SUMMARY:Big\, Hot & Sticky
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Center Houston is proud to announce their upcoming exhibition Big\, Hot\, and Sticky\, opening Thursday\, June 27\, 5:30-7:30pm\, and on view through April 23\, 2024. Curated by Dalia Munenzon and Maggie Tsang\, the exhibition commissions seven architects and artist to respond to Houston’s built and natural environment.\nHouston is Big\, Hot\, and Sticky. The metropolitan region is roughly 640 square miles\, and from east of Galveston Bay to west of Katy\, it is comparable in width to the State of Connecticut. For nearly one third of the year\, the city’s temperature climbs to at least 90 °F; and 2\,500 miles of slow moving\, flat waterways crisscross the city creating a swamp-like environment.\nHouston’s emergence as a metropolis\, like many American cities\, has been shaped by its defiance of the environment. From climate control to flood control\, the city is a hyper-engineered\, constructed landscape designed to resist the natural world. As Houston grows\, however\, so too does this tension between the natural and the human-made: from the shock of hurricanes and tropical storms to the chronic stresses of urban heat and nuisance flooding. In the face of these environmental challenges\, engineered and technological solutions have a limited impact\, and historically\, have also been sources of inequality. Instead\, what is needed is a more radical social\, cultural\, and ecological imaginary that recasts the city’s relationship to nature.\nBig\, Hot\, and Sticky\, spotlights Houston as a novel urban ecosystem: a constellation of highways\, waterways\, air-conditioned buildings\, remnant prairies\, and possums. This exhibition invites seven designers to respond to Houston’s provocation through critical histories\, design research\, and speculative projects rooted in the city’s urban landscape: How are environments\, climates\, and cultures co-constructed? What is the future of this notoriously air-conditioned\, car-centered\, energy capital? SUMMARY:Earl Staley: The Machine
DESCRIPTION:Sawyer Yards presents Earl Staley: The Machine\, a diverse showcase of the longtime Houston artist’s works on canvas at Sabine Street Studios’ North Gallery.\nThe artworks chosen for this exhibition are large\, densely colorful paintings on canvas that highlight Staley’s variety of approaches to image-making\, mark-making\, and his range of techniques. Even at this stage in his long career\, Staley continues to experiment\, attempting new and different ways of building and finishing a work. The paintings all exist somewhere on a wide spectrum of abstraction and pictorial quality\, as well as physicality. Though landscapes are evident in his work\, no subject is off the table for the artist. For Staley\, the most important considerations are that his pictures be “visually delightful\, intellectually stimulating\, and tell an interesting story.” He further writes:\n“I found my voice when I stopped thinking about making art and stared telling my life story.\nand “All art must contain love of life and an awareness of death.”\nThe exhibition is on view through August 31\, and is free and open to the public. Join the artist for a reception on Thursday\, July 18\, from 6-8pm.\nArtist Biography:\nEarl Staley grew up in the suburbs of Chicago\, Illinois and resides in Houston\, Texas. He is an artist and teacher with more than 60 years of experience. Mr. Staley holds Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. He taught at Washington University in St. Louis\, Rice University in Houston\, and the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, where he was chairperson of the Art Department. Today he teaches in the Fine Art program at Lonestar College in Tomball\, TX. Mr. Staley is the recipient of three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1981 he received the Rome Prize in Painting from the American Academy in Rome\, Italy and he resided in Rome for 4 years. Mr. Staley’s paintings look back to his artistic roots and forward to new interpretations of the myths and symbols embedded in his life.

SUMMARY:Dance of Gestures
DESCRIPTION:For her latest solo exhibition\, Dance of Gestures\, Houston-based Colombian artist Loriana Espinel\, takes inspiration from the pre-Columbian pictographs of the Chiribiquete National Park in Colombia to develop a visual system based on the intersection of two different styles of calligraphy: the fluid lines of Japanese ink painting and angular gothic calligraphy.\nDance of Gestures combines both abstract and representational approaches and goals. Espinel writes of her work: “I aim to create a mural that is both abstract and representational. The lines will suggest natural forms while being expressive and dynamic on their own. I want viewers to appreciate both the shapes and lines and their interplay”.\nThe exhibition is part of the annual Sawyer Yards program at Sabine Street Studios’ East Corridor Gallery\, a space dedicated to hosting exhibitions dedicated to the line as an essential\, conceptual element in visual art.\nThe opening reception will be held on Thursday\, July 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the exhibitions is on view from July 18 to August 31. DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. MindWorks will encourage visitors to step into their own mind and explore how they think\, feel\, and react in a playful and exciting new way.\nResearched\, designed\, and fabricated by the Ontario Science Centre\, MindWorks lets visitors explore and learn through a fully immersive experience – from writing a song with building blocks to understanding personality traits. Visitors can try their negotiation skills to play the world’s largest Pac-Man game and engage in critical thinking as they squeeze through unusual shapes and explore consciousness with help from a humanoid robot.

DESCRIPTION:It’s going to be another fantastic summer at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts!\nThis summer\, the Pearl has curated a one-of-a-kind exhibition that features toys as contemporary art. “The Toy Canvas: Artists at Play” features toys in photography\, sculpture\, mixed media and more.\nThis engaging exhibition explores the theme of play\, with art by FriendsWithYou\, Mitchel Wu\, Herb Williams\, Michelle Brooks and Tim Howell from FOX’s LEGO® Masters\, Madame Alexander dolls\, and many more!\nIncluded in the exhibition is an interactive play zone where visitors can discover their own creativity. DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

Through his use of color\, Jennings creates visually striking pieces that are dynamic and evoke intrigue.\nKelli Scott Kelley has been painting and collaging\, using vintage linens and other repurposed fabric supports\, which allows for a more ecological art making practice. Her pieces are inspired by the personal\, psychological and the sociopolitical. Kelley is moved by the exquisite beauty in the world\, as well as the absurdity and ugliness. Her art practice is a means to mine and express deep truths about the impending demise of the natural world.\nScott Madison is a sculptor who makes custom boxes\, furniture and lamps from various metals including aluminum\, brass\, bronze and stainless steel. He meticulously constructs his sculptures\, paying careful consideration to the texture\, shape\, and composition of each piece.\nSteve Murphy engages in the classical elements of sculpture\, form\, volume\, surface and edge. His body of work is the result of a continued reductive investigation of those sculptural elements.\nBecky Newsom creates sculpted painted canvases that result in intricate and delicate works of art that capture the essence of organic forms.\nAnn Stautberg photography largely stems from her home\, she photographs the sky and botanical silhouetted shapes as her garden is an ongoing source of inspiration. Each photograph is printed with archival inks onto stretched canvas\, she then tints the pieces with translucent photographic oils by hand.\nBob Russell is fascinated with the complex issues that make up one’s everyday life\, and the simple beauty one finds in nature when the time is taken to observe these things. Whether it’s a daunting cloud formation before a spring storm\, or an autumnal field of rust-colored grasses that line the highway blowing in the wind\, the intricate patterns on the backs of dragonfly larvae\, or errant marks made on freeway exits by truckers\, as the tires try to stay the course.\nFrank X. Tolbert 2 artistic career is marked by his ability to mix various mediums\, techniques\, and themes seamlessly. His works often delve into the intersection of nature\, culture\, and human experiences\, resulting in visually stunning and thought provoking pieces. Through his art\, Tolbert has consistently pushed boundaries\, challenging conventional norms and inviting viewers to engage in a deeper dialogue.\nThe opening reception on June 22 will offer attendees a first look at the exhibition\, an opportunity to meet the artists\, and engage in enlightening conversations about the works on display. SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

DESCRIPTION:Everyday life\, forks in the road\, and dead ends forcing us to alter course as time moves on are all natural parts of the human experience. Sometimes we aren’t even aware of certain changes until we reflect on our present and the events of the past. We are changed in the process and often wonder how we got to certain places in our lives. In this exhibition titled Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes inspired by the David Bowie song\, artists of Sabine Street Studios present works incorporating the ideas of time\, change\, and reflection\, connecting the past and the present\, all steering us towards an unknown future.\nThe exhibition is on view in the South Gallery and corridor of Sabine Street Studios. SUMMARY:Earl Staley: The Machine
DESCRIPTION:Sawyer Yards presents Earl Staley: The Machine\, a diverse showcase of the longtime Houston artist’s works on canvas at Sabine Street Studios’ North Gallery.\nThe artworks chosen for this exhibition are large\, densely colorful paintings on canvas that highlight Staley’s variety of approaches to image-making\, mark-making\, and his range of techniques. Even at this stage in his long career\, Staley continues to experiment\, attempting new and different ways of building and finishing a work. The paintings all exist somewhere on a wide spectrum of abstraction and pictorial quality\, as well as physicality. Though landscapes are evident in his work\, no subject is off the table for the artist. For Staley\, the most important considerations are that his pictures be “visually delightful\, intellectually stimulating\, and tell an interesting story.” He further writes:\n“I found my voice when I stopped thinking about making art and stared telling my life story.\nand “All art must contain love of life and an awareness of death.”\nThe exhibition is on view through August 31\, and is free and open to the public. Join the artist for a reception on Thursday\, July 18\, from 6-8pm.\nArtist Biography:\nEarl Staley grew up in the suburbs of Chicago\, Illinois and resides in Houston\, Texas. He is an artist and teacher with more than 60 years of experience. Mr. Staley holds Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. He taught at Washington University in St. Louis\, Rice University in Houston\, and the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, where he was chairperson of the Art Department. Today he teaches in the Fine Art program at Lonestar College in Tomball\, TX. Mr. Staley is the recipient of three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1981 he received the Rome Prize in Painting from the American Academy in Rome\, Italy and he resided in Rome for 4 years. Mr. Staley’s paintings look back to his artistic roots and forward to new interpretations of the myths and symbols embedded in his life.

SUMMARY:Dance of Gestures
DESCRIPTION:For her latest solo exhibition\, Dance of Gestures\, Houston-based Colombian artist Loriana Espinel\, takes inspiration from the pre-Columbian pictographs of the Chiribiquete National Park in Colombia to develop a visual system based on the intersection of two different styles of calligraphy: the fluid lines of Japanese ink painting and angular gothic calligraphy.\nDance of Gestures combines both abstract and representational approaches and goals. Espinel writes of her work: “I aim to create a mural that is both abstract and representational. The lines will suggest natural forms while being expressive and dynamic on their own. I want viewers to appreciate both the shapes and lines and their interplay”.\nThe exhibition is part of the annual Sawyer Yards program at Sabine Street Studios’ East Corridor Gallery\, a space dedicated to hosting exhibitions dedicated to the line as an essential\, conceptual element in visual art.\nThe opening reception will be held on Thursday\, July 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the exhibitions is on view from July 18 to August 31. All exhibitions and activities are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community.
