SUMMARY:Intimate confession is a project
DESCRIPTION:Intimate confession is a project is a group exhibition that considers transmission\, intergenerational life\, and cultural inheritance through the prism of intimacy and infrastructure. Through the work of eleven artists spanning generations and geographies\, the exhibition thinks through infrastructure as an intimate holding cell\, capable of affective and affirmative power.\nThe title is borrowed from a sonnet line by poet Juliana Spahr\, and is recast to reflect on the relational infrastructures of cultural material. In recent years\, a surge of scholarship on the built and unbuilt environments has emerged contrasting “humans\, things\, words\, and non-humans into patterned conjunctures\,” to quote feminist theorist Michelle Murphy. This exhibition examines how infrastructures can be understood as “affective” in their varied expressions of movement and imprint on cultural life.\nThe exhibition includes commissions and site-specific projects that expand on material and immaterial histories of Houston. At times they refer to the unique context of the Blaffer\, connecting art to other fields of knowledge and experience.\nIntimate confession is a project is accompanied by a rich public program featuring talks\, readings\, concerts\, and performances in connection with a range of citywide and institutional partners across the exhibition’s six-month run\, including Basket Books & Art\, the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation Collection\, Institute for Global Engagement\, Institute for Research on Women\, Gender & Sexuality\, Project Row Houses\, and UH School of Art.\nThe Intimate confession is a project exhibition and programs are organized by guest curator Jennifer Teets

SUMMARY:Anthony Almendárez\, Hello\, My Name Is _____
DESCRIPTION:Almendárez’s multi-channel video and sound installation draws upon survey questions related to employment and labor policies in the United States. As part of the project\, the parallels and contradictions between predominantly accepted notions of work vs. artistic labor are further explored through a live\, interpretive performance by sound and video artists on March 8th.\nAlmendárez’s work explores modes of storytelling that confront audiences with the nuanced\, layered\, and complex realities of how we construct identity. He often employs strategies that challenge the hierarchy between audio and visual stimuli\, opening new pathways to interpret and internalize our surroundings.\nHello\, My Name Is ____ is a unique video and sound installation that creates a platform for dialogue around how different forms of labor are valued\, or undervalued\, including the work of artists. This theme will be further explored in a panel discussion and the performance work\, Laura Gutierrez: In Tarps I Trust\, in February 2024.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:Houston: Con Salsa!
DESCRIPTION:“Houston: Con Salsa!” features the rich history of the development of Salsa in Houston that spans over 50 years! With interviews\, anecdotes and life changing experiences shared by pioneering figures that help launch\, build and establish what we know today as the Houston Salsa Scene; the film explores the humble beginnings and the transformative role Salsa played in helping to diversify the Houston Latin population and the impact it continues to have in several areas in the country ‘Most Diverse’ city. Musicians\, dancers\, instructors\, civic and media personalities and others\, share their experiences on the effect this genre has had in their lives and in the Houston community. An amazing feature of the film is interviews with Houston’s first salsa musical group director and with the first established salsa dance studio founder. Filmmaker Devonte Hill captures the universal language of salsa as we learn how rhythms and movement brought people from all over the world together – in Houston!

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center
