SUMMARY:Reefer Madness
DESCRIPTION:There is a new menace sweeping the nation\, ready to ensnare and seduce the youth and drag them down into a life of sin: REEFER MADNESS!\nIn this hilarious\, over-the-top satire\, the high school drama club\, led by the gravely stern Lecturer\, illustrates the perils of the “leafy green assassin.” They tell the story of Jimmy\, a fine\, upstanding\, All-American boy whose life fell apart because of the evil reefer. Jimmy was a good kid\, with a bright future ahead of him. He had a sweetheart whom he loved\, the wholesome and sweet Mary Lane. But when Jimmy is tricked into taking his first puff of reefer\, his life quickly spirals downward. He begins to neglect his family\, his schoolwork\, even Mary\, in order to spend all his time smoking at the Reefer Den. His addiction leads him to debauchery\, sin\, and theft.\nReefer Madness is an irreverent parody of the classic 1930s instructional film full of camp\, hilarity\, mayhem\, and madness.

SUMMARY:It Is Magic
DESCRIPTION:Deb and Sandy are auditioning Tim for the role of the Wolf in a production of The Three Little Pigs\, but there’s a mysterious haze in the basement of the Mortier Civic Playhouse and that\, in addition to interruptions from the director of ‘the Scottish play’ that’s having its opening night upstairs\, is making things difficult. Then\, the mysterious Liz shows up throwing the room into utter chaos\, revealing the deep\, ancient evil at the heart of the community theater audition process.\nIt Is Magic is the latest play by Mickle Maher\, writer of such Catastrophic favorites as There Is a Happiness That Morning Is\, The Hunchback Variations\, Song About Himself\, the world premiere of Small Ball\, co-produced by former Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey\, and others.\nDirected by core artist Jeff Miller\, whose past directing credits include Catastrophic hits Buried Child\, Curse of the Starving Class\, Baby Screams Miracle\, and The Book of Grace.

SUMMARY:Carmina burana
DESCRIPTION:This is what ‘epic’ sounds like. A massive orchestra and huge chorus join forces in Jones Hall for Orff’s infamous ode to love\, drink\, and living life to the fullest\, Carmina burana. Instantly recognizable thanks to its use in countless movies and commercials\, a live Carmina is one of classical music’s most spellbinding and immersive experiences. Conductor Laureate Andrés Orozco-Estrada returns to lead these performances\, which also include an exciting world premiere by Jimmy López Bellido.

SUMMARY:Beetlejuice
DESCRIPTION:He earned his stripes on Broadway… now the ghost-with-the-most is coming to Austin.\nIt’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film\, this hilarious musical tells the story of Lydia Deetz\, a strange and unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes. With an irreverent book\, an astonishing set\, and a score that’s out of this Netherworld\, BEETLEJUICE is “SCREAMINGLY GOOD FUN!” (Variety). And under its uproarious surface (six feet under\, to be exact)\, it’s a remarkably touching show about family\, love\, and making the most of every Day-O!\nBeetlejuice contains strong language\, mature references\, and a lot of the crazy\, inappropriate stuff you would expect from a deranged demon. Recommended for ages 13 and up.\nPresented by the Memorial Hermann Broadway at the Hobby Center

SUMMARY:Stagolee and the Funeral of a Dangerous Word
DESCRIPTION:World Premiere\nBy Thomas Meloncon\nThe play takes place in an office in a small town in East Texas where the local NAACP chapter is planning a funeral for the “N word”. At the same time\, a bigoted white man is on his way to that same office to have a frank discussion with the legendary Stagolee\, a black man known for his swagger. The two men have had a fight at their workplace\, and this “conversation” is actually a court-ordered intervention\, facilitated by a visiting Jewish psychologist. This new play examines different points of view along the racial divide and does so without judgement\, ultimately bringing its characters into a better understanding of each other. A world premiere production of nationally recognized Houston playwright Thomas Meloncon’s newest work.\nThomas Meloncon is an Associate Professor of Theatre in the Visual and Performing Art Dept. in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences at Texas Southern University. He is the author of plays that have been produced nationally and internationally. His poetry publications include Recollections and Poetry in E Minor. His list of plays includes\, Johnnie B. Goode published in Acting Up and Getting Down: An Anthology of African American Playwrights of Texas\, published by University of Texas Press\, The Man Who Saved New Orleans published in Callaloo: A Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters by John Hopkins University Press. His popular stage plays include The Diary of Black Men\, Whatever Happened to Black Love\, If Beds Could talk\, Jump the Broom\, and Where Were You in ’65\, to name a few. Mr. Meloncon is the Narrator on the recent Fade to Black “Thank You\, Ten” documentary film\, celebrating their 10 years of mentoring and producing new African American playwrights from across the U.S. He is the featured poet on several Jazz musical albums\, and his folksong\, “Ain’t Gonna Wait Too Long” can be heard in season 3 episode 6 of the TV series SNOWFALL. His many awards include The TSU IMPACT Award\, TSU COLABS Best Faculty Mentor Award-Theatre\, Induction into the Kashmere High School Alumni Hall of Fame\, two certificates of Congressional Recognition\, A Resolution from The State of Texas\, A Bronze Medallion from the City of Houston\, the Creative Writing Award from the Houston Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalist\, Community Service Award from the Houston Area Women’s Center\, and the Excellence in Community Health Education Award from The Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine.

SUMMARY:The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
DESCRIPTION:The Classical Theatre Company will wrap up its Season of Iconic Women with William Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece\, The Taming of the Shrew. Having not produced a Shakespeare piece since Henry V in 2015\, nor a Shakespeare comedy since The Merchant of Venice in 2013\, CTC is primed and ready to dive into The Bard once again.\nThe Taming of the Shrew follows the story of Katherine who is being sold off as a wife by her father to the highest bidder. Her boldness and stubborn streak have made her unmarriable by society\, but her sister\, Bianca\, cannot marry until the elder sister has been so. Enter Petruchio\, a cad who is determined to win over Katherine to be his wife. An explosive battle of the sexes ensues in this electrically charged love story that will have audiences crying with laughter.\n“This play is my favorite Shakespeare comedy\,” says CTC Executive Artistic Director John Johnston. “But it’s got some problematic aspects that don’t really play at face value for a modern audience. The idea of a woman being ‘tamed’ by a man to be married is creepy at best. So\, to address this issue\, our production is going to set the play as a mid-20th-century sitcom. Think Father Knows Best\, The Donna Reed Show\, or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Using the script to explore the values that we once held in our popular culture\, and do still to this day\, in some respects. Our goal is to examine and critique the treatment of women rather than glorify it\, and this lens of pre-feminist situational comedies will help us to do that.”

SUMMARY:Don Giovanni
DESCRIPTION:There will be hell to pay640 girls in Italy\, 231 in Germany\, 100 in France\, 91 in Turkey\, 1\,003 in Spain. As the servant Leporello famously sings in his “Catalogue aria\,” the eponymous fiend in Mozart’s sublime tragicomedy Don Giovanni has already been very busy when he beds the engaged Anna and then kills her father in a duel. Even as he’s pursued by aggrieved parties on all sides\, Don Giovanni sets about seducing the lovely Zerlina—on her wedding day. But the arrogant Spanish antihero everyone loves to hate meets his comeuppance\, and in director Kasper Holten’s brilliant production\, his descent into hell is not literal but mental\, as depicted by Luke Halls’s incredible projections onto Es Devlin’s magically minimalist set. Conducted by acclaimed Mozartian Dame Jane Glover\, the opera’s stellar cast will be headlined by charismatic Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni\, an international superstar\, in the title role\, opposite sensational soprano Andriana Chuchman in her role debut as Donna Anna. The opera’s world-renowned cast will be headlined by bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as Leporello\, tenor Kang Wang in his company debut as Don Ottavio\, and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke as Donna Elvira.

SUMMARY:Beyond Broadway Series: Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age
DESCRIPTION:In Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age\, he covers all the bases: sex\, death and bacchanalia\, with a set list as eclectic as the man himself. Songs from Cabaret authors Kander and Ebb blend with contemporary favourites and even a self-penned paean against plastic surgery. ‘I am literally the only person on American TV who has not had botox!’ he quips. He also discusses the effects of gravity\, the time the mum from the Brady Bunch punched him\, and what his dog taught him about the quality of life.

SUMMARY:Movies Houstonians Love: Caravaggio
DESCRIPTION:Introduced by Houston artist David McGee\nA profound reflection on art\, sexuality\, and identity\, Caravaggio recounts the life of the celebrated 17th-century painter through his brilliant\, nearly blasphemous paintings and flirtations with the underworld. The film incorporates Caravaggio’s precise aesthetic into the visuals\, while touching on all of director Derek Jarman’s major concerns: history\, homosexuality\, violence\, and the relationship between painting and film. Nigel Terry (Excalibur) stars with Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Tilda Swinton (Orlando).\nDavid McGee received a BFA from Prairie View A&M University. He has had solo exhibitions at numerous regional institutions\, and his work belongs to collections including the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston; W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University; and the Menil Collection. He is represented by Inman Gallery.

The lens-based works record iterations of light\, space and water surrounding a central structure created from organic matter\, rusted artifacts\, glass\, and construction materials. Running throughout is a neon line that connects these varying attributes into a systemic relationship. Together\, Cindee Travis Klement and JR Roykovich build a world that investigates the balance of opposing dichotomies and subsequent freedom from dualistic constraints. They advocate for a wild and intuitive response to a possible future of unbound potential.

SUMMARY:Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls
DESCRIPTION:Early African American settlers in Houston’s Third Ward area established small worship places\, reminiscent of the praise houses attended during slavery in the Jim Crow era. The intimate and personal size of the congregations created bonds in the community that would last for more than 90 years.\nImages of the still-standing small houses of worship\, captured by art photographers Earlie Hudnall\, Ray Carrington and Tamirah Collins\, will be shared at the exhibition “Third Ward Unity in Faith: Backbone of Our Souls\,” opening March 23 at the Community Artists’ Collective\, 4101 San Jacinto\, Suite 116.\nKathleen Coleman\, a fourth generation Third Ward resident\, curated the exhibition.\nThese small churches resembled rural structures like those in many sharecropping communities near Houston. A few of these small congregations linger and tell the story of the Third Ward’s ever-changing landscape. Because of its proximity to downtown Houston\, the churches are often sold and inhabited by a younger demographic.\nHudnall and Carrington\, who attended Texas Southern University\, have been cataloging the Third Ward area for more than 30 years\, telling a story with their photos of the community block by block\, from past to present. Hudnall’s mentor\, Dr. John Biggers\, saw the shotgun houses as urban pyramids. Carrington’s mentor\, veteran photographer and teacher Herbert Provost\, instilled a love of photography and of the community in him as a student at Jack Yates High School.\nCollins\, a mentee of Carrington and the exhibition coordinator at The Collective\, will continue documenting the area from a new generational perspective.\nThe exhibition\, which continues through May 18\, is part of the FotoFest Biennial and is free to attend. An opening reception will be held Saturday\, March 23\, at 2 p.m. and an artists’ talk Saturday\, April 27\, at 3 p.m.

SUMMARY:Critical Geography – FotoFest Biennial 2024
DESCRIPTION:The FotoFest Biennial 2024 central exhibition\, “Critical Geography”\, reexamines traditional Western and historical understandings of geography while expanding these investigations to new realms. Borrowing its name from the subdiscipline of geography that questions and challenges power structures\, inequality\, and the dominant ideologies shaping physical space\, Critical Geography explores how space\, place\, and communities are influenced by social\, economic\, ecological\, and political forces. By critically analyzing these dynamics\, the works in the exhibition provoke conversations around social justice\, environmental sustainability\, and transformative change.\n“Our intent is that the 2024 Biennial\, featuring both existing and newly commissioned works from local and international artists\, will allow viewers to engage in important dialogues around the social dimensions of space and our shared planet\,” says Steven Evans\, Executive Director of FotoFest. “We look forward to once again celebrating Houston’s vibrant art and photo community while embracing these new perspectives around place-making\, the image\, and geography.”\n“Critical Geography” features a diverse range of image-based practices\, representing artists from photographers and storytellers whose works shed light on systemic oppression\, violence\, and urgent environmental concerns to image-makers who appropriate mapping\, social media\, and technology in order to explore inequality in colonial and post-colonial contexts. The exhibition highlights a range of unorthodox strategies employed to construct new narratives around place and community while imagining alternative organizations of social space. The Biennial exhibition includes several site-specific works and new commissions by FotoFest.

SUMMARY:(of) Everything Island
DESCRIPTION:Katrina Moorhead’s (of) Everything Island is an assembly of evocative sculptural objects interacting with one another in the main gallery. Building off Moorhead’s sensitivity to materials’ potential for expansive storytelling\, these objects explore places where the veil between the real and the otherworldly is thin and porous. The works reimagine aspects of the natural world\, referencing unearthly entities and apparitions\, flora and fauna\, culled from a disparate array of sources including Victorian evolutionary theory\, video games\, and traditional Irish fairy folklore to create a feminist exploration of grief\, empathy\, and resilience.

SUMMARY:MANUAL (Ed Hill & Suzanne Bloom) | BEECH // BOOK ; An Emblematic Pairing
DESCRIPTION:MANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom)\nBEECH // BOOK ; An Emblematic Pairing\nMarch 9 – April 20\, 2024\nReception for the Artists: Saturday\, March 9\, 3-5 pm\,\nArtist Conversation with Juliette Bianco 4 pm\, Director\, Weatherspoon Art Museum\, Greensboro\, NC\nMoody Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new photographs by MANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom)\, in conjunction with the 2024 FotoFest Biennial. BEECH // BOOK\, An Emblematic Pairing draws on work from their Guggenheim Fellowship\, awarded in 2021. This exhibition marks fifty years of the artists’ collaboration and their nineteenth exhibition with the Gallery. Quoting the artists\, “The crux of the project is the shared etymological roots of the words beech and book. The implications of this dynamic connection have sparked intellectual\, imaginary\, and artistic discovery\, and extends to questions of humans’ relation with our planet. The realities of climate change prompted us to reconsider\, reexamine\, and reinterpret humans and trees as collaborative beings\, with the book\, in many ways\, acting as an informing intermediary.”\nMANUAL (Ed Hill / Suzanne Bloom) began their artistic collaboration in 1974. Considered pioneers of digital photography\, their photographs\, videos\, multimedia projects and installations have been shown widely\, both internationally and throughout the United States. Their work is represented in many permanent private and public collections including major museums in Houston\, where they are notably well established\, New York City\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Chicago\, Denver\, Arizona\, and New Hampshire. A retrospective of their work\, MANUAL: Two Worlds\, The Collaboration of Ed Hill and Suzanne Bloom\, organized by the International Center of Photography and shown there in 2002\, was exhibited in an expanded form at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston in 2004. Their first exhibition at the MFAH\, Suzanne Bloom and Ed Hill (MANUAL): Research and Collaboration\, took place in 1980. FORESTPRODUCTS\, an extensive experimental multimedia installation\, was mounted at the Contemporary Arts Museum\, Houston in 1992. SUMMARY:Xu Bing: Word Alchemy
DESCRIPTION:‘Xu Bing: Word Alchemy’ assembles more than 50 of Xu Bing’s most important woodcut prints\, videos\, drawings\, installations\, and other ephemera representing almost 50 years of the artist’s creative output. Starting with Xu’s early engagements with social realism and Western art historical traditions alike\, the exhibition charts the evolution of the artist’s linguistic experiments which challenge and expand not only the history of Chinese landscape painting\, but the canons of contemporary art.\nBorn in China and now working in both Brooklyn and Beijing\, artist Xu Bing (b. 1955) is widely considered to be one of the most important artists to emerge from China in the 20th century. Focusing on the artist’s longstanding engagement with words and language\, ‘Word Alchemy’ is the most comprehensive exhibition on this theme so far\, and around one-third of the objects in the exhibition are being shown in the U.S. for the first time.\nHighlights of the exhibition include Xu Bing’s early works\, his private never-before-seen notebook\, landmark prints including the Series of Repetitions handscroll\, a new Background Story with a connection to Zhao Mengfu’s famous ‘Autumn Colors on the Qiao and Hua Mountains’ handscroll\, a new Texas-themed ‘Square Word Calligraphy\,’ and a new installation of ‘Monkeys Grasp for the Moon’ in Asia Society Texas’ Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.\nOn the occasion of the exhibition\, Asia Society Texas will publish a full-color exhibition catalogue and host a symposium on Xu Bing’s art on February 23\, 2024.
