SUMMARY:Stagolee and the Funeral of a Dangerous Word
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere\nBy Thomas Meloncon\nThe play takes place in an office in a small town in East Texas where the local NAACP chapter is planning a funeral for the “N word”. At the same time\, a bigoted white man is on his way to that same office to have a frank discussion with the legendary Stagolee\, a black man known for his swagger. The two men have had a fight at their workplace\, and this “conversation” is actually a court-ordered intervention\, facilitated by a visiting Jewish psychologist. This new play examines different points of view along the racial divide and does so without judgement\, ultimately bringing its characters into a better understanding of each other. A world premiere production of nationally recognized Houston playwright Thomas Meloncon’s newest work.\nThomas Meloncon is an Associate Professor of Theatre in the Visual and Performing Art Dept. in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences at Texas Southern University. He is the author of plays that have been produced nationally and internationally. His poetry publications include Recollections and Poetry in E Minor. His list of plays includes\, Johnnie B. Goode published in Acting Up and Getting Down: An Anthology of African American Playwrights of Texas\, published by University of Texas Press\, The Man Who Saved New Orleans published in Callaloo: A Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters by John Hopkins University Press. His popular stage plays include The Diary of Black Men\, Whatever Happened to Black Love\, If Beds Could talk\, Jump the Broom\, and Where Were You in ’65\, to name a few. Mr. Meloncon is the Narrator on the recent Fade to Black “Thank You\, Ten” documentary film\, celebrating their 10 years of mentoring and producing new African American playwrights from across the U.S. He is the featured poet on several Jazz musical albums\, and his folksong\, “Ain’t Gonna Wait Too Long” can be heard in season 3 episode 6 of the TV series SNOWFALL. His many awards include The TSU IMPACT Award\, TSU COLABS Best Faculty Mentor Award-Theatre\, Induction into the Kashmere High School Alumni Hall of Fame\, two certificates of Congressional Recognition\, A Resolution from The State of Texas\, A Bronze Medallion from the City of Houston\, the Creative Writing Award from the Houston Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalist\, Community Service Award from the Houston Area Women’s Center\, and the Excellence in Community Health Education Award from The Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine.

SUMMARY:Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls
DESCRIPTION:Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places\, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community that would last for more than 90 years.\nImages of the still-standing small houses of worship\, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall\, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins\, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls\,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective\, 4101 San Jacinto\, Suite 116.\nKathleen Coleman\, a fourth generation Third Ward resident\, curated the exhibition.\nThese small churches resembled rural structures like those in many sharecropping communities near Houston. A few of these small congregations linger and tell the story of the Third Ward’s ever-changing landscape. Because of its proximity to downtown Houston\, the churches are often sold and inhabited by a younger demographic.\nHudnall and Carrington\, who attended Texas Southern University\, have been cataloging the Third Ward area for more than 30 years\, telling a story with their photos of the community block by block\, from past to present. Hudnall’s mentor\, Dr. John Biggers\, saw the shotgun houses as urban pyramids. Carrington’s mentor\, veteran photographer and teacher Herbert Provost\, instilled a love of photography and of the community in him as a student at Jack Yates High School.\nCollins\, a mentee of Carrington and the exhibition coordinator at The Collective\, will continue documenting the area from a new generational perspective.\nThe exhibition\, which continues through May 18\, is part of the FotoFest Biennial and is free to attend. An opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 23\, at 2 p.m. and an artists’ talk Saturday\, April 27\, at 3 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:The FotoFest Biennial 2024 central exhibition\, “Critical Geography”\, reexamines traditional Western and historical understandings of geography while expanding these investigations to new realms. Borrowing its name from the subdiscipline of geography that questions and challenges power structures\, inequality\, and the dominant ideologies shaping physical space\, Critical Geography explores how space\, place\, and communities are influenced by social\, economic\, ecological\, and political forces. By critically analyzing these dynamics\, the works in the exhibition provoke conversations around social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and transformative change.\n“Our intent is that the 2024 Biennial\, featuring both existing and newly commissioned works from local and international artists\, will allow viewers to engage in important dialogues around the social dimensions of space and our shared planet\,” says Steven Evans\, Executive Director of FotoFest. “We look forward to once again celebrating Houston’s vibrant art and photo community while embracing these new perspectives around place-making\, the image\, and geography.”\n“Critical Geography” features a diverse range of image-based practices\, representing artists from photographers and storytellers whose works shed light on systemic oppression\, violence\, and urgent environmental concerns to image-makers who appropriate mapping\, social media\, and technology in order to explore inequality in colonial and post-colonial contexts. DESCRIPTION:Li(sa E.) Harris (aka “Li”) opens This is the Day in John M. O’Quinn Gallery\, on Thursday\, February 15 from 5 – 7 PM. This exhibition will culminate on Monday\, April 8 from 12:30 – 3:01 PM with Li’s performance Onshore Trilling: What to Do When the Earth Sings the Bruise in Lawndale’s outdoor space at 4900 Main Street. Taking place during the total solar eclipse over Texas\, this performance will tap into the cosmic cycles of the earth and sky.\nLi’s practice focuses on the energetic relationships between body\, land\, spirit\, and place. She uses voice\, theremin\, electronics\, movement\, improvisation\, meditation\, and new media to explore healing in performance and everyday living. Often\, her projects unfold over time in acts. For This is the Day\, Li will assemble photography\, analog technology\, video\, and resonant sounds that reflect a survey of her past artistic practice\, especially her work Onshore Trilling and Please Have a Seat.\nLi’s performance Onshore Trilling simultaneously references Houston’s offshore drilling industry—key to its economy as a world capital for oil and gas—and the history of the Blues in the Deep South\, which\, as Harris shares\, were invented by “enslaved persons\, previously enslaved persons\, and their descendants\, like me.”\n“Trilling” is a musical term describing the fast oscillation between two pitches; it is vibration and energy. This is The Day. includes relics and electronics from Li’s family\, fused together to fill the gallery space with frequencies that erode in relation to the respective battery life of each object. Overhead\, perforated sails mimic the sky\, reminding us of ever-present cosmic constellations which orient our earth and dream spaces.\nFor visitors’ navigation\, the center of the gallery includes something that could be—a boom\, a cannon\, a telescope peering northward\, bringing 4900 Main Street (where the eclipse performance will take place) into focus.

DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:Nathaniel Donnett\nDark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\nSolo Exhibition\n“For them\, as for me\, imagining is not merely looking or looking at; nor is it\ntaking oneself intact into the other. It is\, for the purposes of the work\, becoming.”\nToni Morrison\nThe University Museum is pleased to present Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\, Nathaniel Donnett’s solo exhibition at Texas Southern University. The artist’s multimedia works consider how people navigate space and time through nonlinear trajectories and ask how abstraction reflects our realities while offering multiple ways to perceive them. Donnett examines the role imagination plays in contending with obstacles in our lives that manifest as systemic limitations and constitute nuanced moments of discovery.\nThe exhibition takes inspiration from the life of Ed Dwight\, an ex-Navy pilot who almost became the first Black astronaut to enter outer space but was denied because of sociopolitical interference and racial hostility. He later reimagined himself and became a sculptor. Following that path\, Donnett’s works—textiles\, sculpture\, installation\, sound\, video\, and\, importantly\, community engagement in the form of a backpack exchange with students from historic Black neighborhoods in Houston (Third Ward\, Sunnyside\, Acres Homes\, Fifth Ward)—combine the unknown and the embodied to search out Black cosmologies and material constellations that act as poetics\, prompts\, processes\, and presentations for lived transformation.\nDonnett approaches his practice through the lens of Dark Imaginarence\, a concept of art\, everyday aesthetic theory\, and notion(s) of Blackness. The exhibition also reflects on theories concerned with fugitivity\, spatial understanding\, and becoming: Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space\, which describes the house as a shelter and universe allowing for dreaming and protection; Fred Moten’s notion of enclosure\, a psychological entrapment caused by social precarity; and Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias\, an engagement with the plurality of space and time.\nFor example\, the centerpiece of the exhibition\, Staring at infinity through the corners of asymmetry (2023)\, uses reclaimed materials to recreate a geometric form shotgun house that references histories embedded within architecture\, and expansive galactic dreams.\nDonnett’s process is as much philosophical as it is musical—and concerned with how everyday actions and common materials hold memories and serve as witnesses to\nlived experiences. His recent works investigate tensions between the rational and the irrational as a route for accessing generative ways of moving\, thinking\, and living hidden within our subconscious that might help us reframe and redefine ourselves—and negotiate life’s constraints. Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence asks: What could happen if we changed our questions from “What is the sum of two plus two?” to “What is the sum of two plus a spaceship\, divided by Earth\, Wind & Fire’s song’ Devotion\,’ multiplied by the first half of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solaris?”\nThis project is supported by the Guggenheim Foundation\, Houston Arts Alliance\, and the University Museum at Texas Southern University.\nNathaniel Donnett was born in Houston\, Texas. Donnett received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Texas Southern University\, and his MFA from Yale University School of Art. Nathaniel received the 2024 American Academy of Rome Affiliated Fellowship\, a 2022 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship\, a 2022 Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant\, a Dean’s Critical Practice Research Grant from Yale\, and an Art and Social Justice Initiative Grant from Yale (2020)\, among others.\nHis work has been exhibited nationally at The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art\, Bentonville\, AK; the Virginia Museum of Fine Art\, Richmond\, VA; the Mennello Museum\, Orlando\, FL; the Ulrich Museum\, Wichita\, KS; Project Row Houses\, Houston\, TX\, The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art\, Virginia Beach\, VA\, The American Museum\, Washington D.C.\, The University Museum\, Houston\, TX\, The Kemper Contemporary Arts Museum\, Kansas City\, MO\, The Mattatuck Museum\, Waterbury CT\, The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston\, Houston\, TX\, and The New Museum\, New York\, NY.
