SUMMARY:Opening Reception | For the record by Kaima Marie
DESCRIPTION:Esteemed artist Kaima Marie is set to debut her latest solo exhibition\, For the record\, on Friday\, September 6th at ART IS BOND. gallery from 6 – 9 PM.\nOffering an immersive journey into the complexities of memory and place\, the exhibition invites audiences to engage with Marie’s intricate and layered compositions. Each collage serves as a fragmented record of time\, visually representing the simultaneous cacophony and harmony of memory.\nThis collection of works draws from Marie’s nostalgic love for physical media\, exploring images as repositories of knowledge. She weaves textures and spaces with a tactile richness that transforms into a captivating visual journey. For the record intertwines the historical essence of Houston\, the artist’s hometown\, with her signature meditation on urban public spaces. Unique cultural markers of Houston\, such as the iconic Astrodome and Astroworld\, coexist with local landmarks like St. James United Methodist Church and the former headquarters of KCOH radio station. Marie also incorporates childhood photos from her personal archives\, blending these elements to create large-scale collages that explore the creation of self informed by both personal and collective memories.

SUMMARY:Transient Vistas- Opening
DESCRIPTION:Transient Vistas delves into the intangible essence of places that are slipping away\, either through human intervention or the relentless march of “progress.” Through a nuanced lens\, we examine the landscapes that bear the weight of history\, witnessing the layers of stories embedded in each terrain. This exhibition prompts reflection on the connections between individuals\, their customs\, and the environments they inhabit—a delicate ecosystem that can be cherished\, obliterated\, or simply overlooked.\n5601 Navigation

This beautifully haunting interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 fairytale follows the troubled mermaid heroine on a journey between the divergent worlds of land and sea—one utterly complex\, the other magnificently serene. With sets and costumes of grand scale displayed in a captivating blend of colors and shadows\, complemented by an original score by composer Lera Auerbach\, this intricate love story\, deeply rooted in Andersen’s 1837 fairytale follows the mysterious mermaid heroine\, makes its long-awaited debut in Houston.\nOnstage Dinner | Friday\, September 6\, 2024\nCo-Chairs: Mignon & Steve Gill and Fady Armanious & Bill Baldwin\nHonoree: Lauren Anderson

DESCRIPTION:by HAROLD PINTER\ndirected by SOPHIA WATT\nFrom the final meeting of two lovers to the inception of an illicit affair\, a love triangle unfolds backward as power dynamics shift in exhilarating and unexpected ways in Harold Pinter’s masterpiece. The most fundamental axioms of love and friendship are open for reassessment\, as we witness Emma\, Jerry\, and Robert navigate their own brutal and unexpected feelings about each other and themselves. Their story unfolds through cutting dialogue and ominous tension\, courtesy of one of the 20th century’s dramatic titans.

SUMMARY:Toc Toc\, une comédie de Laurent Baffie présentée par Et Voilà Théâtre
DESCRIPTION:September 6-7\, 27-28\, 2024\n8:00PM\n\nMECA@TBH-CENTER\n333 S. Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.

SUMMARY:Mahjong\, the I Ching\, and Life: Theories of Decision Making (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Meet ample images with which we can think in different ways about how we make choices. Mahjong is a game from the far East played with ceramic or plastic tiles\, now popular all around the world. Like chess\, it not only requires the ability to think ahead\, but to decide on the next best move in the present moment. The I Ching (or ‘Book of Changes’) is a vast repository of countless generations of psychological insight and social and political philosophy. It is also an ancient form of divination or prediction\, and a respected method of making difficult decisions in uncertain situations. When we view our lives as a journey whose twists and turns are identical to the decisions we make\, Mahjong and the I Ching become ample images in which we can think in different ways about how we make choices. Join C.C. Lee for an introduction to these incredible heirlooms of Chinese culture\, and explore their implications for decision-making in all aspects of life.
