DESCRIPTION:Project Row Houses (PRH) proudly presents the second iteration of our Southern Survey Biennial with a Round Opening and Community Market.\nThis survey of recent works created by contemporary visual artists living and working in “The South” will feature installations in PRH’s historic row houses from Rabeeha Adnan (Richmond\, VA)\, Nic Brierre Aziz (New Orleans\, LA)\, Violette Bule (Houston\, TX)\, Carolina Rodriguez Meyer (Miami\, FL)\, Amy Schissel (Miami\, FL)\, Martin Wannam (Durham\, NC)\, and Jamire Williams (Houston\, TX).\nRound 57 opens on Saturday\, October 12\, 2024 at 3pm with porch talks from each artist. After the brief introductions from the artists\, PRH will present a $25\,000 prize to one participating artist selected by Guest Juror Kimberli Gant\, Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art\, Brooklyn Museum of Art.\nThe Art Houses will remain open to explore and experience from 4 to 7pm while artists and creative entrepreneurs take part in a community market along Holman Street\, and neighbors and visitors enjoy a festive\, family-friendly afternoon on the row. Nooney and the Zydeco Floaters will play in the courtyard behind the row houses.\nPRH Executive Director Danielle Burns Wilson launched PRH’s Southern Survey Biennial in 2022 to highlight the collective creativity of southerners and build a greater number of viable opportunities for artists living and working in the Southern region\, specifically residents of Alabama\, Arkansas\, Florida\, Georgia\, Kentucky\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, North Carolina\, Oklahoma\, South Carolina\, Tennessee\, Texas\, and Virginia. Kelli Scott Kelley’s “Nature Morte” explores the intricate relationship between life and death\, change\, nature\, decay\, and the passing of time through a series of captivating and thought-provoking works. Kelley\, is known for her enigmatic narrative paintings that incorporate collage\, using vintage linens and other re-purposed paper and fabrics. The found materials reference domesticity and the history of women’s handicrafts and allow for a more ecological art-making practice.Each piece in “Nature Morte” is imbued with Kelley’s signature blend of technical prowess and emotional depth\, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty and fragility of the world around us.

DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

DESCRIPTION:Marking a major shift in Maloney’s practice\, Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make\, introduces a selection of 10 new oil paintings made by the artist within the last year. As the title suggests\, a lot of the pieces were first conceived as ideas for films that for one reason or another never came to be. Rather than letting these stories fall into the ether\, Maloney breathes new life into them with his brush\, imbuing his images with elements of surrealism or abstraction to help portray the psychological state of his characters. This work stems from Maloney’s own battles with mental illness\, isolation\, and anxiety. However he balances everything with revelry in the comical absurdity of modern life. Maloney’s ultimate concern is with the power of stories and how we as an audience connect to them.\nThe exhibition is on view at Sabine Street’s East Corridor Gallery through November 2.

DESCRIPTION:The concept of opulence revolves around the symbols of wealth and status that hold significance within a particular community. This show highlights the urban trend of having gold teeth. Coined as grillz by Houston hip-hop culture\, gold teeth have historically held significance in the black community as a symbol of wealth\, success\, and individuality. In many African and African American cultures\, gold teeth are seen as a form of adornment and self-expression\, reflecting a person’s personal style and cultural identity. Additionally\, gold teeth have been used as a way for individuals to display their financial status and social standing\, especially in communities where traditional forms of wealth may not be as easily accessible. Overall\, gold teeth hold a special place in the black community as a symbol of cultural pride\, creativity\, and defiance\, reminding individuals of their heritage and the struggles they have overcome.

DESCRIPTION:This Fall\, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is honored to present “Roots & Reverence: Exploring Indigenous Perspectives on Art\, Culture\, and Identity.”\nDiscover the vibrant tapestry of Native American cultures through this immersive exhibition\, which showcases the artistic legacy and profound narratives of tribes across North America.\nVisitors will experience traditions that have been passed from generation to generation\, such as the intricate craftsmanship of basketry\, the symbolic power of pottery\, and the timeless beauty of beadwork.\n“Roots & Reverence” opens to the public Saturday\, September 21 and continues through January 4\, 2025.
