In the featured paintings\, McMahon creates visual white noise with gestures such as cross-hatching and pointillism. These artworks carefully attend to color and scale\, bordering trompe-l’œil. In the words of McMahon\, this exhibition reflects “the ever-increasing role of technology in present-day life\, and seeks to remind the viewer of one’s own humanity amidst it all.”

DESCRIPTION:Li(sa E.) Harris (aka “Li”) opens This is the Day in John M. O’Quinn Gallery\, on Thursday\, February 15 from 5 – 7 PM. This exhibition will culminate on Monday\, April 8 from 12:30 – 3:01 PM with Li’s performance Onshore Trilling: What to Do When the Earth Sings the Bruise in Lawndale’s outdoor space at 4900 Main Street. Taking place during the total solar eclipse over Texas\, this performance will tap into the cosmic cycles of the earth and sky.\nLi’s practice focuses on the energetic relationships between body\, land\, spirit\, and place. She uses voice\, theremin\, electronics\, movement\, improvisation\, meditation\, and new media to explore healing in performance and everyday living. Often\, her projects unfold over time in acts. For This is the Day\, Li will assemble photography\, analog technology\, video\, and resonant sounds that reflect a survey of her past artistic practice\, especially her work Onshore Trilling and Please Have a Seat.\nLi’s performance Onshore Trilling simultaneously references Houston’s offshore drilling industry—key to its economy as a world capital for oil and gas—and the history of the Blues in the Deep South\, which\, as Harris shares\, were invented by “enslaved persons\, previously enslaved persons\, and their descendants\, like me.”\n“Trilling” is a musical term describing the fast oscillation between two pitches; it is vibration and energy. This is The Day. includes relics and electronics from Li’s family\, fused together to fill the gallery space with frequencies that erode in relation to the respective battery life of each object. Overhead\, perforated sails mimic the sky\, reminding us of ever-present cosmic constellations which orient our earth and dream spaces.\nFor visitors’ navigation\, the center of the gallery includes something that could be—a boom\, a cannon\, a telescope peering northward\, bringing 4900 Main Street (where the eclipse performance will take place) into focus.

SUMMARY:Timothy McCoy: Beyond My Lens
DESCRIPTION:These photographs are meditations on the constant and inevitable change in nature. The flow of water is one object\nof this contemplation. The flow of water and the human journey have parallels. According to Eastern philosophy\, mankind’s resistance to transformation leads to suffering.\nSelected photographs from three bodies of Timothy’s work emphasize “alternative” photographic processes: Tongues Turned to Stone (photogravure on gamphi-shi paper)\, Sanctuary (palladium on translucent vellum)\, and Long\, Long Journey to the Sea (gold-toned albumen). He chose these historical printing processes to evoke the timelessness of his content and his interpretive rather than documentary intent. In comparison\, a fourth body of work\, Watercourse Way (large digital prints on metallic paper) is a contemporary alternative to the hand-made nature of historical processes.

DESCRIPTION:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage is the first major museum exhibition devoted to exploring the breadth and complexity of Black identity and experiences in the United States through collage. Works by multiple generations of living artists examine concepts such as cultural hybridity\, gender fluidity\, historical memory\, and notions of beauty and power.\nBy assembling pieces of paper\, fabric\, and repurposed materials\, the artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives within a fragmented society. The artists range from established luminaries to early- and mid-career figures\, including Mark Bradford\, Lauren Halsey\, Rashid Johnson\, Kerry James Marshall\, Wangechi Mutu\, Jamea Richmond-Edwards\, Deborah Roberts\, Tschabalala Self\, Lorna Simpson\, Devan Shimoyama\, and Mickalene Thomas. Multiplicity also features notable artists who are closely identified with the city of Houston\, such as Tay Butler\, Jamal Cyrus\, Rick Lowe\, and Lovie Olivia.\nThis groundbreaking exhibition brings attention to the richness of collage as an art form. Building upon the legacy of African American artists such as Romare Bearden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Faith Ringgold\, and Betye Saar\, contemporary artists make collages in an array of ways\, from traditional cutting and pasting to creating works digitally. Arthur Jafa takes digital collage a step further\, gathering highs and lows of Black experiences into his poignant video montage Love Is the Message\, The Message Is Death.

DESCRIPTION:Nathaniel Donnett\nDark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\nSolo Exhibition\n“For them\, as for me\, imagining is not merely looking or looking at; nor is it\ntaking oneself intact into the other. It is\, for the purposes of the work\, becoming.”\nToni Morrison\nThe University Museum is pleased to present Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\, Nathaniel Donnett’s solo exhibition at Texas Southern University. The artist’s multimedia works consider how people navigate space and time through nonlinear trajectories and ask how abstraction reflects our realities while offering multiple ways to perceive them. Donnett examines the role imagination plays in contending with obstacles in our lives that manifest as systemic limitations and constitute nuanced moments of discovery.\nThe exhibition takes inspiration from the life of Ed Dwight\, an ex-Navy pilot who almost became the first Black astronaut to enter outer space but was denied because of sociopolitical interference and racial hostility. He later reimagined himself and became a sculptor. Following that path\, Donnett’s works—textiles\, sculpture\, installation\, sound\, video\, and\, importantly\, community engagement in the form of a backpack exchange with students from historic Black neighborhoods in Houston (Third Ward\, Sunnyside\, Acres Homes\, Fifth Ward)—combine the unknown and the embodied to search out Black cosmologies and material constellations that act as poetics\, prompts\, processes\, and presentations for lived transformation.\nDonnett approaches his practice through the lens of Dark Imaginarence\, a concept of art\, everyday aesthetic theory\, and notion(s) of Blackness. The exhibition also reflects on theories concerned with fugitivity\, spatial understanding\, and becoming: Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space\, which describes the house as a shelter and universe allowing for dreaming and protection; Fred Moten’s notion of enclosure\, a psychological entrapment caused by social precarity; and Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias\, an engagement with the plurality of space and time.\nFor example\, the centerpiece of the exhibition\, Staring at infinity through the corners of asymmetry (2023)\, uses reclaimed materials to recreate a geometric form shotgun house that references histories embedded within architecture\, and expansive galactic dreams.\nDonnett’s process is as much philosophical as it is musical—and concerned with how everyday actions and common materials hold memories and serve as witnesses to\nlived experiences. His recent works investigate tensions between the rational and the irrational as a route for accessing generative ways of moving\, thinking\, and living hidden within our subconscious that might help us reframe and redefine ourselves—and negotiate life’s constraints. Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence asks: What could happen if we changed our questions from “What is the sum of two plus two?” to “What is the sum of two plus a spaceship\, divided by Earth\, Wind & Fire’s song’ Devotion\,’ multiplied by the first half of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solaris?”\nThis project is supported by the Guggenheim Foundation\, Houston Arts Alliance\, and the University Museum at Texas Southern University.\nNathaniel Donnett was born in Houston\, Texas. Donnett received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Texas Southern University\, and his MFA from Yale University School of Art. The layered stories\, intertwined across mediums\, celebrate the power of people and the significance of place. Pasadena-based photographer Joe Robles IV worked with the curators\, Susan Rogers and Mario Lopez\, to develop life size portraits of community leaders\, standing firm in place. The portraits are a celebration of strength and resilience—of what it means to stand up to power\, to stand for rights\, to fight for change\, and embrace a different future.\nDialogue and conversations\, listening and sharing\, are critical components of the exhibit\, disrupting who makes and sits at the table\, and organized through a series of public events that privilege\, respect\, and promote community voice over those of experts. This dialogue is intended to explore intersectionality as it relates to people\, the places they call home\, and the power to imagine and achieve a new system with new values.

DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston  the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

DESCRIPTION:Timothy McCoy creates images in order to transform the “reality” seen through the camera lens into an expression of the oneness and wonder found in Taoist/Buddhist philosophy. These photographs are meditations on the constant and inevitable change in nature. The flow of water is one object of this contemplation. The flow of water and the human journey have parallels. According to Eastern philosophy\, mankind’s resistance to transformation leads to suffering.\nSelected photographs from three bodies of his work emphasize “alternative” photographic processes  Tongues Turned to Stone (photogravure on gamphi-shi paper)\, Sanctuary (palladium on translucent vellum)\, and Long\, Long Journey to the Sea (gold-toned albumen). He chose these historical printing processes to evoke the timelessness of his content and his interpretive rather than documentary intent.

DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Presented in coordination with Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s (CAMH) 75th anniversary\, Six Scenes From Our Future features the work of six artists who were invited to respond to the institution’s inaugural exhibition\, This Is Contemporary Art (1948). This first show proposed a radical approach to the presentation of art. Offering unexpected pairings—like a Jacob Lawrence painting alongside a cheese slicer\, or an Alexander Calder mobile in dialogue with Eames screens and a Sunbeam coffeemaker—the exhibition merged museological and domestic contexts while also challenging entrenched hierarchies between the fine arts and design. This Is Contemporary Art set the stage for CAMH as a site of experimentation and play\, while announcing the Museum as a forward-thinking space centered around a belief in the transformational power of art and artists. So\, too\, did the inaugural exhibition position artists as uniquely capable of addressing and reflecting upon a constantly changing world\, asserting art and life as inseparable.\nSix Scenes From Our Future continues CAMH’s longstanding commitment to centering the visions and voices of artists. Working across sculpture\, photography\, video\, and painting\, the six selected artists will mine CAMH’s history to create new work or reframe extant work\, highlighting the institution’s ongoing commitment to commissioning artwork. To support their innovative works\, artists were paired with research fellows who will assist their navigation of the historic archives at the African American History Research Center at the Gregory School in Freedmen’s Town containing ephemera\, images and information resources. This demonstration of collaborative efforts through innovative practice and historical research aims to inspire current and future generations for a new way to share Black histories in Houston\, Texas.\nTHIS WAY: A Houston Group Show showcases new work from Imhotep Blot by way of Amaechina Blot and Studio KER led by Michael Bennett; Colby Deal\, Nahtan (Nate Edwards)\, Dom Elam\, Amarie Gipson\, Priscilla T. Graham\, Gem Hale\, Charonda Johnson\, Berlin\, Jaylen Pigford\, Irene Antonia Diane Reece\, and Jason Woods (Flash Gordon Parks). DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of Cuban conceptual artist Reynier Leyva Novo. Former Present Today presents a newly realized installation and painting series to simultaneously reveal and conceal monuments\, structures\, and figureheads which manifest revolution and tyranny. The works are created through research on icons and memorialization and how the prestige of nation established through revolution utilizes both facts and myths as a means of propaganda.
