SUMMARY:Toc Toc\, une comédie de Laurent Baffie présentée par Et Voilà Théâtre
DESCRIPTION:September 6-7\, 27-28\, 2024\n8:00PM\n\nMECA@TBH-CENTER\n333 S. Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.

SUMMARY:The Old Ways Must Go: Tarot for Transformation
DESCRIPTION:How dare we hope for futures we cannot yet imagine? Learn how using old tools in new ways can offer a scaffolding for moving past fear and grief\, and into the possibility of new paradigms. The tarot – or the use of image-heavy cards to illicit intuitions about a hidden present or future reality – began its life as simple playing cards. These simple cards were “hacked” by the practice of divination: their historical and cultural context was completely reimagined\, and they were made to perform in new and unexpected ways. Join us as we “hack” the tarot again\, and find solutions and deep collaboration with shared imagery. Bring your own tarot or other art-centric deck of cards (or simply a set of meaningful images) and join with others in structured play. Discover solutions to problems through honoring what must pass\, and by and weaving together ideas for what’s next.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception | Kathy Vargas: Light Needs Shadow Needs Light...
DESCRIPTION:As Kathy Vargas reflects on her remarkable decades-long career in the arts—as an artist\, art administrator\, mentor\, activist\, and curator—”Light Needs Shadow Needs Light…” serves as a meditation on the past\, present\, and future\, exploring themes of life\, love\, and death. Through four distinct series of meticulously composed\, hand-painted\, silver gelatin photographs\, Vargas weaves together the personal and the political\, layering references to fantastical elements from her father’s Mexican folklore and her mother’s devout Catholic beliefs.\nViewers are first introduced with the installation “Shopping for Bargains”\, an ongoing exploration of the hidden costs of consumerism\, where Vargas captures the intricate details of fabrics—lace\, embroidery\, and patterns—juxtaposed with highly discounted price tags. This series highlights the disparity between the visible cost of fast fashion and the often unseen price paid by laborers\, critiquing the illusion of bargains and the true cost of consumption. It continues with “The Living Move\,” featuring six blurred portraits\, including a self-portrait\, that evoke early 20th-century portraiture with subjects seated for long periods. These images of Vargas’s loved ones\, layered with thorns\, flowers\, fabric\, and writing\, symbolize the essence of life and human connection.\nInstalled as a monumental cross\, “Oración: Valentine’s Day/Day of the Dead” honors those lost during the AIDS epidemic\, transforming grief into art and offering a profound meditation on mortality through the act of remembrance as resurrection. Finally\, “Este Recuerdo” serves as a tribute to Vargas’s family sacrifices and the powerful women who raised her\, merging personal and political narratives into a poignant visual history that reflects on her heritage and influences.\nEach photograph serves as an example of the artist’s mastery of the darkroom and photographic process. The harmonious montage of layered exposures\, recurring props\, brushstrokes that infuse life into the images\, and calculated scratches on the negatives invite viewers to investigate the magic in the in-between.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception | Beili Liu: Rising Water
DESCRIPTION:“Rising Water” is a compilation of works created by ALH’s 2024 Texas Artist of the Year\, Beili Liu\, across diverse global locations. Each piece is crafted to draw viewers in with the intricate beauty of Liu’s technique while simultaneously confronting them with the stark realities of climate change. Liu’s practice explores how climate issues intersect with labor\, migration\, and social concerns\, weaving these themes into a cohesive narrative that reflects the complexity of our global environmental crisis.\nEach artwork in the exhibition is intimately connected to the specific environment in which it was created\, reflecting the unique environmental and social issues of that locale. From documenting the deteriorating walls of her studio in the sinking city of Venice to capturing the gathered ocean plastic debris along multiple coastlines\, Liu collects intimate evidence of the climate crisis while studying complex ecological and sociopolitical challenges of new environments. Despite these localized inspirations\, Liu’s work possesses a profound universality. The themes she addresses resonate beyond their geographic origins\, speaking to broader environmental and social challenges that affect communities worldwide.\nIn Houston\, a city that has experienced a notable increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods\, Liu’s work takes on additional layers of meaning. The exhibition’s exploration of climate-induced displacement and environmental degradation finds a particularly poignant echo in Houston’s own struggles with these issues. Through her art\, Liu not only underscores the global nature of the climate crisis but also invites viewers to reflect on its local impacts and the interconnectedness of our responses to these challenges.\nThe monograph “Beili Liu: Mend\,” published by Art League Houston and designed by Isobel Chiang of Small Editions\, will be released in conjunction with this exhibition. The publication features six essays by Edward Chambers\, Annette DiMeo Carlozzi\, Bridget Bray\, Katie Pfohl\, Kay Whitney\, and Benjamin Hickey.

DESCRIPTION:Introduced by Kirston Otis\, Lead Audio-Visual Technician\nThe year is 2024. The world is still recovering from a worldwide catastrophe\, watching films outside\, with women’s rights under siege and leaders that are totalitarian weirdos. Oh\, and dogs are telepathic. If this sounds familiar\, you might be Don Johnson from Miami Vice. Or you might be Tiger\, the shaggy dog from The Brady Bunch. And if neither of those applies to you\, then you are actually in the world of A Boy and His Dog\, L.Q. Jones’s influential film from 1975\, brought to you on an original 35mm print from the 1975 theatrical run.
