SUMMARY:FACES OF SUN AND WIND
DESCRIPTION:FACES OF SUN AND WIND is a new work from the Michele Brangwen Dance & Music Ensemble that explores the power of one person linking their energy to another\, as in a microgrid set up to deliver renewable energy to a community that has united to generate it. The mircrogrid is also a perfect metaphor for how activism can start with just one person and grow to the power of the many\, working together for meaningful change. FACES OF SUN AND WIND features choreography by Michele Brangwen and music by Jon Irabagon\, with sections of movement & music created in the moment by all performers.\nMichele Brangwen writes: “When the Amazon labor union leader Chris Smalls was asked “what is the single most important component of activism\,” he replied: “to start from a place of love.” When you think about it\, that quote is quite powerful. We have a lot of work to do to combat the climate crisis. I don’t think we are going to mobilize in the ways in which we need to if we approach it from a place of shame or anger\, but instead I think the progress will come from a place of love: love for each other and love for the earth. In creating FACES OF SUN AND WIND I wanted to create a work that would surround the audience with a feeling of welcome.”\nThe program will also include UNENDING\, a work inspired by the music of John Coltrane\, with choreography and costumes by Michele Brangwen\, music by Grammy-nominated composer & trumpeter Tim Hagans\, and movement and music created in the moment by all performers. UNENDING folllows the form of a traditional jazz tune\, with set choreography and music to the head and bridge\, and then improvised duets for dancers and musicians during the choruses.\nPerformers: MEREDITH FAGES\, CRISTIAN LAVERDE KÖNIG\, LINDSEY McGILL & MICHELE BRANGWEN\, dancers; TIM HAGANS\, trumpet; JON IRABAGON\, saxophone; THOMAS HELTON\, double bass; SAM KNIGHT\, drums.\nThe program will also feature ALLURE\, a short film created by composer and vocalist Angela Wang in collaboration with dancer & choreographer Lindsey McGill. Filmed in the Silos at Sawyer Yards\, ALLURE features a lone dancer (McGill) enticed by endless yards of billowing mysterious fabric to enter the caverns and explore the nature of longing. The film explores how our obsessions can lead us to places of fulfillment. The 4:38 minute film won best choreography music video at Rome Music Video Awards.\nThe FACES OF SUN AND WIND is made possible in part by funding from the Mayor’s Office Of Cultural Affairs/City Of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance\, the Puffin Foundation\, Cullen Trust for The Performing Arts and New Music USA. DESCRIPTION:Li(sa E.) Harris (aka “Li”) opens This is the Day in John M. O’Quinn Gallery\, on Thursday\, February 15 from 5 – 7 PM. This exhibition will culminate on Monday\, April 8 from 12:30 – 3:01 PM with Li’s performance Onshore Trilling: What to Do When the Earth Sings the Bruise in Lawndale’s outdoor space at 4900 Main Street. Taking place during the total solar eclipse over Texas\, this performance will tap into the cosmic cycles of the earth and sky.\nLi’s practice focuses on the energetic relationships between body\, land\, spirit\, and place. She uses voice\, theremin\, electronics\, movement\, improvisation\, meditation\, and new media to explore healing in performance and everyday living. Often\, her projects unfold over time in acts. For This is the Day\, Li will assemble photography\, analog technology\, video\, and resonant sounds that reflect a survey of her past artistic practice\, especially her work Onshore Trilling and Please Have a Seat.\nLi’s performance Onshore Trilling simultaneously references Houston’s offshore drilling industry—key to its economy as a world capital for oil and gas—and the history of the Blues in the Deep South\, which\, as Harris shares\, were invented by “enslaved persons\, previously enslaved persons\, and their descendants\, like me.”\n“Trilling” is a musical term describing the fast oscillation between two pitches; it is vibration and energy. This is The Day. includes relics and electronics from Li’s family\, fused together to fill the gallery space with frequencies that erode in relation to the respective battery life of each object. Overhead\, perforated sails mimic the sky\, reminding us of ever-present cosmic constellations which orient our earth and dream spaces.\nFor visitors’ navigation\, the center of the gallery includes something that could be—a boom\, a cannon\, a telescope peering northward\, bringing 4900 Main Street (where the eclipse performance will take place) into focus.

SUMMARY:Timothy McCoy: Beyond My Lens
DESCRIPTION:These photographs are meditations on the constant and inevitable change in nature. The flow of water is one object\nof this contemplation. The flow of water and the human journey have parallels. According to Eastern philosophy\, mankind’s resistance to transformation leads to suffering.\nSelected photographs from three bodies of Timothy’s work emphasize “alternative” photographic processes: Tongues Turned to Stone (photogravure on gamphi-shi paper)\, Sanctuary (palladium on translucent vellum)\, and Long\, Long Journey to the Sea (gold-toned albumen). He chose these historical printing processes to evoke the timelessness of his content and his interpretive rather than documentary intent. In comparison\, a fourth body of work\, Watercourse Way (large digital prints on metallic paper) is a contemporary alternative to the hand-made nature of historical processes.

DESCRIPTION:Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage is the first major museum exhibition devoted to exploring the breadth and complexity of Black identity and experiences in the United States through collage. Works by multiple generations of living artists examine concepts such as cultural hybridity\, gender fluidity\, historical memory\, and notions of beauty and power.\nBy assembling pieces of paper\, fabric\, and repurposed materials\, the artists create unified compositions that express the endless possibilities of Black-constructed narratives within a fragmented society. The artists range from established luminaries to early- and mid-career figures\, including Mark Bradford\, Lauren Halsey\, Rashid Johnson\, Kerry James Marshall\, Wangechi Mutu\, Jamea Richmond-Edwards\, Deborah Roberts\, Tschabalala Self\, Lorna Simpson\, Devan Shimoyama\, and Mickalene Thomas. Multiplicity also features notable artists who are closely identified with the city of Houston\, such as Tay Butler\, Jamal Cyrus\, Rick Lowe\, and Lovie Olivia.\nThis groundbreaking exhibition brings attention to the richness of collage as an art form. Building upon the legacy of African American artists such as Romare Bearden\, Jacob Lawrence\, Faith Ringgold\, and Betye Saar\, contemporary artists make collages in an array of ways\, from traditional cutting and pasting to creating works digitally. Arthur Jafa takes digital collage a step further\, gathering highs and lows of Black experiences into his poignant video montage Love Is the Message\, The Message Is Death.

DESCRIPTION:Explore how we can choose to adapt in harmony with organic processes and shifting paradigms.\nAs the world struggles to control and understand Artificial Intelligence\, this powerful technology is already affecting our lives. But as conscious beings\, we have capacities and responsibilities that AI does not. What happens if we allow the rising tension between the realms of human and computer creativity call us to a psychic evolution? With awareness\, we can choose to adapt in harmony with organic processes and shifting paradigms. In this four-week course\, we will learn ways to be in touch with three basic but powerful human capacities\, and practice them together: being aware of constant change\, feeling “in relationship” with the world\, and noticing what is not yet fully conscious. We will allow our discussion to follow our personal insights\, and the class itself to evolve as we inquire into our experience. In the process we will develop greater capacity to be aware in other relational situations.

DESCRIPTION:Katrina Moorhead’s (of) Everything Island is an assembly of evocative sculptural objects interacting with one another in the main gallery. Building off Moorhead’s sensitivity to materials’ potential for expansive storytelling\, these objects explore places where the veil between the real and the otherworldly is thin and porous. The works reimagine aspects of the natural world\, referencing unearthly entities and apparitions\, flora and fauna\, culled from a disparate array of sources including Victorian evolutionary theory\, video games\, and traditional Irish fairy folklore to create a feminist exploration of grief\, empathy\, and resilience.
