SUMMARY:Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls
DESCRIPTION:Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places\, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community that would last for more than 90 years.\nImages of the still-standing small houses of worship\, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall\, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins\, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls\,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective\, 4101 San Jacinto\, Suite 116.\nKathleen Coleman\, a fourth generation Third Ward resident\, curated the exhibition.\nThese small churches resembled rural structures like those in many sharecropping communities near Houston. A few of these small congregations linger and tell the story of the Third Ward’s ever-changing landscape. Because of its proximity to downtown Houston\, the churches are often sold and inhabited by a younger demographic.\nHudnall and Carrington\, who attended Texas Southern University\, have been cataloging the Third Ward area for more than 30 years\, telling a story with their photos of the community block by block\, from past to present. Hudnall’s mentor\, Dr. John Biggers\, saw the shotgun houses as urban pyramids. Carrington’s mentor\, veteran photographer and teacher Herbert Provost\, instilled a love of photography and of the community in him as a student at Jack Yates High School.\nCollins\, a mentee of Carrington and the exhibition coordinator at The Collective\, will continue documenting the area from a new generational perspective.\nThe exhibition\, which continues through May 18\, is part of the FotoFest Biennial and is free to attend. An opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 23\, at 2 p.m. and an artists’ talk Saturday\, April 27\, at 3 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Potentia // Actualitas is a collaborative\, immersive installation that explores the potential and actualized complexities of natural intelligence through lens-based media\, found objects and ready-mades in a site-specific installation. The lens-based works record iterations of light\, space and water surrounding a central structure created from organic matter\, rusted artifacts\, glass\, and construction materials. Running throughout is a neon line that connects these varying attributes into a systemic relationship. Together\, Cindee Travis Klement and JR Roykovich build a world that investigates the balance of opposing dichotomies and subsequent freedom from dualistic constraints. They advocate for a wild and intuitive response to a possible future of unbound potential.

DESCRIPTION:During your tour of three historic houses that tell Houston’s stories from plantation to emancipation\, the talented actor brings the hardships of slavery and the victory of freedom to life in dramatic reenactments. The historical script was written by Martha Whiting-Goddard\, Reverend Jack Yates’ great granddaughter\, who lived in the Yates House that was relocated to Sam Houston Park.\nExplore the following three houses that are designated by UNESCO as Sites of Memory for their “Routes of Enslaved Peoples’ Project” – 1847 Kellum-Noble House; 1866 Fourth Ward Cottage; and 1870 Yates House. “Sites of Memory\,” or “Sites of Conscience” are historic places that activate the power of memory to engage the public in a deeper understanding of the past\, inspiring action to shape a more just future. These sites break the silence surrounding slavery\, and place the tragedy into our universal memory. It is only through dialogue that we can have peace and reconciliation. We have a duty to remember the crimes committed against humanity by our ancestors\, especially as we see the return of prejudice and discrimination today.\nThe talented reenactor\, Khi Stephens\, brings the hardships of slavery and the victory of freedom to life through song\, a Library of Congress slave narrative\, and a portrayal written by a descendant of the Reverend Jack Yates. Stephens studied theater in Los Angeles and was coached by Martha Whiting-Goddard on her roles.\nFrom Plantation to Emancipation – The Freedom Experience begins on Saturday\, February 10 in celebration of Black History Month. These 90-minute tours are offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month; from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.\nGroups of 10 or more are encouraged to make a reservation at least two (2) weeks in advance. To make a reservation or to request more information\, call 713-655-1912 and ask for Nicole or email grouptours@heritagesociety.org.\nPlease arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your tour time for parking and walking through our campus to the museum gallery for check-in. The band’s goal is to introduce students to new music and offer music education students the opportunity to work with their peers. Even as he’s pursued by aggrieved parties on all sides\, Don Giovanni sets about seducing the lovely Zerlina—on her wedding day. But the arrogant Spanish antihero everyone loves to hate meets his comeuppance\, and in director Kasper Holten’s brilliant production\, his descent into hell is not literal but mental\, as depicted by Luke Halls’s incredible projections onto Es Devlin’s magically minimalist set. Conducted by acclaimed Mozartian Dame Jane Glover\, the opera’s stellar cast will be headlined by charismatic Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni\, an international superstar\, in the title role\, opposite sensational soprano Andriana Chuchman in her role debut as Donna Anna.
