SUMMARY:Building a Mystery: The Impact of Cultural Humility on Spiritual Practice (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:A ‘Religion\, Mental Health\, and the Search for Meaning’ Conference. Explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in the wisdom traditions of cultures other than our own. How can we honor the profundity and pragmatic usefulness of these spiritual worldviews without succumbing to the western world’s deeply-embedded tendencies to intellectual colonization and cultural appropriation? How can we remain curious and reflective about the ways we treat the earth\, and not use these powerful spiritual ecologies as a way of bypassing our responsibility to the lands we inhabit? Join us for this all-day conference as we explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in these wisdom traditions.

SUMMARY:Spirituality\, Sexuality and Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Explore how spirituality\, sexuality\, and our own mortality influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds. What if the solution for transforming our chaotic world lays deep in our bodies and imaginations? Spirituality\, sexuality\, and mortality are three charged themes at the core of both our individual and collective psyches. Religious traditions from east to west\, myths\, stories and rituals from all cultures\, treat these themes as “pearls” strung together in timeless and universal patterns of life embedded in the natural world all around us. Confronting these themes is key to removing the “filters” that block access to a greater consciousness\, thereby allowing us to live and experience life to the fullest. Join us as we explore how these “pearls” influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds through an examination of art – especially the cave paintings of Lascaux – lecture\, and discussion.

SUMMARY:Orpheus and Gelert: A Dual Analysis of Unspeakable Loss and the Search for Meaning and Hope
DESCRIPTION:Explore how experiences of loss can teach us how to navigate the underworld – where we can find life again if we can bear the risk of getting lost ourselves. Myths and legends that talk about loss illustrate how the promise of new life is always present\, but only if we are willing to consciously enter the underworld – to willingly explore the sometimes dangerous depths of our grief. In this seminar\, we will analyze how the Greek myth of Orpheus and the Welsh tale of Llywelyn the Great’s faithful hound\, Gelert\, both address the unspeakable pain that follows experiences of loss and teach us ways of navigating the underworld – where we can find life again if we can bear the risk of getting lost ourselves. A short active imagination exercise will help us uncover the images of loss and rebirth that we are currently living.

SUMMARY:What We Can Still Learn from Depth Psychology (Online)
DESCRIPTION:How can we outgrow and live more richly in the presence of life’s problems?\nJung\, Freud\, and others left us with a rich tradition of depth psychology. What is depth psychology\, and how does it differ from other modalities? What are the chief insights into the human condition from which we may still profit? How can we grow from engaging our loneliness? What is the place of the Shadow in the conduct of a thoughtful life? What are the tools which our psyche provides us for self-governance? This combination of presentation and workshop will explore ideas and aspects of analytic psychology that deepen our journeys and provide us practical tools for a larger spiritual life. While we cannot always solve the problems of life\, we may find that we can outgrow them and live more richly in the presence of them.

SUMMARY:Happiness: Find What You Love and Let It Kill You (Online)
DESCRIPTION:What if “happiness” is found most often in the places which demand sacrifice and surrender?\nWe are urged to be happy. But what is happiness? Does it ever fall under our control\, or are we at the mercy of the unknown forces within and without us? Join Dr. James Hollis for an exploration of our expectations regarding happiness and the role that not being happy plays in our experiencing happiness. What does it mean when we are not “happy”? Have we failed at something? What is the balance between happiness and suffering? What if “meaning” is often found in the areas least happy for us? What if “happiness” is found most often in the places which demand sacrifice and surrender? Together we will explore the popular expectation that we are supposed to be happy\, and reframe the conversation in terms of meaning – happiness is transient and contextual\, while meaning abides and makes all things worthwhile.\nJames Hollis\, PhD\, is a Zurich trained Jungian analyst with a practice in Washington\, D.C. He is the author of eighteen books translated into twenty languages\, the latest titled The Broken Mirror: Refracted Visions of Ourselves.

DESCRIPTION:What might be possible if we understand death as the goal of life?\nWhy are we here? How can we live fulfilled\, meaningful lives? Why do we suffer? How do we build a truly connected\, inclusive community? The most important questions in our lives do not have simple answers. Often we have to live our way into those answers over a long time – they can’t be found in five easy steps in a YouTube video. And we need people and perspectives different from our own to support us in the process.

SUMMARY:Evolving Love: Intentionally Growing Our Capacity to Connect (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Practice awareness and communication strategies that can help us move from passive to active\, committed loving.\nIt is easy to think of love as something that just happens: “I fell in love.” But if we conceptualize love as an energy we can contribute to and grow\, love is not an accident of fate. Join us as we explore awareness and communication strategies that can help us move from passive loving to active\, committed loving. Integrating concepts of Loving Kindness\, compassionate communication\, and perspective-taking\, this workshop will help participants grow a love for others\, whether the current relationship is strained or already flowing well. Through discussion\, brief meditations\, and experiential exercises\, we’ll learn how to expand the capacity to love.

SUMMARY:Building a Mystery: The Impact of Cultural Humility on Spiritual Practice (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in the wisdom traditions of cultures other than our own.\nThe ancient\, living religious traditions of Tibet and indigenous America understand humanity as inextricably interconnected with its environment. Many psychologically- and spiritually-minded individuals find themselves incorporating the environmental wisdom of these traditions into their personal spiritual practices. Less well-understood than their inherent care for the environment are the cultural and societal contexts in which these traditions formed and grew\, and the largely-unspoken ways that these contexts – not often thought of as spiritual – fundamentally inform the practices of those spiritual traditions. If we take up these practices without considering their cultural and societal background\, we run the very real risk of misunderstanding the imaginal or mythical worldviews at the hearts of these traditions\, inadvertently and inappropriately adopting culture-bound behaviors that do not accurately reflect our own deep and complicated histories\, and allowing ourselves to remain blind to our own unconscious attachments to ideals that deepen the environmental crisis.\nHow can we honor the profundity and pragmatic usefulness of these spiritual worldviews without succumbing to the western world’s deeply-embedded tendencies to intellectual colonization and cultural appropriation? How can we remain curious and reflective about the ways we treat the earth\, and not use these powerful spiritual ecologies as a way of bypassing our responsibility to the lands we inhabit? Join us for this all-day conference as we explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in these wisdom traditions.
