Visitors will experience 12-foot-tall structures arranged to form a 100-foot-long tunnel of magical light and sound. SUMMARY:Scenes From Films I'll Never Make
DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

Moving to our Window BOX gallery space we have “PUSH/PULL”\, a transdisciplinary exhibition project\, showcases new works by aisha tida\, ARCOS\, and Leila Mnekbi in the Window BOX gallery. Centering intimate interactive dance and sound performances within a quilted installation\, PUSH/PULL invites audience-participants to explore notions of authorship and agency while questioning the patterns\, loops\, and illusions that we wish to escape. Finally Cody Arnall is exhibiting an installation\, “When You’re Done Dying”\, in the Front BOX Gallery. “When You’re Done Dying” \, is an immersive experience of light emitted from sculptural recreations of abandoned business signage manipulated by indiscernible forces.\nThe exhibitions continue through October 5\, 2024. Visitors will experience 12-foot-tall structures arranged to form a 100-foot-long tunnel of magical light and sound. Over 150 LED bars are pixel-mapped to create a vortex of light\, pulling visitors through. This interactive art installation was created by the Canadian group BIG ART and the tour producer is Creos.

Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. Opening on June 15\, 2024\, The Health Museum will debut the U.S. premiere of MindWorks\, a hands-on\, bodies-on psychology exhibition on loan from the Ontario Science Centre.\nMindWorks brings ideas like decision-making\, memory\, and emotions to life through playful\, interactive exhibits based on cognitive psychology. MindWorks will encourage visitors to step into their own mind and explore how they think\, feel\, and react in a playful and exciting new way.\nResearched\, designed\, and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre\, MindWorks lets visitors explore and learn through a fully immersive experience – from writing a song with building blocks to understanding personality traits. Visitors can try their negotiation skills to play the world’s largest Pac-Man game and engage in critical thinking as they squeeze through unusual shapes and explore consciousness with help from a humanoid robot.
