SUMMARY:Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence
DESCRIPTION:Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence showcases Kehinde Wiley’s new\, monumental body of work\, with large-scale paintings and sculptures of men and women in repose. Through his work\, with detailed portrayals of Black and Brown individuals\, the artist confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence and injustice.\nIn this body of work\, Wiley uses the visual language of heroes\, martyrs\, and saints as portrayed in Western European historical art. His work expands on his “Down” series from 2008\, which was inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger’s 16th-century painting The Dead Christ in the Tomb. For Wiley\, Holbein’s painting triggered an ongoing investigation into the iconography of repose and sacrifice in Western art.\nWiley\, one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists\, created this body of work against the background of the pandemic and the global rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. The works in An Archaeology of Silence stand as elegies and monuments\, underscoring the terms in which Black people are seen and heard.\nIn his words: “That is the archaeology I am unearthing: The specter of police violence and state control over the bodies of young Black and Brown people all over the world.”\nThe exhibition premiered earlier this year at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco\, and the MFAH is the first stop on the tour.

SUMMARY:Taking Steps
DESCRIPTION:By Alan Ayckbourn\nA tongue-tied solicitor has bitten off more than he can chew overseeing the sale of a crumbling\, possibly haunted house that\, um\, used to be a brothel. Then in the course of one hectic night and morning\, two couples\, the solicitor and realtor\, each immersed in their own personal problems\, end up in more of a mess than ever. And it all happens in a highly ingenious and original theatrical setting in which all the rooms\, passages and stairs of this three-story house are on a single level. Did we mention there’s a ghost?! Let’s just say that in this British farce by the brilliant Alan Ayckbourn\, hilarity definitely ensues!

SUMMARY:Quilting Together Your Scraps and Pieces of Writing
DESCRIPTION:INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Cole and Jamie Portwood\nTIME: Sunday\, May 19\, 3:00–6:00 p.m. CST\nPRICE: Early bird price: $45 for members\, $60 for nonmembers. The deadline for early bird pricing is Monday\, May 13. After Monday\, May 13: $55 for members\, $70 for nonmembers. Become a member here. Apply for a scholarship here.\nLOCATION: Hybrid. Writespace\, 1907 Sabine Street\, #125\, Houston\, TX 77007 (map). This workshop is also available via Zoom.\nLEVEL: All levels\nCAP: 15\nAnyone else have scraps of writing just sitting in the Google drive or an overstuffed notebook? Short pieces consisting of a single\, sharply drawn memory or some lovely lines from a poem that was never finished. Do you have paragraphs from memoir pieces or stories that you just couldn’t delete because they are so true and truly beautiful?\nWhat do you do with them all? They seem so random and disjointed?\nThese pieces do all have something in common; you wrote them and you like them\, so we are going to have an old fashioned quilting bee. Through collective wisdom\, mentor texts\, generative exercises\, and group sharing\, we will seek out the colors\, themes\, patterns\, and images and patch together these seemingly disparate scraps into a quilt of surpassing beauty. Will it be a poem? An essay? A hybrid piece that defies genre but hits the heart just right? Who knows?\nLet’s find out together. Bring printed copies of your favorite scraps\, blank 8X10 paper\, tape\, and a pair of scissors.\nThis workshop can be taken in person at the studio or online via Zoom.\nThis event is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. This project is generously funded by the Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs\, and Mid-America Arts Alliance.\nThis project is generously funded by Mid-America Arts Alliance\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the state arts agencies of Arkansas\, Kansas\, Missouri\, Nebraska\, Oklahoma\, and Texas.

SUMMARY:The Crime Is Mine (Mon crime)
DESCRIPTION:After a struggling actress stands trial for the murder of a lascivious producer in 1930s Paris\, she ascends to scandalous stardom. A new life of fame\, wealth\, and tabloid celebrity awaits—until the truth comes out. Isabelle Huppert appears as a fading silent-film star in François Ozon’s frothy story of murder\, romance\, blackmail\, girl power\, and a bit of French film history. As Paste observes\, “the costumes by frequent Ozon collaborator Pascaline Chavanne are all divine\, with not a wig out of place. The Crime Is Mine has layers of textbook farce decorated with a confectioner’s critique.”\nPart of our FIVE FUNNY FRENCH FILMS series at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:What Is A Ward?
DESCRIPTION:What defines a Ward\, or in a more modern sense of the word\, a neighborhood? Sabine Street Studios is located in Houston’s historic First Ward\, meaning the first developed in Houston. As artists and creatives we all come from different backgrounds and heritages\, as does our practice. But this practice has a shared sense of personal belonging\, of representing us and ourselves. Can a neighborhood have an identity when it is made up of diverse peoples and backgrounds? Or is it just a geographic definition\, delineated by streets and bayous?\nFor this tenant exhibition\, artists were asked: “How does your Ward fit within your studio practice? Is the idea of “home” something which inspires you creatively\, or a place of rest and comfort?” The exhibition is on view in the South Gallery through July 14.

SUMMARY:'Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette'
DESCRIPTION:Asia Society Texas is pleased to present Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette\, the organization’s first public art installation. This collaboration between Cuban American artist Rafael Domenech and Vietnamese American artist Tomas Vu assumes the form of a dynamic outdoor pavilion with two stages\, occupying AST’s 13\,000-square-foot lot at the intersection of Oakdale and Caroline Streets in the heart of Houston’s Museum District. Rafael Domenech and Tomas Vu Heat Silhouette is commissioned in partnership with the University of Houston’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts.\nDescribed by the artists as a form of “urban acupuncture\,” Heat Silhouette is a physical structure designed to welcome the spontaneous circulation of people\, energy\, and events. The outdoor pavilion takes cues from college campuses\, popular culture\, and experimental magazines. Made of wood\, aluminum framing\, and laser-cut construction mesh — the very materials used to build the city of Houston — the pavilion becomes an extension of the museum and a public programming space. The title itself references the most omnipresent weather condition of Houston the summer’s intense heat\, a heat so palpable that it feels as if it occupies actual space\, creating a silhouette or edge.\nFor the artists\, the pavilion resists merely being a form of architecture. Instead\, the pavilion physically operates as an experimental magazine\, referencing the graphic processes seen in radical publications from the 1960s and 1970s like Kontexts\, an important catalyst of avant-garde poetry. Readers do not flip Heat Silhouette’s pages; instead\, they become viewers that are invited to walk in\, around\, and through the publication. Laser-cut texts appropriated from popular science-fiction films\, poetry\, and other sources intermingle to form multiple layers and viewpoints that shift with the sunlight. Heat Silhouette is a space of active production filled with theater-like compartments — a site where text\, image\, and pattern coalesce into a kind of urban camouflage.

SUMMARY:IVO MORRISON | THE INTRODUCTION
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Opening Reception on May 16\, 6-9pm\nExhibition on through May 17-21\nBlue is the colour of dreams. Orange\, red and white are the colours of summertime. In ‘The Introduction’\, Ivo Morrison tells you a story about the memory of summer. But it’s not about his summers. It’s about yours. And how you remember them. And how the memory of them keeps you warm when it’s cold and dark.\nIvo Morrison\, born 1990\, is a self-taught British artist currently based in London. His work is hand drawn with shellac ink on paper. His primary ambition is to tell stories in his pictures; his work is exciting\, silly\, and a bit mysterious.\nHe has exhibited at multiple British galleries\, including with Rebecca Hossack and the British Art Portfolio\, as well as internationally\, most notably at Art Basel Miami Beach\, Art on Paper in New York\, Ink Asia in Hong Kong\, and the International Art Festival of São Paolo\, among others.
