SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of recent sculpture by Tracye Wear. Wear is inspired by her combined interests in Cubist and early 20th Century sculpture with natural forms found in her garden.\n“With her latest series\, Tracye Wear pushes the scale limitations of the ceramic arts while reveling in the life-affirming forms of nature. Not thrown on a potter’s wheel\, these contours are molded\, shaped\, and coil-built\, but become organic beings. Decidedly of the hand\, these vessels’ surfaces are smoothed and rounded yet often animated by the controlled indentations of human fingers.\nTransferring her real-life skills with plants\, soil\, water\, and sunlight from her home’s backyard\, she enters a related studio terrain of pliable clay\, moisture\, the alchemy of glazes\, and finally intense heat. By reenacting the mysteries of how vegetation sprouts and thrives as transformed by photosynthesis\, Wear introduces a verdant vocabulary of seeds\, tendrils\, leaves\, and blossoms to spiraling\, bulbous\, and seemingly pregnant vessels.\nThe artist resists the allure of boldly colored and glossy glazes\, for the most part\, instead seeking the subtleties inherent in transition and gradation. Her experimentation with the layer upon layer of colored glazes—when applied to protruding ribs and sinking recesses—embraces the chemical interactions and revelations that result from the extreme temperatures of high-firing. The transformative heat of the kiln itself provides a final chance interpretation of Wear’s otherwise intentioned deployment of palette and light.\nAlong the way\, viewers may recognize allusions to the Venus of Willendorf\, Hieronymous Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights\, Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Tower of Babel\, or the shadow and light of Dutch floral still lifes. SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

SUMMARY:"Ken Luce: On Target" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Reeves Art + Design is excited to announce “Ken Luce: On Target.” The exhibition will be on view June 13th\, 2024 through June 29th\, 2024. The opening reception will take place on Thursday\, June 13th\, 2024\, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.\nIn 1984 Ken Luce made his first trip to New York. On that trip he saw many things\, but none more important than “Primitivism in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern” at the Museum of Modern Art. Inspired by this iconic exhibition\, he returned to his studio on the Houston Ship Channel and began making found object sculptures. By 1986\, Luce had built a new studio and started producing a surge of new art\, particularly a body of collage works on 60×40 Arches paper. Starting with two snowmen works\, both titled “Van Gogh on acid\,” the snowman became a recurring theme for Luce and a metaphor in his work for a white man in the late 20th century.\nThese pieces eventually expanded to include the black and tan targets from which the title of the show is derived. Always an outdoorsman\, Luce was at a shooting range in South Houston one day practicing with his .38 snub nose revolver\, shooting what he called full body targets. Having recently been involved in an armed robbery and having a .357 pointed at his face\, he became enamored with them and took 10 home. Once these 9 collages were finished\, Luce put them in a portfolio and stored them under his large worktable for over thirty years. He only recently rediscovered them after a studio visit with Alison De Lima Green\, the Modern Curator at the MFAH. Upon rediscovery\, he felt them to be prescient of current discussions around gun violence.\nAs Eugene Binder described\, “Luce’s work breaks down preconceived barriers with wit and humor\, sometimes subtle\, sometimes not. It’s a strategy that enables him to take his work beyond judgment\, predefined boundaries\, engaging with the viewer\, while sharing the importance of enjoyment he derives in making each object unmistakably his own.”

DESCRIPTION:Students will learn how to throw small and medium forms on the wheel with the guidance of our instructors. We will also teach wedging\, trimming\, handles\, and underglaze techniques.\nAll materials provided\, aprons are recommended but not required. Wear clothing that can get dirty\, hair should be back and no jewelry or watches. You are welcome to bring a light snack each day if needed.\nAges 13-17 years old\nDrop off starts at 12:45pm\, pick up by 4:15pm\nWork will be ready for pick up 3 weeks after class.

SUMMARY:Cian Dayrit: Liberties Were Taken
DESCRIPTION:The phrase “counter-cartographies” describes Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit interdisciplinary practice of transforming historic maps into portraits of contemporary social conditions. Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.
