The exhibition’s opening reception will be held June 22 from 6-8pm.\nThe “Through Time” exhibition will showcase how the artists’ individual perspectives and techniques have evolved over the years. This includes contemporary paintings\, sculptures\, photography\, installations\, and more. The diversity in medium and style reflects the myriad ways in which time has influenced and shaped artistic expression.\nJill Bedgood draws inspiration from her life experiences and places a strong emphasis on preserving objects through memorialization. By exploring the cyclical nature of life in her art\, she evokes nostalgic sentiments that prompt viewers to reflect on their memories and contemplate their mortality.\nCarter Ernst finds comfort in the immediacy of clay\, Ernst uses her sculpture creations to convey the beauty and urgency of nature while injecting a sense of humor necessary as a coping mechanism for navigating the complexities of the world.\nBill Haveron develops stories that draw from his imagination and contain subtle moral lessons. His art transports audiences to a fantastical realm where animals and plants possess human-like qualities and profound insights. Haveron’s pieces encourage viewers to engage with the alternate reality he has crafted\, offering both entertainment and opportunities for reflection.\nJeff Jennings’ work seamlessly integrates architectural elements and geometric shapes\, resulting in playful compositions that captivate the viewers’ eye. Through his use of color\, Jennings creates visually striking pieces that are dynamic and evoke intrigue.\nKelli Scott Kelley has been painting and collaging\, using vintage linens and other repurposed fabric supports\, which allows for a more ecological art making practice. Her pieces are inspired by the personal\, psychological and the sociopolitical. Kelley is moved by the exquisite beauty in the world\, as well as the absurdity and ugliness. Her art practice is a means to mine and express deep truths about the impending demise of the natural world.\nScott Madison is a sculptor who makes custom boxes\, furniture and lamps from various metals including aluminum\, brass\, bronze and stainless steel. He meticulously constructs his sculptures\, paying careful consideration to the texture\, shape\, and composition of each piece.\nSteve Murphy engages in the classical elements of sculpture\, form\, volume\, surface and edge. His body of work is the result of a continued reductive investigation of those sculptural elements.\nBecky Newsom creates sculpted painted canvases that result in intricate and delicate works of art that capture the essence of organic forms.\nAnn Stautberg photography largely stems from her home\, she photographs the sky and botanical silhouetted shapes as her garden is an ongoing source of inspiration. Each photograph is printed with archival inks onto stretched canvas\, she then tints the pieces with translucent photographic oils by hand.\nBob Russell is fascinated with the complex issues that make up one’s everyday life\, and the simple beauty one finds in nature when the time is taken to observe these things. Whether it’s a daunting cloud formation before a spring storm\, or an autumnal field of rust-colored grasses that line the highway blowing in the wind\, the intricate patterns on the backs of dragonfly larvae\, or errant marks made on freeway exits by truckers\, as the tires try to stay the course.\nFrank X. Tolbert 2 artistic career is marked by his ability to mix various mediums\, techniques\, and themes seamlessly. His works often delve into the intersection of nature\, culture\, and human experiences\, resulting in visually stunning and thought provoking pieces. Through his art\, Tolbert has consistently pushed boundaries\, challenging conventional norms and inviting viewers to engage in a deeper dialogue.\nThe opening reception on June 22 will offer attendees a first look at the exhibition\, an opportunity to meet the artists\, and engage in enlightening conversations about the works on display. Complimentary refreshments will be served during the event.\nThe “Through Time” exhibition will run from June 22 to August 18 at Andrew Durham Gallery. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday\, 11 am – 6 pm.

SUMMARY:Gabriel Lester: Odeon
DESCRIPTION:The Blaffer Art Museum is proud to present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of preeminent European artist Gabriel Lester\, who has gained an international standing for his art\, performance\, and film as well as his dynamic public art installations. Across his now decades-long career\, Lester has developed a captivating cinematic lens through which to see and imagine the world – consistently locating wonder in the seemingly stolid and mundane. For this exhibition Lester is most interested in the interplay between light and shadow\, as well as the seen and unseen\, as he responds to Houston and the fossil fuel industry that so deeply sheathes the region.\nIn the title installation StarStruck\, a dark\, viscous pool of oil is continually interrupted by droplets of water and corresponding flares of brilliant light – piercing a thick chamber of shadow with illuminating transmission. This waking effect is further articulated in the neighboring video sculpture Cosmic Call\, where the artist chases amorphous scenes of the universe through effervescent\, yet ultra low-resolution LED monitors to create a mesmerizing\, if highly elusive display. The capacity for light to simultaneously lead and lose us is expanded in the charmingly immersive installation How to Act as flickering colors surround us – pulsing to the soundtracks of various genres of film and television. The result is familiar and uncanny at once\, evoking the abstract languages of televisual entertainment while also making them strange and disorienting. Early modes of cinema flash before our eyes in the adjacent series Jump Cut\, where methodically rotating cubes house a variety of laser cut tableaux – coming into focus just long enough to dance away\, over and over again. Persistence of vision and retinal residue accumulates here\, propelling the art to work as much before your eyes\, as within and behind them. The final installation marries optical with environmental effect as rays of sun shine through the increasingly perforated ebony towers of Bambaataa\, projecting floating holo-graphic cubes that speak to the fleetingness of so-called structure. Taken and received as a whole\, this exhibition pierces heavy\, weighted geometries and their absolutes with the delightful\, if perplexing magic of discovery.

SUMMARY:Cian Dayrit: Liberties Were Taken
DESCRIPTION:The phrase “counter-cartographies” describes Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit interdisciplinary practice of transforming historic maps into portraits of contemporary social conditions. Employing counter- cartography as an approach\, Dayrit charts histories of imperialism\, industrialization\, and systems of subjugation that shape geographical boundaries and cultural narratives around the world. In Summer 2024\, Blaffer will present Dayrit’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States with embroidered tapestries\, paintings\, and sculpture. The exhibition will be accompanied by Countermapping Workshops in Houston to excavate histories of imperialism\, extraction\, and displacement among historically marginalized people\, while summoning new imaginaries that recognize the overlapping global struggles and resistance.

DESCRIPTION:For her latest solo exhibition\, Dance of Gestures\, Houston-based Colombian artist Loriana Espinel\, takes inspiration from the pre-Columbian pictographs of the Chiribiquete National Park in Colombia to develop a visual system based on the intersection of two different styles of calligraphy: the fluid lines of Japanese ink painting and angular gothic calligraphy.\nDance of Gestures combines both abstract and representational approaches and goals. Espinel writes of her work: “I aim to create a mural that is both abstract and representational. The lines will suggest natural forms while being expressive and dynamic on their own. I want viewers to appreciate both the shapes and lines and their interplay”.\nThe exhibition is part of the annual Sawyer Yards program at Sabine Street Studios’ East Corridor Gallery\, a space dedicated to hosting exhibitions dedicated to the line as an essential\, conceptual element in visual art.\nThe opening reception will be held on Thursday\, July 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the exhibitions is on view from July 18 to August 31. All exhibitions and activities are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Everyday life\, forks in the road\, and dead ends forcing us to alter course as time moves on are all natural parts of the human experience. Sometimes we aren’t even aware of certain changes until we reflect on our present and the events of the past. We are changed in the process and often wonder how we got to certain places in our lives. In this exhibition titled Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes inspired by the David Bowie song\, artists of Sabine Street Studios present works incorporating the ideas of time\, change\, and reflection\, connecting the past and the present\, all steering us towards an unknown future.\nThe exhibition is on view in the South Gallery and corridor of Sabine Street Studios. DESCRIPTION:Sawyer Yards presents Earl Staley: The Machine\, a diverse showcase of the longtime Houston artist’s works on canvas at Sabine Street Studios’ North Gallery.\nThe artworks chosen for this exhibition are large\, densely colorful paintings on canvas that highlight Staley’s variety of approaches to image-making\, mark-making\, and his range of techniques. Even at this stage in his long career\, Staley continues to experiment\, attempting new and different ways of building and finishing a work. The paintings all exist somewhere on a wide spectrum of abstraction and pictorial quality\, as well as physicality. Though landscapes are evident in his work\, no subject is off the table for the artist. For Staley\, the most important considerations are that his pictures be “visually delightful\, intellectually stimulating\, and tell an interesting story.” He further writes:\n“I found my voice when I stopped thinking about making art and stared telling my life story.\nand “All art must contain love of life and an awareness of death.”\nThe exhibition is on view through August 31\, and is free and open to the public. Join the artist for a reception on Thursday\, July 18\, from 6-8pm.\nArtist Biography:\nEarl Staley grew up in the suburbs of Chicago\, Illinois and resides in Houston\, Texas. He is an artist and teacher with more than 60 years of experience. Mr. Staley holds Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. He taught at Washington University in St. Louis\, Rice University in Houston\, and the University of St. Thomas in Houston\, where he was chairperson of the Art Department. Today he teaches in the Fine Art program at Lonestar College in Tomball\, TX. Mr. Staley is the recipient of three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1981 he received the Rome Prize in Painting from the American Academy in Rome\, Italy and he resided in Rome for 4 years. Mr. Staley’s paintings look back to his artistic roots and forward to new interpretations of the myths and symbols embedded in his life.
