SUMMARY:Toc Toc\, une comédie de Laurent Baffie présentée par Et Voilà Théâtre
DESCRIPTION:September 6-7\, 27-28\, 2024\n8:00PM\n\nMECA@TBH-CENTER\n333 S. Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.

SUMMARY:Spirituality\, Sexuality and Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Explore how spirituality\, sexuality\, and our own mortality influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds. What if the solution for transforming our chaotic world lays deep in our bodies and imaginations? Spirituality\, sexuality\, and mortality are three charged themes at the core of both our individual and collective psyches. Religious traditions from east to west\, myths\, stories and rituals from all cultures\, treat these themes as “pearls” strung together in timeless and universal patterns of life embedded in the natural world all around us. Confronting these themes is key to removing the “filters” that block access to a greater consciousness\, thereby allowing us to live and experience life to the fullest. Join us as we explore how these “pearls” influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds through an examination of art – especially the cave paintings of Lascaux – lecture\, and discussion.

SUMMARY:Being There Free Film Screening and Concert
DESCRIPTION:Arthouse HOUSTON aka Friends of River Oaks Theatre and Buffalo Bayou Partnership co-present a FREE outdoor screening of the satirical film Being There. In partnership with Powered by People\, a community-led voter registration effort will also be included at the event.\nDirected by Hal Ashby (Harold and Maude\, The Last Detail)\, Being There stars Peter Sellers in one of his final film roles and\, according to the actor\, his best performance.\nThe program will begin with a solo performance by Ukrainian professional cellist\, Larysa Horichenko-Balema. A 2023 graduate from Lviv National Music Academy\, Larysa has an MD in Performing Art and has performed in European countries\, Türkiye\, and Middle Eastern countries with chamber ensembles\, groups\, bands\, and show orchestras since 2018. Following the war in Ukraine\, Larysa moved to the U.S. in October 2022 to start a new life and help her family and people as much as possible.\nFollowing the concert\, photo-based artist & visual researcher\, Jake Eshelman will introduce the film. Eshelman is the contributing editor of Ecological Thinking with Plantings Journal and is pursuing an M.A. in Ecology & Spirituality at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.\nGrab your picnic blankets and join us for an evening of reflection on important topics such as human nature\, life\, and American society. A limited number of chairs will be available for rental.\nFilm Synopsis: In one of his most refined performances\, Peter Sellers portrays the innocent and childlike Chance\, a gardener whose life takes an unexpected turn when his wealthy guardian passes away. Chance finds himself thrust into the wilds of Washington\, D.C.\, and unexpectedly becomes a celebrity. Guided by a tycoon (Melvyn Douglas\, delivering an Oscar-winning performance)\, Chance’s horticultural musings are mistaken for profound philosophical insights. Meanwhile\, the tycoon’s wife (Shirley MacLaine) sets her sights on Chance as her desired companion. Drawing inspiration from Jerzy Kosinski’s novel\, this satirical film\, both deeply melancholic and hilarious\, marks the culmination of Hal Ashby’s remarkable filmography in the 1970s. It serves as a meticulously crafted exploration of the ideals\, anxieties\, and media-driven delusions that shaped American culture during that transformative decade.

SUMMARY:CRY IT OUT by Molly Smith Metzler
DESCRIPTION:A 90 minute theatre production.\nJessie and Lina may be from vastly different financial backgrounds—Jessie is Ivy-educated and of the manor born; Lina has a night-school nursing degree and terrible credit—but they have one huge thing in common: they’ve been cracked open by the love they feel for their newborns. One coffee quickly becomes a daily coffee\, as Jessie and Lina laugh through the highs and lows of motherhood. But their intimacy is punctured when a stranger who lives in the mansion up on the cliff appears in the yard… A comedy with dark edges\, Cry It Out takes an honest look at the absurdities of being home with a baby\, the power of female friendship\, the dilemma of going back to work\, and the effect class has on parenthood in America.\nDirected by Rhett Martinez and featuring Whitney Zangarine\, Jason Duga\, Chaney Moore and Sammi Sicinski.
