SUMMARY:Fiebre
DESCRIPTION:In August 2023\, artists from Villa Clara carried out a tribute to Puerto Rican singer Calma Carmona at the Valhalla Viking Bar in Santa Clara\, Cuba. Abraham Machado Álvarez\, Amilkar Chacón Iznaga\, Laura Eternod Arencibia\, Rocío Bell Carrazana Rodríguez\, María Fernanda Chacón Rivera\, Reinier Luaces González\, Shalay López Abreu\, Marlie de la Caridad Osorio Vergel\, and Yordan Segredo joined forces in an exhibition entitled Fiebre\, a stunning showcase of contemporary art\, cultural diversity\, and a celebration of the intersection of different art forms. Through their works\, the artists explore the poetry and music of Calma Carmona\, seeking to connect with the Afro-Caribbean essence and the richness of Latin American and Caribbean culture.\nFor this iteration of Fiebre\, on view through August 17 at the Silos at Sawyer Yards Bay 200 Gallery\, artist and organizer Aime Rosales joins the artist cohort\, creating an immersive installation entitled Cancionero. The work consists of suspended prints on mylar that echo selections from songwriters of the past\, creating a dialogue between culture of the past and the present. Rosales initially transported this project to the City of Houston as a collateral activity in the Houston Latino Film Festival in March of 2024.

SUMMARY:Amanda Barry Jones “Ancestral Reverie”
DESCRIPTION:Redbud Arts Center is excited to announce our upcoming exhibition\, “Ancestral Reverie\,” featuring the works of artist Amanda Barry Jones. The exhibition will open Saturday\, August 3\, showcasing a captivating collection that explores themes of heritage\, memory\, and identity.\nAmanda Barry Jones\, known for her emotionally resonant pieces\, delves into the depths of ancestral connections and the reverberations of the past in contemporary life. “Ancestral Reverie” invites viewers on a journey through time\, weaving together personal and collective histories through intricately created ceramic sculptures.\nArtist Statement\nMy quasi-narrative artworks\, inspired by nature\, mythology\, and human ancestry\, draw on the cultural reverence and iconography of flora\, fauna\, and traditions. Using ceramics\, a material rooted in geological time\, I preserve culture\, convey messages\, and shape identity. Expansive landscapes and recurring sculptural forms\, like empty shells\, invite contemplation about humanity’s place and impact in the universe\, emphasizing the ephemeral nature of life and the passage of time.\nThis series\, Ancestral Reverie\, utilizes the unique effects of illustrating with glaze on ceramic wall forms to create abstract landscapes\, imbued with an eerie and haunting allure. Many draw inspiration from my childhood near the swamps of the Big Thicket\, echoing memories of the land that built me. Ethereal shapes emerge within these landscapes\, serving as a bridge to our ancestral past and the indigenous inhabitants who once traversed these lands. This tribute to those who preceded us features the sun or moon presiding over the horizon\, becoming an enduring connection to history and a visual thread weaving through our collective landscapes.\nPlease join us for the opening reception on Saturday\, August 3\, 6pm-9pm.\nFree and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:The Garden Theatre and The Sankofa Collective have joined forces to bring the beautiful story of The Color Purple to the stage. This musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel spotlights Celie\, a downtrodden young woman whose personal awakening over the course of 35 years forms the arc of this epic story. With a joyous score featuring jazz\, ragtime\, gospel\, African music and blues\, The Color Purple is a story of hope\, a testament to the healing power of love\, and a celebration of life.\nIn the early 1900s in rural Georgia\, Celie is a teenager giving birth for the second time. When her father offers her to a local farmer in need of a woman to raise his children\, she is torn from her beloved younger sister and begins to learn about the world outside her family’s humble residence. As years pass by\, Celie becomes resigned to her unfortunate lot in life\, but when newcomers Sofia and Shug enter and bring their fresh perspective\, she begins to understand that there must be more to life.

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege
DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.
