SUMMARY:Spirituality\, Sexuality and Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Explore how spirituality\, sexuality\, and our own mortality influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds. What if the solution for transforming our chaotic world lays deep in our bodies and imaginations? Spirituality\, sexuality\, and mortality are three charged themes at the core of both our individual and collective psyches. Religious traditions from east to west\, myths\, stories and rituals from all cultures\, treat these themes as “pearls” strung together in timeless and universal patterns of life embedded in the natural world all around us. Confronting these themes is key to removing the “filters” that block access to a greater consciousness\, thereby allowing us to live and experience life to the fullest. Join us as we explore how these “pearls” influence the many complex relationships between our conscious and unconscious minds through an examination of art – especially the cave paintings of Lascaux – lecture\, and discussion.

SUMMARY:Toc Toc\, une comédie de Laurent Baffie présentée par Et Voilà Théâtre
DESCRIPTION:September 6-7\, 27-28\, 2024\n8:00PM\n\nMECA@TBH-CENTER\n333 S. Jensen Dr.\, Houston\, TX 77003\nIn French with English surtitles.\nDuration: approximately 2h30 with intermission.\nThis play is appropriate for high school audiences and adults due to language.\nCreated at the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris in 2005\, the comedy TOC TOC was written by Laurent Baffie and has been seen by millions of spectators around the world.\nLaurent Baffie: “I always try to put people in situations where they would not normally meet. As a child I had an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) myself\, and at the time\, people didn’t talk about it. As I researched the subject\, I realized that it was a serious issue and that it needed to be treated with sensitivity\, without making fun of the people affected.”\n\nIn this play\, six patients with six different obsessive-compulsive disorders meet in the waiting room of Dr Stern\, a specialist in the treatment of OCD. This internationally renowned neuro-psychiatrist only consults in France once every 2 or 3 years\, and never sees the same patient twice. But the doctor’s plane is stuck in Frankfurt. To pass the time\, Fred\, Sandie\, Blanche\, Marie\, Lili and Bob get to know each other and share their stories and their respective conditions. The final result is some real therapy\, along with a lot of bickering and humor along the way. A light\, funny play that tries to dispel all the preconceptions about OCD sufferers.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Sikhism
DESCRIPTION:Discover how\, despite its relative youth\, the influence of the Sikh faith stretches widely throughout India and into the English-speaking world. Sikhism is one of the newest world religions\, being only just over 500 years old. Despite its relative youth\, however\, its influence stretches widely throughout India and into the English-speaking world mainly due to specific social\, cultural and political factors. Houston\, for example\, has been home to a thriving Sikh community for many decades now. Who are the Sikhs and what do they believe? What is this religion about? And how did it spread so rapidly? In this short session\, we will discuss all these questions and more as we come to a fuller understanding of this amazing religion and its adherents.

SUMMARY:What Matters Most: Why Do We Suffer? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we discuss how misery really might have something to do with generating love and company. We all know that life has its ups and downs. We know that\, some of the time\, we’re going to experience difficulty and unease\, while at other times life will feel easy and natural. Unfortunately\, this knowledge can’t adequately reflect the true experience of being in the darkest places we could ever find ourselves. In true darkness\, we begin to wonder if we’ll ever see the light again. We might feel like life could never be anything other than the suffering we’re facing\, or that the rest of our lives will be forever changed because of our suffering.

SUMMARY:Fiction Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Creating Fiction through Generative Revision – Online Workshop\nEmerging writers are familiar with the experience of a story that starts off strong and is a joy to write\, but later becomes a labor that goes unfinished. This workshop will focus on techniques to deal with this loss of momentum. We have this idea that great work comes to other writers in one neat\, complete package. It’s only through experience that we learn that the best writing is achieved with patience and intentional work through layers of thoughtful\, generative revision. In this eight-week fiction workshop\, we will strategically analyze works of published fiction and workshop our own stories in small groups as we work through a layered drafting schedule to bring to life a fully developed short story that is grounded in inspiration from life.\nAbout the instructor:\nPATRICK STOCKWELL is the author of The Light Here Changes Everything\, winner of the Clay Reynolds Novella Prize. His work can also be found in Gulf Coast\, Glass Mountain\, and elsewhere. He is an Inprint MD Anderson Foundation fellow and PhD candidate in fiction at the University of Houston and holds an MFA from New Mexico State University.
