SUMMARY:What Is A Ward?
DESCRIPTION:What defines a Ward\, or in a more modern sense of the word\, a neighborhood? Sabine Street Studios is located in Houston’s historic First Ward\, meaning the first developed in Houston. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu  Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston  the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. Since its beginning in 1932\, the Rodeo has committed more than $575 million to Texas youth and education.\nAbout the Exhibitor: The Western Art Committee focuses on bringing important memorabilia and Western art\, including monumental bronzes\, to Show offices and facilities. SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.

His work is hand drawn with shellac ink on paper. SUMMARY:Brenda Biondo: Sun to Earth
DESCRIPTION:Koslov Larsen is pleased to present Sun to Earth\, the gallery’s third solo presentation by artist Brenda Biondo. Combining several series of Biondo’s works\, Sun to Earth introduces new ways of looking at common subjects while challenging viewers’ perception of color and three-dimensional space. The works explored throughout the show focus on atmospheric phenomena and other ephemeral components of the natural world. Unnatural (Texas Tumbleweeds) and Prairie Wheels study the interconnectedness of humans and flora\, inspired by the iconic tumbleweed\, an invasive species brought inadvertently to the United States in the 1870s by Eastern European settlers. Influenced heavily by James Turrell’s Skyspaces\, Perceptual Skies emphasizes the limitless potential of light as a subject and the subjectivity of perception. Biondo states\, “Using a visual language that deconstructs the sky portion of the landscape helps articulate questions about how we engage with our environment and the emotional and psychological effects natural light has on humans.” The images in the series follow the formal aesthetics of modern painting\, particularly minimalism\, while emphasizing the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced.\nSun to Earth will be on view at Koslov Larsen from May 3 – June 21\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of recent sculpture by Tracye Wear. Wear is inspired by her combined interests in Cubist and early 20th Century sculpture with natural forms found in her garden.\n“With her latest series\, Tracye Wear pushes the scale limitations of the ceramic arts while reveling in the life-affirming forms of nature. Not thrown on a potter’s wheel\, these contours are molded\, shaped\, and coil-built\, but become organic beings. Decidedly of the hand\, these vessels’ surfaces are smoothed and rounded yet often animated by the controlled indentations of human fingers.\nTransferring her real-life skills with plants\, soil\, water\, and sunlight from her home’s backyard\, she enters a related studio terrain of pliable clay\, moisture\, the alchemy of glazes\, and finally intense heat. By reenacting the mysteries of how vegetation sprouts and thrives as transformed by photosynthesis\, Wear introduces a verdant vocabulary of seeds\, tendrils\, leaves\, and blossoms to spiraling\, bulbous\, and seemingly pregnant vessels.\nThe artist resists the allure of boldly colored and glossy glazes\, for the most part\, instead seeking the subtleties inherent in transition and gradation. Her experimentation with the layer upon layer of colored glazes—when applied to protruding ribs and sinking recesses—embraces the chemical interactions and revelations that result from the extreme temperatures of high-firing. The transformative heat of the kiln itself provides a final chance interpretation of Wear’s otherwise intentioned deployment of palette and light.\nAlong the way\, viewers may recognize allusions to the Venus of Willendorf\, Hieronymous Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights\, Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Tower of Babel\, or the shadow and light of Dutch floral still lifes. SUMMARY:Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence
DESCRIPTION:Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence showcases Kehinde Wiley’s new\, monumental body of work\, with large-scale paintings and sculptures of men and women in repose. Through his work\, with detailed portrayals of Black and Brown individuals\, the artist confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence and injustice.\nIn this body of work\, Wiley uses the visual language of heroes\, martyrs\, and saints as portrayed in Western European historical art. His work expands on his “Down” series from 2008\, which was inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s 16th-century painting The Dead Christ in the Tomb. For Wiley\, Holbein’s painting triggered an ongoing investigation into the iconography of repose and sacrifice in Western art.\nWiley\, one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists\, created this body of work against the background of the pandemic and the global rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. The works in An Archaeology of Silence stand as elegies and monuments\, underscoring the terms in which Black people are seen and heard.\nIn his words: “That is the archaeology I am unearthing: The specter of police violence and state control over the bodies of young Black and Brown people all over the world.”\nThe exhibition premiered earlier this year at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, and the MFAH is the first stop on the tour.

SUMMARY:Vertigo of Color: Matisse\, Derain\, and the Origins of Fauvism
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1905\, Henri Matisse and André Derain embarked on a creative partnership that would change the course of French painting. The two painters experimented with daring directions in energetic bursts of color\, form\, and structure that eventually led to a boldly inventive artistic language known as Fauvism (from the French fauve\, or “wild beast”).\nWhile staying in the modest French fishing village of Collioure\, Matisse (1869–1954) and Derain (1880–1954) drew from local surroundings as they experienced the bustling life of the port\, the quiet beaches\, and surrounding landscapes. A new aesthetic of color and light was in process.\nVertigo of Color features many of the most celebrated works of Fauvism. The exhibition presents\, for the first time in the United States\, the legacy of that legendary summer through paintings\, drawings\, and watercolors by the two artists\, on loan from national and international museums and private collections.\nTheir evolving visual language grew from sensory experience of a moment in time\, rather than reality. As Matisse wrote\, “My choice of colors does not rest on any scientific theory; it is based on observation\, on feeling\, on the experience of my sensibility.”

SUMMARY:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation\, a video\, and a series of commissioned sculptures\, Erlanger continues her decade-long disruption of the “semiotics of suburbia.” In her practice\, Erlanger thinks of the home as a greater ecosystem containing not only houses but also their surrounding infrastructures and interior architectures.\nAt Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)\, massive illuminated planet sculptures map the suburban landscape\, positioning the development of home as an environmental force in itself. These new works explore “speculative memory”—how progress can only be understood through hindsight—and what this psychic limitation implies for the artist. Viewers will then move to new diorama sculptures that play on an institutional language of presentation\, positioning the enclosed scenes as already-past. Here\, Erlanger proposes both impossible architectures and terrestrial forms created using strategies of model-making. These works are each marked by changes in season\, emphasizing receding memories of a once-diverse climate.\nThe exhibition culminates in a sitcom set\, riffing on the psychology of interiors as well as acting as a platform to watch Erlanger’s new short film Appliance. The film dovetails recent research into the history and cultural significance of domestic technologies\, such as the shower or washing machine\, with a specific focus on how their operations have been considered interchangeably with human bodily functions. In our age of “polycrisis\,” wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously\, If Today Were Tomorrow provides a framework for thinking about the porousness of interior and exterior\, self and non-self\, body and home.\nOlivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz containing newly commissioned texts about the artist’s practice\, as well as contributions focusing on the interplay between architecture\, psychology\, and science fiction.\nSupport\nMajor support for Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.\nContemporary Arts Museum of Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

DESCRIPTION:Theaster Gates: The Gift and The Renege presents work by the acclaimed Chicago-based artist\, featuring large-scale paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that highlight the seen and unseen dynamics of Freedmen’s Town in Houston’s Fourth Ward. Throughout his career\, Theaster Gates has soulfully elevated our understanding of Black labor\, materials\, place\, and community to revitalize underrecognized neighborhoods by combining urban planning and a multifaceted art practice. His work powerfully highlights the true value Black spaces hold—although often devalued—as sites of American resilience\, liberation\, and redemption. Gates is a shape-shifter\, a world-builder\, and an artist who singularly connects the dots in both poetic and pragmatic ways. For over 20 years he has worked to transform the Southside of Chicago through various initiatives aimed at preserving and continuing the neighborhood’s vital role as a site for Black creativity. His multifaceted practice\, which demonstrates the dual importance of building community and exposing power structures\, has made him one of the most significant artists working in our time.

SUMMARY:Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls
DESCRIPTION:Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places\, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community that would last for more than 90 years.\nImages of the still-standing small houses of worship\, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall\, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins\, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls\,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective\, 4101 San Jacinto\, Suite 116.\nKathleen Coleman\, a fourth generation Third Ward resident\, curated the exhibition.\nThese small churches resembled rural structures like those in many sharecropping communities near Houston. A few of these small congregations linger and tell the story of the Third Ward’s ever-changing landscape. Because of its proximity to downtown Houston\, the churches are often sold and inhabited by a younger demographic.\nHudnall and Carrington\, who attended Texas Southern University\, have been cataloging the Third Ward area for more than 30 years\, telling a story with their photos of the community block by block\, from past to present. Hudnall’s mentor\, Dr. John Biggers\, saw the shotgun houses as urban pyramids. Carrington’s mentor\, veteran photographer and teacher Herbert Provost\, instilled a love of photography and of the community in him as a student at Jack Yates High School.\nCollins\, a mentee of Carrington and the exhibition coordinator at The Collective\, will continue documenting the area from a new generational perspective.\nThe exhibition\, which continues through May 18\, is part of the FotoFest Biennial and is free to attend. An opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 23\, at 2 p.m. and an artists’ talk Saturday\, April 27\, at 3 p.m.
