SUMMARY:What Is A Ward?
DESCRIPTION:What defines a Ward\, or in a more modern sense of the word\, a neighborhood? Sabine Street Studios is located in Houston’s historic First Ward\, meaning the first developed in Houston. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

SUMMARY:Building a Mystery: The Impact of Cultural Humility on Spiritual Practice (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in the wisdom traditions of cultures other than our own.\nThe ancient\, living religious traditions of Tibet and indigenous America understand humanity as inextricably interconnected with its environment. Many psychologically- and spiritually-minded individuals find themselves incorporating the environmental wisdom of these traditions into their personal spiritual practices. Less well-understood than their inherent care for the environment are the cultural and societal contexts in which these traditions formed and grew\, and the largely-unspoken ways that these contexts – not often thought of as spiritual – fundamentally inform the practices of those spiritual traditions. If we take up these practices without considering their cultural and societal background\, we run the very real risk of misunderstanding the imaginal or mythical worldviews at the hearts of these traditions\, inadvertently and inappropriately adopting culture-bound behaviors that do not accurately reflect our own deep and complicated histories\, and allowing ourselves to remain blind to our own unconscious attachments to ideals that deepen the environmental crisis.\nHow can we honor the profundity and pragmatic usefulness of these spiritual worldviews without succumbing to the western world’s deeply-embedded tendencies to intellectual colonization and cultural appropriation? How can we remain curious and reflective about the ways we treat the earth\, and not use these powerful spiritual ecologies as a way of bypassing our responsibility to the lands we inhabit? Join us for this all-day conference as we explore the many ways that the realms of culture\, society\, and religion support each other\, and how we can respectfully and authentically adopt the valuable perspectives embedded in these wisdom traditions.

SUMMARY:Big\, Hot & Sticky
DESCRIPTION:Architecture Center Houston is proud to announce their upcoming exhibition Big\, Hot\, and Sticky\, opening Thursday\, June 27\, 5:30-7:30pm\, and on view through April 23\, 2024. Curated by Dalia Munenzon and Maggie Tsang\, the exhibition commissions seven architects and artist to respond to Houston’s built and natural environment.\nHouston is Big\, Hot\, and Sticky. The metropolitan region is roughly 640 square miles\, and from east of Galveston Bay to west of Katy\, it is comparable in width to the State of Connecticut. For nearly one third of the year\, the city’s temperature climbs to at least 90 °F; and 2\,500 miles of slow moving\, flat waterways crisscross the city creating a swamp-like environment.\nHouston’s emergence as a metropolis\, like many American cities\, has been shaped by its defiance of the environment. From climate control to flood control\, the city is a hyper-engineered\, constructed landscape designed to resist the natural world. As Houston grows\, however\, so too does this tension between the natural and the human-made: from the shock of hurricanes and tropical storms to the chronic stresses of urban heat and nuisance flooding. In the face of these environmental challenges\, engineered and technological solutions have a limited impact\, and historically\, have also been sources of inequality. Instead\, what is needed is a more radical social\, cultural\, and ecological imaginary that recasts the city’s relationship to nature.\nBig\, Hot\, and Sticky\, spotlights Houston as a novel urban ecosystem: a constellation of highways\, waterways\, air-conditioned buildings\, remnant prairies\, and possums. This exhibition invites seven designers to respond to Houston’s provocation through critical histories\, design research\, and speculative projects rooted in the city’s urban landscape: How are environments\, climates\, and cultures co-constructed? What is the future of this notoriously air-conditioned\, car-centered\, energy capital? What does it look like to thrive in a city that is Big\, Hot\, and Sticky?\nContributors:\nCadaster\nLola Ben-Alon and The Natural Materials Lab\nDept.\nDepartamento del Distrito\nDalia Munenzon\nJess Myers\nFei Zhou\nThis exhibition is generously supported by:\nDiluvial Houston Initiative\, an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-supported project; Rice School of Architecture\, Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design at the University of Houston\, and Rice University Office of Research. Architecture Center Houston is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. SUMMARY:Dramaturgy of the Body
DESCRIPTION:The Body Dramaturgy Workshop is a creative experience that integrates dance\, physical theater\, and theoretical studies. Designed by Andrea Vázquez Aguirre and Maria Giovanna Falcone\, this workshop focuses on exploring and expressing concepts of possession and devotion through movement and gestural composition.\nAimed at performing artists\, movement artists\, and the general public\, the workshop is open to 20 participants\, preferably with experience in physical theater\, dance\, or circus\, and a strong inclination towards collective creation. Over the course of four sessions\, participants will immerse themselves in a process of constructing symbolic and physical actions.\nDuring the workshop\, participants will work on their own interpretations of the concepts of possession and devotion\, also exploring sensuality and violence. These themes will be approached from a mystical and religious perspective\, creating a dramaturgy that uses the body as the main medium of expression.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:What Matters Most: How Can We Accept Morality? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:What might be possible if we understand death as the goal of life?\nWhy are we here? How can we live fulfilled\, meaningful lives? Why do we suffer? How do we build a truly connected\, inclusive community? The most important questions in our lives do not have simple answers. Often we have to live our way into those answers over a long time – they can’t be found in five easy steps in a YouTube video. And we need people and perspectives different from our own to support us in the process.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Initiating Dream Circles (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Deepen your understanding of what makes a dream group “Jungian\,” and how a shared language can enhance cohesion. Jungian-based dream circles hold a unique container for archetypal material to emerge from the unconscious through sound\, image\, and complexes. However\, the at-times unruly and suggestive power of this material requires a safe and practiced temenos – a sacred space of radical containment – to be demonstrated and modelled by the facilitator of the dream circle. When dreams are caught\, held\, and shared with other souls\, they can change attitudes\, perspectives\, and lived experience\, both individually and communally. The analytic process developed by C.G. Jung offers guidelines for facilitating this layered and mysterious psychic unfolding. In the upcoming fall semester\, Jungian analyst Jennifer Embry will facilitate the first part of a four-part zoom training and mentoring program for licensed therapists\, individuals in long-term Jungian study\, or those whose vocation brings them into the proximity of the unconscious and the archetypal field (yogis\, body-workers\, breath-workers\, artists\, and astrologers\, to name a few) who wish to facilitate their own dream circles through Jung’s words and concepts. Do you want to create a deep\, symbolic exploration that initiates insight and greater understanding of our common humanity and our spiritual essence\, all while forming honest\, open-hearted communities? If you are interested\, bring your curiosity and come join us for a taste of the nectar in this introductory lecture!

SUMMARY:Cian Dayrit: Liberties Were Taken
DESCRIPTION:The phrase “counter-cartographies” describes Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit interdisciplinary practice of transforming historic maps into portraits of contemporary social conditions. Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.
