SUMMARY:FACES OF SUN AND WIND
DESCRIPTION:FACES OF SUN AND WIND is a new work from the Michele Brangwen Dance & Music Ensemble that explores the power of one person linking their energy to another\, as in a microgrid set up to deliver renewable energy to a community that has united to generate it. The mircrogrid is also a perfect metaphor for how activism can start with just one person and grow to the power of the many\, working together for meaningful change. FACES OF SUN AND WIND features choreography by Michele Brangwen and music by Jon Irabagon\, with sections of movement & music created in the moment by all performers.\nMichele Brangwen writes: “When the Amazon labor union leader Chris Smalls was asked “what is the single most important component of activism\,” he replied: “to start from a place of love.” When you think about it\, that quote is quite powerful. We have a lot of work to do to combat the climate crisis. I don’t think we are going to mobilize in the ways in which we need to if we approach it from a place of shame or anger\, but instead I think the progress will come from a place of love: love for each other and love for the earth. In creating FACES OF SUN AND WIND I wanted to create a work that would surround the audience with a feeling of welcome.”\nThe program will also include UNENDING\, a work inspired by the music of John Coltrane\, with choreography and costumes by Michele Brangwen\, music by Grammy-nominated composer & trumpeter Tim Hagans\, and movement and music created in the moment by all performers. UNENDING folllows the form of a traditional jazz tune\, with set choreography and music to the head and bridge\, and then improvised duets for dancers and musicians during the choruses.\nPerformers: MEREDITH FAGES\, CRISTIAN LAVERDE KÖNIG\, LINDSEY McGILL & MICHELE BRANGWEN\, dancers; TIM HAGANS\, trumpet; JON IRABAGON\, saxophone; THOMAS HELTON\, double bass; SAM KNIGHT\, drums.\nThe program will also feature ALLURE\, a short film created by composer and vocalist Angela Wang in collaboration with dancer & choreographer Lindsey McGill. Filmed in the Silos at Sawyer Yards\, ALLURE features a lone dancer (McGill) enticed by endless yards of billowing mysterious fabric to enter the caverns and explore the nature of longing. The film explores how our obsessions can lead us to places of fulfillment. The 4:38 minute film won best choreography music video at Rome Music Video Awards.\nThe FACES OF SUN AND WIND is made possible in part by funding from the Mayor’s Office Of Cultural Affairs/City Of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance\, the Puffin Foundation\, Cullen Trust for The Performing Arts and New Music USA. A masterclass with composer & saxophonist Jon Irabagon is being presented at Texas Southern University by the Michele Brangwen Dance & Music Ensemble in partnership with DACAMERA of Houston.\nThe Michele Brangwen Dance & Music Ensemble is pleased to announce a special discount ticket offering in partnership with the 4th Annual Houston Latino/a/x Contemporary Dance Festival\, produced by the Pilot Dance Project at the historic Deluxe Theatre. Audience members purchasing tickets for either the March 9th or 10th performance will receive a special code for half off their ticket price to the Latino/a/x Contemporary Dance Festival\, March 8-10. In the same way\, ticket holders for the Festival will receive a code from the Pilot Dance Project that can be used for half off tickets for the Michele Brangwen Dance & Music Ensemble’s performances.\nThe Michele Brangwen Dance & Music Ensemble is a contemporary dance and music ensemble featuring all new choreography and live original music in a performing environment where dancers and musicians break the boundaries of traditional ensemble interaction. In 23 years\, every performance has included live music and the musicians as integral parts of the visual stage imagery. We believe that the artist’s role in society is to communicate\, to challenge\, to open a dialogue that can both unite us and inspire meaningful change. We function like a jazz band\, and along with sections of choreographed movements and written music\, we use improvisation that comes out of the form\, concept\, and emotional life of the work. The Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble is based in New York City & Houston.\n“Lovely dancers & intensely focused musicians.” – Mindy Aloff\, Dance Writer & Critic\nVillage Voice Choice\, February 2017 – Elizabeth Zimmer\, Chief Dance Critic\, Village Voice\n“A joy to watch” – Adam Castaneda\, The Houston Press

SUMMARY:Deangelo McMahon\, Jr.: High-Speed Channel Surfing
DESCRIPTION:Hi-Speed Channel Surfing presents new work by Houston-based artist Deangelo McMahon Jr. Through still images that emulate classic television\, this exhibition explores mass media\, shared memory\, and censorship. In the featured paintings\, McMahon creates visual white noise with gestures such as cross-hatching and pointillism. These artworks carefully attend to color and scale\, bordering trompe-l’œil. In the words of McMahon\, this exhibition reflects “the ever-increasing role of technology in present-day life\, and seeks to remind the viewer of one’s own humanity amidst it all.”

SUMMARY:Li(sa E.) Harris: This is the Day
DESCRIPTION:Li(sa E.) Harris (aka “Li”) opens This is the Day in John M. O’Quinn Gallery\, on Thursday\, February 15 from 5 – 7 PM. This exhibition will culminate on Monday\, April 8 from 12:30 – 3:01 PM with Li’s performance Onshore Trilling: What to Do When the Earth Sings the Bruise in Lawndale’s outdoor space at 4900 Main Street. Taking place during the total solar eclipse over Texas\, this performance will tap into the cosmic cycles of the earth and sky.\nLi’s practice focuses on the energetic relationships between body\, land\, spirit\, and place. She uses voice\, theremin\, electronics\, movement\, improvisation\, meditation\, and new media to explore healing in performance and everyday living. Often\, her projects unfold over time in acts. For This is the Day\, Li will assemble photography\, analog technology\, video\, and resonant sounds that reflect a survey of her past artistic practice\, especially her work Onshore Trilling and Please Have a Seat.\nLi’s performance Onshore Trilling simultaneously references Houston’s offshore drilling industry—key to its economy as a world capital for oil and gas—and the history of the Blues in the Deep South\, which\, as Harris shares\, were invented by “enslaved persons\, previously enslaved persons\, and their descendants\, like me.”\n“Trilling” is a musical term describing the fast oscillation between two pitches; it is vibration and energy. This is The Day. includes relics and electronics from Li’s family\, fused together to fill the gallery space with frequencies that erode in relation to the respective battery life of each object. Overhead\, perforated sails mimic the sky\, reminding us of ever-present cosmic constellations which orient our earth and dream spaces.\nFor visitors’ navigation\, the center of the gallery includes something that could be—a boom\, a cannon\, a telescope peering northward\, bringing 4900 Main Street (where the eclipse performance will take place) into focus.

SUMMARY:Timothy McCoy: Beyond My Lens
DESCRIPTION:These photographs are meditations on the constant and inevitable change in nature. The flow of water is one object\nof this contemplation. The flow of water and the human journey have parallels. According to Eastern philosophy\, mankind’s resistance to transformation leads to suffering.\nSelected photographs from three bodies of Timothy’s work emphasize “alternative” photographic processes: Tongues Turned to Stone (photogravure on gamphi-shi paper)\, Sanctuary (palladium on translucent vellum)\, and Long\, Long Journey to the Sea (gold-toned albumen). He chose these historical printing processes to evoke the timelessness of his content and his interpretive rather than documentary intent. In comparison\, a fourth body of work\, Watercourse Way (large digital prints on metallic paper) is a contemporary alternative to the hand-made nature of historical processes.

SUMMARY:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage
DESCRIPTION:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage is the first major museum exhibition devoted to exploring the breadth and complexity of Black identity and experiences in the United States through collage. Works by multiple generations of living artists examine concepts such as cultural hybridity\, gender fluidity\, historical memory\, and notions of beauty and power.\nBy assembling pieces of paper\, fabric\, and repurposed materials\, the artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives within a fragmented society. The artists range from established luminaries to early- and mid-career figures\, including Mark Bradford\, Lauren Halsey\, Rashid Johnson\, Kerry James Marshall\, Wangechi Mutu\, Jamea Richmond-Edwards\, Deborah Roberts\, Tschabalala Self\, Lorna Simpson\, Devan Shimoyama\, and Mickalene Thomas. Multiplicity also features notable artists who are closely identified with the city of Houston\, such as Tay Butler\, Jamal Cyrus\, Rick Lowe\, and Lovie Olivia.\nThis groundbreaking exhibition brings attention to the richness of collage as an art form. Building upon the legacy of African American artists such as Romare Bearden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Faith Ringgold\, and Betye Saar\, contemporary artists make collages in an array of ways\, from traditional cutting and pasting to creating works digitally. Arthur Jafa takes digital collage a step further\, gathering highs and lows of Black experiences into his poignant video montage Love Is the Message\, The Message Is Death.

SUMMARY:The Voices of People. The Stories of Place. The Politics of Power.
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Center Houston is proud to announce their upcoming exhibition The Voices of People. The Stories of Place. The Politics of Power.\, opening Thursday\, February 22\, 6-8pm\, and on view through April 26\, 2024. Curated by Susan Rogers and José Mario López\, the exhibition amplifies and centers the voices and visions of twelve Houston communities and their leaders\, through video\, stories\, maps and photographs.\nThe Voices of the People. mediates and disrupts the relationships between public and private\, fast and slow\, the privileged and the overlooked\, the beautiful and the ordinary\, through a curated collection of visual\, text\, and audio storytelling focused on twelve Houston neighborhoods. The layered stories\, intertwined across mediums\, celebrate the power of people and the significance of place. Pasadena-based photographer Joe Robles IV worked with the curators\, Susan Rogers and Mario Lopez\, to develop life size portraits of community leaders\, standing firm in place. The portraits are a celebration of strength and resilience—of what it means to stand up to power\, to stand for rights\, to fight for change\, and embrace a different future.\nDialogue and conversations\, listening and sharing\, are critical components of the exhibit\, disrupting who makes and sits at the table\, and organized through a series of public events that privilege\, respect\, and promote community voice over those of experts. This dialogue is intended to explore intersectionality as it relates to people\, the places they call home\, and the power to imagine and achieve a new system with new values.

SUMMARY:Read Your Way to Writing Well: The Dark Comedic Story
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Nick Almeida\nTIME: Four Thursdays\, February 8\, 15\, 22\, 29\, 6:00–9:00 p.m. CST\nPRICE: Early bird price: $150 for members\, $180 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Friday\, February 2. After Friday\, February 2: $180 for members\, $210 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Online via Zoom\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\nWhen does humor slip into our lives? According to author Lorrie Moore\, in “times of collision\, emergency\, surrealism\, aftermath\, disorientation.” How odd\, then\, to consider why we laugh in darkest moments\, how humor often casts a long\, black shadow. In this workshop\, we will examine the work of four writers who specialize in the tragicomic: George Saunders\, Lorrie Moore\, Elizabeth McCracken\, and Jim Shepard. How do their stories make us wince in laughter and show us dark aspects of everyday life? And—most importantly—what techniques and strategies can we carry into our own work? Together\, we will study ways to braid the comic with its All darkness\, and darkness with unconquerable laughter.\nThis four-week workshop will center four short stories (one per week\, provided by the instructor) as well as discussions regarding any ongoing projects of workshop participants. The goal of the workshop is to develop a toolkit for the incorporation of what we call “dark comedy” into a writer’s storytelling. All with writerly aspirations and a good sense of humor are encouraged to join.\nThe story for our first class is Offloading for Mrs. Schwartz by George Saunders. Please read the story prior to class so we can jump right in.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. This project is generously funded by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, and Mid-America Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Laura Gutierrez: In Tarps I Trust
DESCRIPTION:In Tarps I Trust is a dance work by Laura Gutierrez inspired by themes of labor\, specifically blue-collar jobs. The work explores the physical labor Gutierrez witnessed throughout her father’s career as a billboard painter\, highlighting the materials that were ever present growing up in her household\, such as tarps\, ladders\, and ratchet straps.\nUsing her father’s materials\, Gutierrez focuses on their awkward and imposing nature\, before gradually incorporating them into dance and movement phrases such that they become partners in space. The performance was workshopped in the Summer of 2023 as part of a DiverseWorks residency\, produced in collaboration with MECA.\nIn Tarps I Trust is an innovative dance work that also creates a platform for dialogue around how different forms of labor are valued\, or undervalued\, including the work of artists. This theme will be further explored in a panel discussion and an exhibition of the work of Anthony Almendarez\, Hello My Name Is _____ March 1-16\, 2024.

SUMMARY:Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Nathaniel Donnett\nDark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\nSolo Exhibition\n“For them\, as for me\, imagining is not merely looking or looking at; nor is it\ntaking oneself intact into the other. It is\, for the purposes of the work\, becoming.”\nToni Morrison\nThe University Museum is pleased to present Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence\, Nathaniel Donnett’s solo exhibition at Texas Southern University. The artist’s multimedia works consider how people navigate space and time through nonlinear trajectories and ask how abstraction reflects our realities while offering multiple ways to perceive them. Donnett examines the role imagination plays in contending with obstacles in our lives that manifest as systemic limitations and constitute nuanced moments of discovery.\nThe exhibition takes inspiration from the life of Ed Dwight\, an ex-Navy pilot who almost became the first Black astronaut to enter outer space but was denied because of sociopolitical interference and racial hostility. He later reimagined himself and became a sculptor. Following that path\, Donnett’s works—textiles\, sculpture\, installation\, sound\, video\, and\, importantly\, community engagement in the form of a backpack exchange with students from historic Black neighborhoods in Houston (Third Ward\, Sunnyside\, Acres Homes\, Fifth Ward)—combine the unknown and the embodied to search out Black cosmologies and material constellations that act as poetics\, prompts\, processes\, and presentations for lived transformation.\nDonnett approaches his practice through the lens of Dark Imaginarence\, a concept of art\, everyday aesthetic theory\, and notion(s) of Blackness. The exhibition also reflects on theories concerned with fugitivity\, spatial understanding\, and becoming: Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space\, which describes the house as a shelter and universe allowing for dreaming and protection; Fred Moten’s notion of enclosure\, a psychological entrapment caused by social precarity; and Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopias\, an engagement with the plurality of space and time.\nFor example\, the centerpiece of the exhibition\, Staring at infinity through the corners of asymmetry (2023)\, uses reclaimed materials to recreate a geometric form shotgun house that references histories embedded within architecture\, and expansive galactic dreams.\nDonnett’s process is as much philosophical as it is musical—and concerned with how everyday actions and common materials hold memories and serve as witnesses to\nlived experiences. His recent works investigate tensions between the rational and the irrational as a route for accessing generative ways of moving\, thinking\, and living hidden within our subconscious that might help us reframe and redefine ourselves—and negotiate life’s constraints. Dark Matter\, Dark Energy\, Dark Imaginarence asks: What could happen if we changed our questions from “What is the sum of two plus two?” to “What is the sum of two plus a spaceship\, divided by Earth\, Wind & Fire’s song’ Devotion\,’ multiplied by the first half of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solaris?”\nThis project is supported by the Guggenheim Foundation\, Houston Arts Alliance\, and the University Museum at Texas Southern University.\nNathaniel Donnett was born in Houston\, Texas. Donnett received his B.A. in Fine Arts from Texas Southern University\, and his MFA from Yale University School of Art. Nathaniel received the 2024 American Academy of Rome Affiliated Fellowship\, a 2022 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship\, a 2022 Houston Arts Alliance Individual Artist Grant\, a Dean’s Critical Practice Research Grant from Yale\, and an Art and Social Justice Initiative Grant from Yale (2020)\, among others.\nHis work has been exhibited nationally at The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art\, Bentonville\, AK; the Virginia Museum of Fine Art\, Richmond\, VA; the Mennello Museum\, Orlando\, FL; the Ulrich Museum\, Wichita\, KS; Project Row Houses\, Houston\, TX\, The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art\, Virginia Beach\, VA\, The American Museum\, Washington D.C.\, The University Museum\, Houston\, TX\, The Kemper Contemporary Arts Museum\, Kansas City\, MO\, The Mattatuck Museum\, Waterbury CT\, The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston\, Houston\, TX\, and The New Museum\, New York\, NY.
