SUMMARY:Intimate confession is a project
DESCRIPTION:Intimate confession is a project is a group exhibition that considers transmission\, intergenerational life\, and cultural inheritance through the prism of intimacy and infrastructure. Through the work of eleven artists spanning generations and geographies\, the exhibition thinks through infrastructure as an intimate holding cell\, capable of affective and affirmative power.\nThe title is borrowed from a sonnet line by poet Juliana Spahr\, and is recast to reflect on the relational infrastructures of cultural material. In recent years\, a surge of scholarship on the built and unbuilt environments has emerged contrasting “humans\, things\, words\, and non-humans into patterned conjunctures\,” to quote feminist theorist Michelle Murphy. This exhibition examines how infrastructures can be understood as “affective” in their varied expressions of movement and imprint on cultural life.\nThe exhibition includes commissions and site-specific projects that expand on material and immaterial histories of Houston. At times they refer to the unique context of the Blaffer\, connecting art to other fields of knowledge and experience.\nIntimate confession is a project is accompanied by a rich public program featuring talks\, readings\, concerts\, and performances in connection with a range of citywide and institutional partners across the exhibition’s six-month run\, including Basket Books & Art\, the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation Collection\, Institute for Global Engagement\, Institute for Research on Women\, Gender & Sexuality\, Project Row Houses\, and UH School of Art.\nThe Intimate confession is a project exhibition and programs are organized by guest curator Jennifer Teets

DESCRIPTION:Katrina Moorhead’s (of) Everything Island is an assembly of evocative sculptural objects interacting with one another in the main gallery. Building off Moorhead’s sensitivity to materials’ potential for expansive storytelling\, these objects explore places where the veil between the real and the otherworldly is thin and porous. The works reimagine aspects of the natural world\, referencing unearthly entities and apparitions\, flora and fauna\, culled from a disparate array of sources including Victorian evolutionary theory\, video games\, and traditional Irish fairy folklore to create a feminist exploration of grief\, empathy\, and resilience.

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston  the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

DESCRIPTION:Nathaniel Donnett\nDark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\nSolo Exhibition\n“For them\, as for me\, imagining is not merely looking or looking at; nor is it\ntaking oneself intact into the other. It is\, for the purposes of the work\, becoming.”\nToni Morrison\nThe University Museum is pleased to present Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\, Nathaniel Donnett’s solo exhibition at Texas Southern University. The artist’s multimedia works consider how people navigate space and time through nonlinear trajectories and ask how abstraction reflects our realities while offering multiple ways to perceive them. Donnett examines the role imagination plays in contending with obstacles in our lives that manifest as systemic limitations and constitute nuanced moments of discovery.\nThe exhibition takes inspiration from the life of Ed Dwight\, an ex-Navy pilot who almost became the first Black astronaut to enter outer space but was denied because of sociopolitical interference and racial hostility. He later reimagined himself and became a sculptor. Following that path\, Donnett’s works—textiles\, sculpture\, installation\, sound\, video\, and\, importantly\, community engagement in the form of a backpack exchange with students from historic Black neighborhoods in Houston (Third Ward\, Sunnyside\, Acres Homes\, Fifth Ward)—combine the unknown and the embodied to search out Black cosmologies and material constellations that act as poetics\, prompts\, processes\, and presentations for lived transformation.\nDonnett approaches his practice through the lens of Dark Imaginarence\, a concept of art\, everyday aesthetic theory\, and notion(s) of Blackness. The exhibition also reflects on theories concerned with fugitivity\, spatial understanding\, and becoming: Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space\, which describes the house as a shelter and universe allowing for dreaming and protection; Fred Moten’s notion of enclosure\, a psychological entrapment caused by social precarity; and Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias\, an engagement with the plurality of space and time.\nFor example\, the centerpiece of the exhibition\, Staring at infinity through the corners of asymmetry (2023)\, uses reclaimed materials to recreate a geometric form shotgun house that references histories embedded within architecture\, and expansive galactic dreams.\nDonnett’s process is as much philosophical as it is musical—and concerned with how everyday actions and common materials hold memories and serve as witnesses to\nlived experiences. His recent works investigate tensions between the rational and the irrational as a route for accessing generative ways of moving\, thinking\, and living hidden within our subconscious that might help us reframe and redefine ourselves—and negotiate life’s constraints. Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence asks: What could happen if we changed our questions from “What is the sum of two plus two?” to “What is the sum of two plus a spaceship\, divided by Earth\, Wind & Fire’s song’ Devotion\,’ multiplied by the first half of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solaris?”\nThis project is supported by the Guggenheim Foundation\, Houston Arts Alliance\, and the University Museum at Texas Southern University.\nNathaniel Donnett was born in Houston\, Texas. Donnett received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Texas Southern University\, and his MFA from Yale University School of Art. DESCRIPTION:These photographs are meditations on the constant and inevitable change in nature. The flow of water is one object\nof this contemplation. The flow of water and the human journey have parallels. According to Eastern philosophy\, mankind’s resistance to transformation leads to suffering.\nSelected photographs from three bodies of Timothy’s work emphasize “alternative” photographic processes: Tongues Turned to Stone (photogravure on gamphi-shi paper)\, Sanctuary (palladium on translucent vellum)\, and Long\, Long Journey to the Sea (gold-toned albumen). He chose these historical printing processes to evoke the timelessness of his content and his interpretive rather than documentary intent. In comparison\, a fourth body of work\, Watercourse Way (large digital prints on metallic paper) is a contemporary alternative to the hand-made nature of historical processes.

DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston  the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

DESCRIPTION:Join HCCC during Spring Break week for hands-on making and other activities that encourage visitors ages three and up to explore craft and art making!\nAlthough we are normally closed on Mondays\, HCCC will be open all week for this event.\nEach day of the week\, from 10 AM – 1 PM\, participants can experiment with different materials\, tools\, and techniques through hands-on activities demonstrated by teaching artists and volunteers. Families are also invited to spend time in the galleries sketching\, looking at art\, and talking with experienced docents. Visitors can explore the current exhibitions\, THIS SIDE UP and Fiber in 3D\, as well as our resident artist studios\, to gain insight into the inspirations and artistic processes of working artists. DESCRIPTION:Nathaniel Donnett\nDark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\nSolo Exhibition\n“For them\, as for me\, imagining is not merely looking or looking at; nor is it\ntaking oneself intact into the other. It is\, for the purposes of the work\, becoming.”\nToni Morrison\nThe University Museum is pleased to present Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\, Nathaniel Donnett’s solo exhibition at Texas Southern University. The artist’s multimedia works consider how people navigate space and time through nonlinear trajectories and ask how abstraction reflects our realities while offering multiple ways to perceive them. Donnett examines the role imagination plays in contending with obstacles in our lives that manifest as systemic limitations and constitute nuanced moments of discovery.\nThe exhibition takes inspiration from the life of Ed Dwight\, an ex-Navy pilot who almost became the first Black astronaut to enter outer space but was denied because of sociopolitical interference and racial hostility. He later reimagined himself and became a sculptor. Following that path\, Donnett’s works—textiles\, sculpture\, installation\, sound\, video\, and\, importantly\, community engagement in the form of a backpack exchange with students from historic Black neighborhoods in Houston (Third Ward\, Sunnyside\, Acres Homes\, Fifth Ward)—combine the unknown and the embodied to search out Black cosmologies and material constellations that act as poetics\, prompts\, processes\, and presentations for lived transformation.\nDonnett approaches his practice through the lens of Dark Imaginarence\, a concept of art\, everyday aesthetic theory\, and notion(s) of Blackness. The exhibition also reflects on theories concerned with fugitivity\, spatial understanding\, and becoming: Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space\, which describes the house as a shelter and universe allowing for dreaming and protection; Fred Moten’s notion of enclosure\, a psychological entrapment caused by social precarity; and Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias\, an engagement with the plurality of space and time.\nFor example\, the centerpiece of the exhibition\, Staring at infinity through the corners of asymmetry (2023)\, uses reclaimed materials to recreate a geometric form shotgun house that references histories embedded within architecture\, and expansive galactic dreams.\nDonnett’s process is as much philosophical as it is musical—and concerned with how everyday actions and common materials hold memories and serve as witnesses to\nlived experiences. His recent works investigate tensions between the rational and the irrational as a route for accessing generative ways of moving\, thinking\, and living hidden within our subconscious that might help us reframe and redefine ourselves—and negotiate life’s constraints. Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence asks: What could happen if we changed our questions from “What is the sum of two plus two?” to “What is the sum of two plus a spaceship\, divided by Earth\, Wind & Fire’s song’ Devotion\,’ multiplied by the first half of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solaris?”\nThis project is supported by the Guggenheim Foundation\, Houston Arts Alliance\, and the University Museum at Texas Southern University.\nNathaniel Donnett was born in Houston\, Texas. Donnett received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Texas Southern University\, and his MFA from Yale University School of Art. Nathaniel received the 2024 American Academy of Rome Affiliated Fellowship\, a 2022 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship\, a 2022 Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant\, a Dean’s Critical Practice Research Grant from Yale\, and an Art and Social Justice Initiative Grant from Yale (2020)\, among others.\nHis work has been exhibited nationally at The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art\, Bentonville\, AK; the Virginia Museum of Fine Art\, Richmond\, VA; the Mennello Museum\, Orlando\, FL; the Ulrich Museum\, Wichita\, KS; Project Row Houses\, Houston\, TX\, The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art\, Virginia Beach\, VA\, The American Museum\, Washington D.C.\, The University Museum\, Houston\, TX\, The Kemper Contemporary Arts Museum\, Kansas City\, MO\, The Mattatuck Museum\, Waterbury CT\, The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston\, Houston\, TX\, and The New Museum\, New York\, NY.

DESCRIPTION:Buffalo Soldiers National Museum’s new rotating exhibition\, The Blue Helmets in Action\, focuses on the 93rd Infantry Division\, the first African American combat division to be activated during World War II.\nThe purpose of the exhibition is to educate visitors about this historically overlooked Army division. The exhibition follows the formation of The Blue Helmets\, their early history\, training\, service in the Pacific theater\, and occupation duties through to deactivation.
