (or even grandchildren) – can call us to identify\, challenge\, and transform these sexual scripts. Through reflecting on our own narratives\, encountering perspectives on sexuality throughout the ages\, questioning what is meant by “good sex\,” and exploring the sorts of sexual decisions contemplated by those over 50\, we’ll have fun as we examine and question assumptions and stereotypes about the sexuality of people in mid and later life.

SUMMARY:What We Can Still Learn from Depth Psychology (Online)
DESCRIPTION:How can we outgrow and live more richly in the presence of life’s problems?\nJung\, Freud\, and others left us with a rich tradition of depth psychology. What is depth psychology\, and how does it differ from other modalities? What are the chief insights into the human condition from which we may still profit? How can we grow from engaging our loneliness? What is the place of the Shadow in the conduct of a thoughtful life? What are the tools which our psyche provides us for self-governance? This combination of presentation and workshop will explore ideas and aspects of analytic psychology that deepen our journeys and provide us practical tools for a larger spiritual life. While we cannot always solve the problems of life\, we may find that we can outgrow them and live more richly in the presence of them.

SUMMARY:Happiness: Find What You Love and Let It Kill You (Online)
DESCRIPTION:What if “happiness” is found most often in the places which demand sacrifice and surrender?\nWe are urged to be happy. But what is happiness? Does it ever fall under our control\, or are we at the mercy of the unknown forces within and without us? Join Dr. James Hollis for an exploration of our expectations regarding happiness and the role that not being happy plays in our experiencing happiness. What does it mean when we are not “happy”? Have we failed at something? What is the balance between happiness and suffering? What if “meaning” is often found in the areas least happy for us? What if “happiness” is found most often in the places which demand sacrifice and surrender? Together we will explore the popular expectation that we are supposed to be happy\, and reframe the conversation in terms of meaning – happiness is transient and contextual\, while meaning abides and makes all things worthwhile.\nJames Hollis\, PhD\, is a Zurich trained Jungian analyst with a practice in Washington\, D.C. He is the author of eighteen books translated into twenty languages\, the latest titled The Broken Mirror: Refracted Visions of Ourselves.
