SUMMARY:Fiebre
DESCRIPTION:In August 2023\, artists from Villa Clara carried out a tribute to Puerto Rican singer Calma Carmona at the Valhalla Viking Bar in Santa Clara\, Cuba. Abraham Machado Álvarez\, Amilkar Chacón Iznaga\, Laura Eternod Arencibia\, Rocío Bell Carrazana Rodríguez\, María Fernanda Chacón Rivera\, Reinier Luaces González\, Shalay López Abreu\, Marlie de la Caridad Osorio Vergel\, and Yordan Segredo joined forces in an exhibition entitled Fiebre\, a stunning showcase of contemporary art\, cultural diversity\, and a celebration of the intersection of different art forms. Through their works\, the artists explore the poetry and music of Calma Carmona\, seeking to connect with the Afro-Caribbean essence and the richness of Latin American and Caribbean culture.\nFor this iteration of Fiebre\, on view through August 17 at the Silos at Sawyer Yards Bay 200 Gallery\, artist and organizer Aime Rosales joins the artist cohort\, creating an immersive installation entitled Cancionero. The work consists of suspended prints on mylar that echo selections from songwriters of the past\, creating a dialogue between culture of the past and the present. Rosales initially transported this project to the City of Houston as a collateral activity in the Houston Latino Film Festival in March of 2024.

SUMMARY:Houston Black Dance Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Houston Black Dance Festival celebrates African and Diasporic dance in Houston. It invites dance artists/choreographers from Houston and beyond to share through four key components: performances\, dance workshops\, professional workshops\, and community gatherings. The primary goals are to provide a platform for local Black dancers to share their artistic practice and foster deeper collaboration; to further develop the infrastructure of Black dance in the city; and to situate Houston as a cultural hub and tourist destination to celebrate Black dance. There will also be performances by internationally-recognized artists coming from Senegal\, Democratic Republic of Congo\, and Philadelphia. In addition to having Houston-based teachers\, these out-of-town artists will teach dance workshops in techniques that are not currently available in Houston. These include Ndombolo\, Sabar\, and Mandinka dance. The goal is to bring world-class master dance teachers to Houston to increase access to these forms.

SUMMARY:Le Samouraï
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville\n(France\, 1967\, 105 min.\, in French with English subtitles\, digital restoration)\nSaturday\, July 20\, 7:00 p.m.\nSunday\, July 21\, 5:00 p.m.\nBrown Auditorium Theater\nIn a career-defining performance\, Alain Delon plays a contract killer with samurai instincts. After carrying out a flawlessly planned hit\, he finds himself caught between a persistent police investigator and a ruthless employer\, and not even his armor of fedora and trench coat can protect him. An elegantly stylized masterpiece of cool by maverick director Jean Pierre Melville\, Le samouraï is a razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture—with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:The Woman in Black
DESCRIPTION:By Stephen Mallatratt and Susan Hill\n“It was nine-thirty on a Christmas Eve…” Arthur Kipps is obsessed with a curse he believes has been cast over him and his family by the specter of a “Woman in Black\,” for it is believed that anyone who sees her will die. He hires a skeptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story to exorcise the fear that grips his soul. Things begin innocently enough\, but as they reach further into Arthur’s darkest memories\, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds… Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story is alive and well in this spine-tingler of a play!

SUMMARY:Betrayal
DESCRIPTION:by HAROLD PINTER\ndirected by SOPHIA WATT\nFrom the final meeting of two lovers to the inception of an illicit affair\, a love triangle unfolds backward as power dynamics shift in exhilarating and unexpected ways in Harold Pinter’s masterpiece. The most fundamental axioms of love and friendship are open for reassessment\, as we witness Emma\, Jerry\, and Robert navigate their own brutal and unexpected feelings about each other and themselves. Their story unfolds through cutting dialogue and ominous tension\, courtesy of one of the 20th century’s dramatic titans.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center
