DESCRIPTION:Discovery Green invites you on a journey to a bright future this fall at The TUNNEL. Visitors will experience 12-foot-tall structures arranged to form a 100-foot-long tunnel of magical light and sound. Other visitors may serve as “pilots” using an interactive device to manipulate the array and guide your path. Over 150 LED bars are pixel-mapped to create a vortex of light\, pulling visitors through. This interactive art installation was created by the Canadian group BIG ART and the tour producer is Creos.

Sometimes we aren’t even aware of certain changes until we reflect on our present and the events of the past. We are changed in the process and often wonder how we got to certain places in our lives. In this exhibition titled Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes inspired by the David Bowie song\, artists of Sabine Street Studios present works incorporating the ideas of time\, change\, and reflection\, connecting the past and the present\, all steering us towards an unknown future.\nThe exhibition is on view in the South Gallery and corridor of Sabine Street Studios. SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. MindWorks will encourage visitors to step into their own mind and explore how they think\, feel\, and react in a playful and exciting new way.\nResearched\, designed\, and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre\, MindWorks lets visitors explore and learn through a fully immersive experience – from writing a song with building blocks to understanding personality traits. Visitors can try their negotiation skills to play the world’s largest Pac-Man game and engage in critical thinking as they squeeze through unusual shapes and explore consciousness with help from a humanoid robot.

DESCRIPTION:In the wake of Hurricane Beryl this summer\, Houston witnessed thousands of trees and branches toppled and shattered across the city. Among the losses was the majestic Crepe Myrtle tree in our Craft Garden\, along with numerous other fallen branches. James Sterling Pitt\, a new resident artist and dedicated garden volunteer\, extends a unique invitation: join him in transforming these fallen branches into personalized walking sticks.\nUnleash your creativity by painting your walking stick with vivid colors and intricate patterns. Enhance its grip and aesthetic appeal by wrapping the handle with yarn for added comfort and texture. If you already have a stick\, feel free to bring it along to decorate!\nNote: This activity will take place outdoors and is on a first-come\, first-served basis\, while supplies last.\nHANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month\, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions or craft garden. SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. DESCRIPTION:Hooks-Epstein Galleries is thrilled to celebrate its 55th Anniversary and commence the 2024-2025 season with the opening of Deasa Turner’s “Whimsy and Chaos!”\, an exhibition of mixed media work. The exhibition will open on Saturday\, September 7\, 2024\, with an Artist’s Reception taking place from 5:00-7:00PM. Deasa Turner’s “Whimsy and Chaos!” will continue through Friday\, October 11\, 2024.\nAs exemplified in “Whimsy and Chaos!”\, the artwork of Deasa Turner is shaped by two guiding principles. The first is transmogrification\, in which Turner changes or alters an object\, often producing a grotesque or humorous effect. The second is her use of theatre to create the characters\, scene\, stories\, and theme of each piece. All is manifested from Turner’s gut response to humanity and the issues that impact her and the world\, inspiring a body of work that is bold\, layered\, intuitive\, and provocative. To Turner\, everything is about the human spirit and the true\, lived human experience.\nDeasa Turner was born and raised in Houston\, where she grew up acting and dancing. The theatre has been pivotal throughout Turner’s life\, laying the foundation of her relationship with the world and allowing Turner to express herself\, namely through her artwork. In 2022\, Turner’s work was featured in a vignette exhibition\, “Urban Jumble”\, at Hooks-Epstein Galleries. Her work has been featured in several group exhibitions in Houston\, including “Politics of SEX” at G Contemporary in 2023\, “Urban Images” at the Kinder Morgan Building in 2022\, “The Big Show” at Lawndale Art Center in 2021\, and “The Trouble with Toys” at Bill’s Junk in 2019. Centering intimate interactive dance and sound performances within a quilted installation\, PUSH/PULL invites audience-participants to explore notions of authorship and agency while questioning the patterns\, loops\, and illusions that we wish to escape. Finally Cody Arnall is exhibiting an installation\, “When You’re Done Dying”\, in the Front BOX Gallery. “When You’re Done Dying” \, is an immersive experience of light emitted from sculptural recreations of abandoned business signage manipulated by indiscernible forces.\nThe exhibitions continue through October 5\, 2024. DESCRIPTION:Redbud Arts Center is honored to present Artist Paul Manes with his exhibition titled “Paintings and Drawings\, 2024” in our West Gallery.\nPaul Manes has long explored compositional structures that verge on the “all-over\,” achieving a unique blend of dynamism and classicism in his work. His art places familiar\, recognizable images within a conceptualized framework\, creating a harmonious yet thought-provoking experience for the viewer. One of the most notable elements in his paintings is the recurring use of a bowl or half-spherical shape\, which has become his signature image. Manes’ palette is often restricted\, focusing on natural hues that interact with rich off-white tones of kaolin pigment and deep red-brown-black earth colors\, enhancing the depth and texture of his work.\nManes reflects on his process with a sense of playful experimentation\, particularly in his exploration of the bowl form. “I’ve painted bowls for a long time. An orb is fun to paint. Then you cut it in half and make them hollow\, and it’s ten times more fun to paint. You can stack them up and make designs in any way you want to. It fulfills my need to paint\,” he says. This approach reflects his willingness to continually evolve his aesthetic\, even as he remains rooted in certain thematic elements.\nHe describes his creative force as a natural progression rather than a deliberate intellectual exercise. “The brain just gets in the way. When I work\, thinking just gets in the way. Working interferes with thinking and vice versa\,” He allows ideas to emerge organically during moments of rest or routine activities\, like driving or reading. This separation of thought and action enables him to be prolific\, layering his canvases with textures and depth that reflect both his immediate reality and subconscious influences. The result is a body of work that is richly textured\, visually compelling\, and deeply personal.\nBio:\nPaul Manes was born in Austin\, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lamar University in Beaumont\, Texas in 1983 and went on to study at Hunter College in New York City. His works have been exhibited in one-person exhibitions across Texas\, California\, and New York\, as well as internationally throughout Italy\, France\, Monaco\, and Germany. His work was included in the 2016 exhibition Painting After Postmodernism in Brussels\, Belgium. Manes’ work can be found in the permanent collections of The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Tucson Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont; and in the private collections of Yoko Ono and Emeril Lagasse. The artist currently lives and works in Carbondale\, Colorado.

Her work spans across drawing\, painting\, sewing\, weaving\, and embroidery\, exploring complex themes such as identity\, race\, class\, labor\, and geography. These themes are deeply personal\, rooted in her experiences of home\, belonging\, and intergenerational storytelling.\nLaura’s art is heavily influenced by the lives of her family members\, who worked as migrant farmers and longshoremen along the Gulf Coast. These stories and histories are woven into her material choices\, where she incorporates both conventional domestic items like thread\, needles\, and scissors\, and commercial materials used in farming\, such as polypropylene sacking\, burlap\, and twist ties. These elements come together to create intricate and materially rich artworks that reflect the layered narratives of her cultural and familial background.\nHer artistic expression is further enriched by her Mexican-American experiences\, as well as her roles as a daughter\, mother\, and poet. Laura’s work often delves into the bonds of family\, the meaning of home\, and the ways in which personal and cultural histories intersect and evolve.\nWith an M.F.A. in Studio Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.A. (Honors) from the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, Laura’s educational background has also played a significant role in shaping her approach to art\, allowing her to explore and expand upon these themes with a deep sense of purpose and insight.

She earned her JD from Stanford Law School in 2013 and her BA from Rice University in 2003.

Opening on June 15\, 2024\, The Health Museum will debut the U.S. premiere of MindWorks\, a hands-on\, bodies-on psychology exhibition on loan from the Ontario Science Centre.\nMindWorks brings ideas like decision-making\, memory\, and emotions to life through playful\, interactive exhibits based on cognitive psychology. MindWorks will encourage visitors to step into their own mind and explore how they think\, feel\, and react in a playful and exciting new way.\nResearched\, designed\, and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre\, MindWorks lets visitors explore and learn through a fully immersive experience – from writing a song with building blocks to understanding personality traits. Visitors can try their negotiation skills to play the world’s largest Pac-Man game and engage in critical thinking as they squeeze through unusual shapes and explore consciousness with help from a humanoid robot.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege
DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.
