SUMMARY:Latino cARTographies Digital Board Exhibit of Houston Artists
DESCRIPTION:We are featuring an exhibit with the University of Houston that features Latin artists through an art digital board that also features our mural. Under the leadership of Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, Director of the University of Houston’s (UH) Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies (CMALS) launched the groundbreaking digital board\, Latino cARTographies: Mapping the Past\, Present\, and Future of Houston’s Latino Visual Art. The exhibit is on display from Friday\, April 26 to December 31\, 2024.\nThis portable\, bilingual\, and interactive digital board funded by the University of Houston is the result of a three-year collaboration led by Dr. Pamela Anne Quiroz\, with the curatorial leadership of former vice president of the National Mexican Museum of Art in Chicago\, Juana Guzman\, the CMALS Research Team\, and the International Gibson Group.\nTickets at the door are only $5 and include two other exhibits!\nClick HERE to read an article about the exhibit in Houston History Magazine.\nThe idea for Latino cARTographies began when Dr. Quiroz organized the city of Houston to host the country’s premier Latino art event\, Latino Art Now! Dr. Quiroz conceived the idea for the digital board and viewed it as a way to create a dynamic but permanent tribute to the Latino artists of Houston. She then persuaded the Gibson Group to collaborate with CMALS to achieve this goal. The result is a twenty-first-century mode to access the arts and experience culture – Latino cARTographies – that maps the past\, present\, and future of Houston’s Latino art. By utilizing technology that preserves\, represents\, and promotes Houston’s Latino visual arts and communities in an equitable and inclusive manner\, CMALS is transforming how we experience art in the twenty-first century.\nLatino cARTographies features our commissioned a mural to celebrate the many contributions of our city’s Mexican-American community. In the spirit of the great Mexican muralists\, this vibrant collective artwork\, Mexican-American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston\, highlights the places\, personalities\, concepts and events that shaped the Mexican-American community and laid the foundation for the multicultural city we live in today. Set in Connally Plaza against a dramatic backdrop of City Hall and the downtown skyline\, the mural is a cultural landmark in the historic heart of Houston. This mural spotlights 38 places\, personalities\, and events that played a key role in the growth of this community and provides recognition for the countless and essential contributions of Mexican Americans to the economy\, culture\, and vitality of our city in the 1900s. Mural artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes\, along with key fundraisers and government officials celebrated the unveiling to Houstonians in September 2018 for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Since then\, we have several outdoor activities being celebrated around the mural for National Hispanic Heritage Month and host field trips telling the stories behind the mural. The vibrant mural\, located at 1100 Bagby Street\, is now complemented by the interactive\, digital board that is inside our museum gallery.\nAbout the Exhibitor: Center for Mexican American and Latino Studies\, University of Houston\nThe Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts\, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge\, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. This involves designing a broad spectrum of public and scholarly programs. Located within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences\, CMALS has evolved into an academic unit with several major components: teaching\, research and publications\, recruitment and retention\, leadership training\, academic advising and community service.\nThank you to the following:\nMarisela Martinez\, Ed.D. SUMMARY:What Is A Ward?
DESCRIPTION:What defines a Ward\, or in a more modern sense of the word\, a neighborhood? Sabine Street Studios is located in Houston’s historic First Ward\, meaning the first developed in Houston. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

SUMMARY:Wells Fargo Presents Juneteenth: A Musical Journey Through Eras
DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth: A Musical Journey Through Eras” offers a poignant exploration of Black music’s evolution across two immersive evenings\, highlighting the soulful expressions of Classic R&B\, Blues\, Inspirational\, Hip Hop\, and more.\nOn June 14th\, the journey commences with a retrospective spanning 1960 to 1980. Audiences are enveloped in the spiritual resonance of Gospel\, resonating with the resilience and hope of a community seeking liberation. The evening progresses to the seductive allure of Classic R&B\, with its smooth melodies and heartfelt lyrics echoing the era’s social upheavals and quest for equality. Blues takes its rightful place\, infusing the atmosphere with raw emotion and introspection\, serving as both a reflection of struggle and a beacon of resilience during the Civil Rights Movement.\nAs the journey continues on June 15th\, the spotlight shifts to the dynamic years from 1980 to 2000. Here\, Hip Hop emerges as a powerful force for social change\, blending gritty narratives with infectious beats to chronicle the realities of urban life and systemic injustices. Alongside Hip Hop’s vibrant energy\, the evening embraces the lush harmonies and passionate rhythms of R&B\, showcasing its evolution and enduring impact on popular culture. Additionally\, other genres enrich the musical tapestry\, providing glimpses into the diverse expressions of Black artistry during this transformative period.\nThroughout both evenings\, “Juneteenth: A Musical Journey Through Eras” pays homage to the indomitable spirit of Black communities\, celebrating their triumphs\, resilience\, and cultural heritage. Each song serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of music as a vehicle for social change and collective healing. Join us on this unforgettable odyssey\, where every note reverberates with the timeless essence of freedom and the pursuit of justice.\nMiller Theatre Advisory Board and Wells Fargo present tonight’s performance of Juneteenth at Miller with additional support from Houston First and Walker Entertainment Group.\nAll performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre are FREE!

DESCRIPTION:Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux\nChoreography: George Balanchine\nMusic: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky\nElapse\nChoreography: Disha Zhang\nMusic: Zeng Xiaogang\nWorld Premiere\nDwight Rhoden\nThe Four Seasons\nChoreography: Stanton Welch AM\nMusic: Antonio Vivaldi\nOur season comes to a close with Four Seasons\, featuring four choreographers\, each with their own distinct style. After a critically-acclaimed debut in 2019\, Disha Zhang’s Elapse returns to the stage for an encore not to be missed. Exploring the idea of aging and the passage of time\, her first piece choreographed for an American company is set to a captivating original score by Zeng Xiaogang. George Balanchine’s Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux is described by New York City Ballet as “an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique.” Welch’s The Four Seasons dramatizes the stages of a woman’s life from the vigor of youth in spring to the introspection of old age in winter. Set to Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved score of the same name\, the large ensemble work returns for the first time since its premiere in 2007. Rounding out the program is a world premiere by Dwight Rhoden\, Founding Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Complexions Contemporary Ballet – his first for Houston Ballet. Rhoden has created works for notable companies such as New York City Ballet\, San Francisco Ballet and The Washington Ballet.\nProduction underwriters: Anne and Albert Chao

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.
